FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

What a cool looking place. Nice sunshine too! How great to get out there on a horse. Too cold here, but it did get up to low 40's today.

Thanks for posting the pics!

Hi ladies.

Becky, it's good to hear from you. We've all been thinking about you here.

Well, all the horses are moved up to The New Place. I'm still keeping tabs on The Old Place at night because I live right around the corner and we still have some stuff there. One of the things that I have to do is put the chickens in for the night, because they won't be going up till this weekend. They go in for the night by themselves once it gets dark out, but I tried to cheat and get them in when it was just turning to dusk. They weren't going to have any of that, so I did some errands and came back when it was dark and sure enough, the little buggers were all bundled up in their hen house. Not a one was outside.

It's sad going to The Old Place when there are no horses there. It still smells like horse, and you expect them to all be in the barn, but when you go through... nothing. Part of me expects this to be like one giant field trip. Stupid, I know.

That’s the best time to move chickens too..at night, after they’ve settled into their coop. I don’t know how many you have, but you could put several in a large dog crate and move them like that.

They’re nearly blind in the dark, from what I understand, and become very docile. Keep the lights dim and you should be able to move them without any trouble.

Got your freepmail about the pennywhistle...I’m not very good at it, but I do really enjoy it! I have a bunch of cheap Feadogs and one very nice pvc one with a Corian fipple from Mac Hoover. They usually run around fifty dollars, I think...but Mr. Hoover gave this one to me. I love it dearly.

Becky, whatever you decide to do, know that we’ll continue praying for you to have peace of mind. I can’t imagine that the folks who run the city would have a problem with someone putting a nice tree in their park; especially if the city doesn’t have to pay for it! And having it where you can see it all the time will be a special thing for you, too.

Good morning!...

I’m going to call you this morning as soon as ecurbh leaves and I can sit and chat.

Weather is nasty up here... rainy and snowy and windy... I’m sure looking forward to spring!

Hello all - Pinging my big ole Becky list to give an update.

Had a nice long talk with Becky... She’s OK... there’s hard times when it’s quiet I think, but she’s holding up.

We talked about her plans to get an apartment built in town and get her house ready to market, she’s got some good leads on selling the horses, the original people who wanted to buy Harley are still interested, and she’s got some other people who might be interested in Rocky. I wish I could take him... he’s a good horse!

We talked a little about our gift idea, and we’ve decided a tree might be complicated with the city and maybe there will be something much more practical she’ll need to get for this new apartment. On a practical level she’ll need a new couch and bed and decor for the place, and on a decorative level, she’ll be wanting some flower boxes and outdoor furniture for her little porch stoop. So we decided to just let it sit, for now, if that’s OK. 2J will hold the money until such time as Becky either says “this is what I’d like” or we give her the money to buy something she’s picked out.

We loved the tree idea, but it just didn’t fit.

We also talked about her getting all this stuff done so she can get one of them gaited horses. That idea still excites her but she’s got a lot to do.

She says she doesn’t know what to say on here, she is having a hard time getting back into small talk, but she sure appreciates everyone who is continuing to send her well wishes. I told her to go take some pictures of that muddy horse of hers, I guess Charlie’s going to come by and clean him up and ride him so he’s ready for those people to come and look at. Hopefully he hasn’t forgotten how to be a riding horse with all this time off.

So there’s the update of what’s going on :~)

See Becky, there’s lots to talk about. :~)

That's just fine, I'm sure everybody wants something that's sensible. Hopefully something lasting that won't wear out too quick (although it's always a tossup with trees anyhow!)

Is Harley broke English?

He moves nice enough to be English. Becky almost sold him once to a girl that wanted to jump.

Mmmm. Maybe a nice small tree in a pot, for her porch, in addition to whatever else she’d like. ;o)

The idea of the planter boxes and a nice place to sit outside at her new place appeals to me, and is still in line with the garden tree theme :~)

But I said - you just think of something that you’d like :~) And she will.

I thought about that:),, and would maybe like to look into what type could live in a pot long term.

His twin brother is at our barn now.

He was GIVEN to our trainer by a fox hunter who couldn't control him in the field. The first thing she did was take that big old ugly gag bit out of his mouth and put him in a French snaffle. I've been riding him when I'm not riding my Grace . . . he IS strong but very tractable and wants to do the right thing. Not the brightest bulb on the porch, but a very nice boy . . .

It would be nice to have two good looking identical twin boys to drive tandem to the meet, then have your groom take the wheeler home . . . ;-)

I’m more than happy to hold on to the contributions until I’m told what to do with it. By the end of the week I expect all the checks that are going to be sent will have arrived and I will be able to draw up an accountability statement.

Thanks for the update. Whatever suits best is fine with me - And I’m fine with the money sitting until Becky decides and/or needs it.

I also sure wish I could get Rocky. I’ve been going through everyone I know trying to think of someone who raises quarter horses or is using quarter horses in their breeding program.

As an aside, Bob was talking about gelding Tuffy this morning. He decided not to breed him this year at all, just campaign him, and then making a decision next year. He said that would give him three good geldings, Prez, Indy and Tuffy, and he wants to sell everyone else.

Can you believe this weather? I had the boys outside planting radishes at 9:00am. The temp at the time was 64 degrees. Forty-five minutes later it was so cold we couldn’t stand it. And the wind is blowing so hard!

Then I looked out the front yard and my neighbor (who collects cans and stores them in little plastic grocery store bags in heaps on her front porch) was out running around chasing down cans. There were literally hundreds of cans ALL OVER every one of our neighbor’s yards.

Sadly, while I was out chasing cans, I could hear the crash of tree limbs coming down. Many many trees (as I’m sure is the case your place too) have broken limbs that are caught and dangling and this wind is bringing them down.

We had several hanging and actually supported by our power line to our house, but thankfully Steve got them cut and removed last weekend.

The nursery folks could tell you which trees could stay pot-bound. There are dwarf varieties of lots of trees that might work!

Aw, Harley'll do fine. I didn't ride Bob for 6 month when his feet got so bad and when I rode him the first time after that he was actually better than he'd been before. I guess horses like a vacation every now and then too.

When you get your appartment all built and get settled in and if you're still so inclined, you might look at Japanese Maples to put in a pot on your new patio. I hear they do well in containers since they stay pretty small too. Or I saw an article in Southern Living once that said that azaleas do well as a container specimen, especially when they're limbed up to look more like a small tree.

Hopefully Becky’s broken limbs come down safely then. I saw your temperature drop on WUnderground... batter down your hatches!

I bet he’ll do fine too. :~) Whenever they can get around to it. With this drastic temperature drop and wind, it may not be today!
