Linux growth 'to outstrip Windows by a factor of 3' (Oracle Estimate)
Builder.com ^ | 30 March 2006 | Matthew Overington

Over the next five years, Oracle is predicting annual growth of 12 percent for the open source OS

Linux adoptions are to grow in the next three to five years at nearly triple the rate of Windows, according to Oracle.

In an interview at the LinuxWorld conference in Sydney, the database company suggested Linux deployments had grown beyond an adoption phase, and were now becoming ubiquitous in small and large businesses alike.

Monica Kumar, director of Oracle's Linux programme office, pointed to the open source operating system becoming mainstream as "businesses are looking to Linux as a way to save money," and quotes a projected annual growth rate of 11.7 percent over the next five years. The software heavyweight claims analysts project Windows' growth over the same period as being 3.6 percent per year.

"We don't come across many big companies these days that don't have a Linux strategy, which is in contrast to the market three years ago," says Kumar.

It's not just enterprise customers leading the charge, though. "Small [companies] are now betting their businesses on Linux".

Kumar points to market awareness and a growing number of Linux-savvy developers in developing countries to drive the uptake, and suggests open standards are a huge driver.

"Linux is mainstream. There are a lot of questions that we used to get maybe two years ago where people used to say: 'Is Linux really ready for the enterprise? Can you give me some proof points? Who's deploying it? ...I need to prove the ROI or TCO to my CIO about Linux'. It's been two years and I don't get that question anymore."

She also goes on to point out a shift in adoption drivers: from the developers at the front line to the CIOs.

"We're now seeing adoption driven from the CIOs, instead of from the individual developers, and it's allowing Linux to pick up momentum."

The company has recently released a free version of its flagship database product in an attempt to woo developers towards Oracle technologies.

HA that's funny. I've shown more outright lies by you boys in the last two months than you can find mistakes I've admitted since I've been on this site.

Wait till I extend the linux lie list to go back years instead of just a few months. Then your undying devotion to commie propoganda will be even more undeniable.

Good job flamer, they're going to hate you for this LOL.

I see you tried to make your own "Lie List". Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Unfortunately, for such a thing to work, the person making it has to be capable of telling the truth at least a little bit of the time.

I didn't get any farther than your second link (why you put the first one up is beyond me, because if anyone is reading it, they are already seeing this thread, but oh well).

"http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1608956/posts - Lies that Windows systems need to be rebuilt after compromise but not linux ones "

First off, posting a link to an article doesn't constitute a lie. Zeugma posted the article and made a comment to the effect that formatting and reinstalling was "the Microsoft way". Here's a quote from the particular article he cited:

"When you are dealing with rootkits and some advanced spyware programs, the only solution is to rebuild from scratch. In some cases, there really is no way to recover without nuking the systems from orbit," --Mike Danseglio, program manager in the Security Solutions group at Microsoft

So, here we have an employee from Security Solutions at Microsoft saying, "the only solution is to rebuild from scratch". So, a witty comment that suggests formatting and reinstalling is "the Microsoft way" is entirely appropriate, since they themselves advocate this. Zeugma's staement was comedic hyperbole, sarcasm, etc., call it what you will, but he but he never intended for anyone to take his statement as a fact. But, upon seeing it, you had to turn it into something it wasn't so you could argue against it. The very definition of "troll".

The second part of the statement said that someone claimed Linux systems never need to be rebuilt after compromise. I searched and searched the thread and never found anyone claim this, so we can say this is an outright fabrication.

In other words, GE, the very second post on your "lie list" is, in itself, a lie. Great work.

Wrong like always. Ziggy claimed only MS systems need to be rebuilt and immediately resulted to insults when I linked several linux servers that had to be rebuilt after compromise. Perfect example of the Linux lies we see every day on here, especially from you lately, you're taking them to new lows so please continue.

"Wait till I extend the linux lie list to go back years instead of just a few months. Then your undying devotion to commie propoganda will be even more undeniable."

Yeah, um...good luck with that. You just posted links to threads, not to specific posts that back up your ridiculous claims (whoa, deja vu!). And this seems to make you all tingly form some reason?

You know, anyone can go back and look at most of these links in their own posting history. That's hardly a "lie list", but hey, knock yourself out. Might keep you busy enough to finally let the grown ups talk for a while.

"Good job flamer, they're going to hate you for this LOL."

News flash for ya - YOU HAVE NO CREDIBILITY LEFT (if you had any to start with). Nobody believes you. You're a joke to us. The harder you try to smear, the more hilarious you get. I've been keeping you riled up because your Barney Fife hysterics and your overestimation of your own importance are some of the most amusing things I've ever seen.

Anyway, keep it up, and thank you for all the entertainment you've provided to all of us. In your own way, you're a true humanitarian, selling out your dignity to give us all a good laugh.

The sad thing is all he would have to do is ask anyone and they would say from Windows to solaris, to redhat, if you're rooted you have to rebuild. With tripwire you can make minimize the risk of data corruption and give yourself a decent fall back position but I would never hire an admin who would try to salvage a rooted system.

Thankfully I have never had a rooted server windows or otherwise..

Zeug's post:

"Microsoft Says Recovery from Malware Becoming Impossible

In a rare discussion on the severity of the Windows malware scourge, a Microsoft security official said businesses should consider investing in an automated process to wipe hard drives and reinstall operating systems as a practical way to recover from malware infestation.

http://www.eweek.com/print_article2/0,1217,a=174915,00.asp

Yup. Reinstall, Reboot. It's the Microsoft Way. "

Then, you posted your link, showing that Linux systems may sometimes need to be rebuilt (no one claimed otherwise).

Then, Zeug responded:

"I'm sorry, Zeugma has stepped out for a bit. You'll have to be satisfied with my automatic troll responder.

You Are Irrelevant. "

hahaha! That always gets me.

(Clue to you right here: when someone calls you irrelevant and refuses to talk to you, that means if you persist, you're going to get insulted. If you ignore your own common sense, please don't whine later when you get your feelings hurt).

Then your response:

"You'd like me to be irrelevant since I blow holes in your BS constantly, etc." Classic, by the way.

Zeug:

"Madam,

You are so full of crap that I couldn't care less what a raving lunatic like you has to say.

Again, you are irrevelant.

Don't you folks hate trolls? "

Since you didn't pick up on Zeug's strong hint that he didn't wand to talk to you, you got what you deserved. He was nicer than a lot of people would have been. I'd have called you a jackass.

Regardless, as you can see he, never "claimed only MS systems need to be rebuilt". You pulled that out of your own a$$.

Link #2 is a flat-out lie.

"who lies to defend commies "

Easy to say when you're completely unaccountable for your own words and fail repeatedly to offer even a shred of proof.

You'd fit right in at DU.

Yep he called it "the Microsoft way", then called me a raving lunatic when I proved linux has to be rebuilt as well. Typical linux lie, as we see all the time.

ha!

Yeah. "Never report what you're told, because if it later turns out to be false, then you were lying."

Unless it he reports something that later turns out wrong. Then, it's just an honest mistake.

Yeah, he did call it the Microsoft Way, and he did call you a raving lunatic, and you did prove that Linux has to be rebuilt as well.

That's because...

...it is the Microsoft way (they said so themselves)...

...you ARE a raving lunatic...

...and Linux DOES have to be rebuilt after being rooted.

None of which changes the fact that he never said it only happens to Windows.

No matter what spin you put on it, you still tried to attribute to him something he did not say. Wahh, he insulted you, etc. Fine. You're still lying.

It's quite clear to everyone on this site (other than the linux liars) who the raving lunatic is. How do you even come up with a name like FLAMING DEATH when it's obvious you can't fight your way out of a wet paper bag?

Yes it is. The one who, when he has his nose rubbed in his own steaming pile, decides that the appropriate rebuttal is to comment on another's screen name. Classic.

Since you've no other comment to make on my post than this, then you must agree that post #2 from your fake lie list is indeed a lie.

Which is exactly what the rest of us knew all along.

I didn't bother to look at any of the links she posted because I believe it is a waste of time to feed trolls. Especially raving lunatic trolls.

Of course, ANY server that gets rooted really needs to be reloaded of known good media, because there is otherwise no way to have any reasonable degree of confidence in your system binaries. Even such commands as "ps" and "ls" have been known to be modified by rootkits. This is one of the things that 'chkrootkit' does is look for mods of these critical files. I run chkrootkit on all my linux boxes every night just as a sanity check, not because I have a reasonable expectation of any of them having been rooted.

My initial joke at Microsoft's expense was, I'm sure, recognized by most tech folks (excepting our resident troll of course), in that it seems that the standard answer for problems with MS-Windows is as follows:

  1. Reboot
  2. Reload (if the reboot fails to fix things)

I've seen people posting here on FR that they'd dealt with computers that were so horribly infected by spyware and other malware that seems to be so prevalent in the Microsoft world, that it was actually easier to just reload the box than try to fix it.

Of course, our resident troll is a freaking lunatic who does nothing but disrupt things around here, and must respond to any slap at the object of her adoration (anything Microsoft produces including gas passed by Mr. Bill).

The worlds largest tripwire database ;)

Tripwire is a majorly underutilized tool, though if I was rooted I still would rebuild...
