Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I like this show, only the neurosis thing is annoying me. I don't like seeing people, even fictional ones, in embarrassing situations. Maybe I'm the neurotic one here.

Don't like Monk's assistant, though, she's too flashy.

I'll have to watch some more episodes. They used to show it by me but they jumbled the schedule around. I'm not sure who shows it now.

FEMA is sending City officials on an all-expenses paid trip to some compound they have there for training for a WMD medical emergency (biological, I guess). I guess they're doing this for the leadership of all cities of a certain size in the nation. So I and the Mayor, City Manager and Fire, Police, LESA and Emergency heads trundle off to some fort near Anniston Alabama for a week (fly into Atlanta) to do a mock exercise about a major terrorist attack that creates a medical crisis.

Food's supposed to be awful and I suspect both the travel arrangements, rooms and hospitality are likely to be about the worst -- since FEMA's paying for it all.

I dunno...guess it's just another way to spend government money and saying they're preparing us. Seems strange considering the odds of exactly what we're training for actually happening...at least I hope the odds are as bad as they'd seem.

I've only been through Anniston on the train. I remember seeing it on the schedule and hearing them call it out as we stopped.

We stopped in Montgomery for breakfast on our way down to FL a week ago, and when we got out of the car, we were shocked because it was so cool for August! On our way back Saturday, we stopped just south of Gadsden to have a picnic supper, and it was chilly that night, too! Strange weather pattern for AL in the summer!

Have a good time down South!

It's probably a good thing to train city officials in, but it seems to me what's really needed for something like that is civilian training like the old air raid drills they used to do in the 1950s. I doubt that'll happen unless there's a real emergency to motivate it, though.

What, we need to do duck-and-cover again?

Yawn... oughta have been in bed, but the latest episode of Samurai 7 was just sitting there ready to watch... now I really am going to bed.

"What, we need to do duck-and-cover again?"

Something like that, but more specific to current risks. At least duck-and-cover gave people a sense of how to respond to an emergency in an organized way without panicking. Right now if there was a major emergency a large segment of the population would have no idea what to do and would panic. Look how many people over-reacted to the simple suggestion to have duct tape available.

"Yawn... oughta have been in bed, but the latest episode of Samurai 7 was just sitting there ready to watch... now I really am going to bed."

I know, it was the episode that made you do it--happens to me a lot, too :)

G'night!

The thing is, we could really almost afford a VW...and Steve could enjoy putzing around on it. They are pretty simple to repair?

So I understand. OEM Parts are plentiful (the car was in production in South America until very recently), and remans/aftermarkets even more so. J.C. Whitney has a catalog dedicated to them, including how-to videos and such.

One of the reasons it's so simple is the absence of a cooling system...or AC...or all the electrical and computerized gadgetry that comes in for more jiggery-pokery than the engine alone on modern cars.

When we move back down South, I will truly miss the changing of the seasons.

Having lived all over the country (the privilege--and misfortune--of the military brat who follows Dad's footsteps), it is my experience that there is changing of the seasons everywhere. The summer of 1971 was brilliantly sunny and pleasantly warm in Anchorage, Alaska; two winters later it snowed on us in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

It's just that in the south, the cold, wet, miserable seasons are so much shorter. That suits me fine.

Good morning!

Thank you for the info about VWs! I'm pipe dreaming right now about getting one, but someday!

The info about JC Whitney is especially valueable...I'll email it to Steve. I never even heard of it before and one of my concerns was getting parts!

See, I want a PT Cruiser...but Steve wants me to get something bigger. Maybe this way, I could get something bigger AND a VW?

Good morning! I can almost taste fall here...it's my favorite season, so I'm not opposed to the seasons changing, though it seems like the growing season this year was pitiful. We went blackberry picking on Sunday, and though I got a couple pints, there were TONS of unripe berries. Usually by August, there are more overripe than unripe.

Tonight is music night. We're preparing for our first actual concert, which is a little scary - to me, anyway. It's a benefit concert for one band member's church, so not THAT big of a deal...but originally there was a band coming from Georgia or some such...we were just gonna open for them. Now, turns out they can't make it, so we're the stars. And it's gonna be advertised on radio and in the newspaper and on TV, and I think broadcast as well. Once again, it's not THAT big of a deal, but it is to me! Hope we do OK. We're getting better all the time!

Corin, hope you get your truck soon! Burgandy sounds purty. Heh...couldn't help doing an informal survey on the way to work here as far as truck brands go. The newer ones are mostly a mix of Toyota, Dodge, Ford, Chevy and GMC, though Ford has a slight edge over Chevy in the top two. And the really old, amazing-they're-still-rolling trucks all seem to be Ford and GMC. Isn't GMC basically a Chevy, though?

In any case, it could be more an availability thing than anything, but I couldn't help payin' attention.

Good morning Rosie!

How exciting to be the stars of the show!! You gonna video tape it?

Did you ever send me that CD?

I'm not sure if it'll be videotaped...or if we'd get a copy if they did. That'd be interesting, I guess, though mostly it'd give me even MORE mistakes to notice than an audio CD does already...

Yes, I got CDs out to most people. Still have to make a few more copies. Just remember that they're live. If I'd had more time I'da edited out the blabbing...
