You live near the Pacific ocean, don’t you?

Sort of. It's a number of hours' drive to get to the Pacific (NOT a day outing), which is why we last went in the mid 90s. Puget Sound, is closer, 20+ minutes to Seattle if there's no traffic (ha!) -- but beaches tend to be an hour or more away. We have a number of smaller lakes nearby and until LoM had back problems (making it difficult to load/unload them from the car) we'd kayak there.

But I've never really completely liked the Pacific, having largely grown up around the Great Lakes. The Pacific *stinks* -- my first exposure, in 1964 with my California cousins, had me holding my nose miles inland before we got to the beaches. Even the fishy smell of Huron was mild by comparison. (Yah, I got over it, but I miss northern Lake Michigan.)

When ya grow up around fresh water, I can imagine how getting that first ‘nose’ of salt air would be really, uh, different. Once you recognize it, though, you get to where you can catch the smell of the sea a few miles inland.

I have never crossed the sea to go anywhere; not even the seemingly-obligatory trip to Hawaii.
I WOULD like to visit Australia and, perhaps also, New Zealand.

Don't go to Hawaii in summer (when I was there, hot & really humid), and probably best to skip the rainy season (ca. February). Otherwise, it's worth a visit. Even on business. Business took me to Australia late September one year -- absolutely delightful time to be touring there, in spring! (Canberra, Sydney and northern environs)

You mean “what function”?

No function that’s necessary in modern times, really, but years ago that scent could mean fresh fish for dinner, or the end of a very long journey, or both. I think of Lewis and Clark catching that first whiff of the salt air off of the Pacific, and then, finally, that first glipmse of the vast, blue expanse of the sea. Can you even imagine what that must have been like; to smell it before you could see it; to know you’d almost reached the Western edge of the Continent? It’s an amazing thing.

A crossing of Lake Michigan in the mid-60s left me with the same feeling. Hours and hours on the sea with no land in sight.

"Duluth" caused me much trouble more recently, as it is very close to a Scottish Gaelic word (not exactly "corner", but close) -- turns out it's from a French explorer's name.

We’d gone up with some relatives to see the lake and the museums; Marine (A) and Railroad (E), in particular. I recall standing at or near the water’s edge — perhaps in the grassy area bordered by the jetty and the lakeshore — watching a fully loaded ore ship pass under the lift bridge (G).
