Have you read "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"? It is an excellent book by King. How about the Peter Strab/Stephen King collaborations? I like 'em but OB doesn't. LSA

I never had that problem with Clare because she didn't like the girls in her class anyway, at least, not enough to seek them out after she'd left. She had made friends in her Girl Scout troop, and it turned out, one of them was homeschooled! That's her friend, Erin, and they've become best buds.
Joseph was a little harder, but I've had him get together with a friend a few times, and he was content. Now he's back in school, so I'm not concerned about it anymore for him.
Remember that a period of de-schooling is likely needed. For our kids, that meant that they started learning to take on their education themselves. Joseph was very organized about it, and would get all his work done in about 2 1/2 hours, then have the rest of the day to play games, read magazines, whatever. I did require some 'recreational reading' ;o), in addition to the reading he had to do for his work, so he could choose a book that wasn't necessarily tied to the era he was studying. Mainly the deschooling was to get the kids out of the habit of waiting for the material to be handed to them by the 'teacher'. I made a schedule, and had the books on a shelf in the den, along with notebooks, etc. that they'd need. They'd come downstairs, pick up the schedule, and know that if they'd completed the tasks, they went on to the next part.
Clare was the challenge, and still is. She balked at any sort of schedule, and I had to remind her in the beginning of the summer that if she didn't finish her work, she'd have to 'repeat' 10th grade. That lit a fire under her. She had a mostly 'unschool' year anyway. She taught herself Japanese and Digital Video Editing. She had a little 'business' selling the Custom ID cards that she and Erin would create and sell at Craft shows and anime conventions, and she did original artwork that she sold at the conventions, also. She completed half of her Biology book, and is working on the other half in this, her 11th grade year. She will finish up the lab work in a couple of weeks.
We ended up finding work that equalled 5 credits for her, which astounded me, but she spent the hours doing it, so the credits were there. This year will be more 'traditional' in that she'll have English, Math, Science and History, by having taken classes at the Community college and doing the TRISMS curriculum.
Some folks are intimidated by the thought of homeschooling a high schooler, but I've enjoyed searching out the books and resources for her. She enjoys learning on her own. I'm a facilitator at this point, and sometimes the slave-driver ;o)
One thing that is an important thing to keep up is reading aloud with Erin. Find some books that are above her reading level, and as you read them, explain the new words, spelling them and discussing what they mean. It will get her used to more difficult vocabulary, and then, when she reads those books again, on her own, they will be easier, and will cement those words in her vocabulary. Besides, reading aloud is a fun thing to do. Y'all could even take turns reading chapters to each other.

I guess I immedieately thought of the Alexander movie and just wondered how they were going to screw up a Cruseade movie this time.
Well, the director is Riddley Scott, who, unlike Oliver Stone, is more concerned with cool special effects than making social commentary. Gladiator was purty good so I'm hopeful.
