U.S. funeral homes ditch the gloom

U.S. funeral directors are changing the gothic image of funeral homes to reflect the more positive image of death held by most baby boomers.
San Antonio's Mission Park Funeral Chapels & Cemeteries chief Robert Tips told the San Antonio Express-News that as baby boomers become their primary customers, the U.S. funeral industry has shifted to a "celebrating life" mode.
The boomer generation is all about convenience and service with a smile, he said.
Tips said Mission Park is building five new funeral homes in San Antonio that will include facilities for weddings and banquets as well as concessions for funerals.
"The days of morbidly gloomy funeral homes are rapidly coming to a close," Tips said

As one of the resident curmudgeons around here, I'll take this opportunity to whine about how so many funeral eulogies seem to be more like five-minute comedy routines. And what really burns me is the material is rarely funny, but leads to the mourners exchanging grimaces of discomfort.
What ever happened to dignified, somber showings of respect and grief?

What ever happened to dignified, somber showings of respect and grief?Agreed.If the deceased was loved and admired then grief and sorrow would be the main themes.The funny stuff...the "do you remember when Mom used to make meatloaf?" stuff...would begin after a period of time.

Geez.. maybe they'd give a deal to families who book a funeral and a wedding on the same day.
And banquets? Who'd want to run down to the local funeral home for dinner? Imagine going into the wrong room.

Yeah, I kinda liked the rituals of a good old-fashioned Catholic funeral with Incense, Frankincense & Myrhh. Latin words that I couldn't understand. Brings back memories......

Yeah, I kinda liked the rituals of a good old-fashioned Catholic funeral with Incense, Frankincense & Myrhh. Latin words that I couldn't understand.I thought all of us Catholics were issued Missals with Latin on one page and English on the next so we could keep track of what was going on.
