The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I think I found part of the images of Keesler after Katrina. Check it out HERE. Click on the box that is at the western edge of the bay, up in the second row of boxes where the bay narrows before it goes into the larger Back Bay. The image is small, but if you click it, it gets HUGH, and you can move it around. You can go back to the page with the boxes and click on the adjacent one and get more of the view of the base.

I'm still not sure I'm clickin' in the right place...not sure how much I'd recognize from the air, either. Amazing the detail in those pictures, though!

I should still have some idea how to do some basic troubleshooting

A question. My sister wants to set up a wireless connection for dial up. Can you do that? Do they make routers with a phone jack? I'm going to bring her my old external modem to get her started.

Ouch.... I'm not sure it would be worthwhile, wireless and dialup, even if there's a router for it. Any chance she'll upgrade to cable/dsl?

Dunno....she's got DirectTV and I don't think there's DSL in her area.

She wants to move the computer to one of the bedrooms without having to sting a phone line back there.

Two ways to do it, off the top of my head...

1. Set up a computer with a modem as a "communications server" at the phone jack. It will have to run a proxy server so that the PC in the bedroom can access the dial up connection through the local network, which can be wireless.

2. Get a cell phone with a Bluetooth connection; the PC will connect to the cell phone via Bluetooth and the cell phone dials out. In this case, the cell phone acts as the modem.

Option 2 is vey expensive in terms of cell phone minutes; Option 1 requires two PCs.

Tell her to check into DSL. You lose some speed with wireless, so if it's dialup, shudder. My router does not have a port for a phone cable, fwiw.

The data transfer rate on a wireless network is still faster than the dialup data transfer rate, so you wouldn't see any reduction in speed with a wireless vs. a wired network connection.

Oh, if she has DirecTV she can look into getting one of the satellite broadband connections, such as StarBand. They're really expensive though.

Hmm, really? I thought it would add to the lag either way. Good to know! Though it seems a little like putting racing tires on a tricycle, to be honest, wireless and dialup.

Heh....she might as well do business with Time Warner. She's got a fairly new Dell, an ancient Packard Bell, and a Palm Pilot. She was talking at some point about getting a new cell phone....she's got a lot of long distance time saved up....

I don't know how much she's willing to spend on this deal.

Nope, I don't think so. I think it's more of a "bottleneck" situation. Most wireless networks transfer data at 11 Mb/sec., vs. 100 Mb/sec. for wired networks. By comparison a fast dialup may get 56 kb/sec., about 178 times slower than than the wireless network.

Time Warner would certainly be the easiest way to set it up. Tell her not to go with their wireless option though; it's cheaper in the long run to buy a wireless router and wireless NIC, and pay Time Warner for the standard service.

Or, if it's a new cable connection, just have them install the cable drop in the bedroom. Then she won't need wireless at all.

She used to have Time Warner cable but she switched to Direct TV. Don't know if the Time Warner cable is still there...if it is, it doesn't go to the bedroom.
