I can imagine how getting that first ‘nose’ of salt air would be really, uh, different. Once you recognize it, though, you get to where you can catch the smell of the sea a few miles inland.

True. It's not as repellent as it once was.

We’d gone up with some relatives to see the lake and the museums; Marine (A) and Railroad (E), in particular. I recall standing at or near the water’s edge — perhaps in the grassy area bordered by the jetty and the lakeshore — watching a fully loaded ore ship pass under the lift bridge (G).
