The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

With such a long commute, why not ask for 4 days? You don't ask, you don't get!

"How do you know it's the left stocking?"

Because you can tell that the person who wore it was left-footed.

Good idea! Have been reading Johnny Tremain, so have some good ideas. Am less interested in colonial life than what would spur a young man to go there on his own when he has no course of living in England. I am trying to find out more about indentureship and/or apprenticeship in merchants. 'Tremain' has good example of those, but I am hoping to find more concrete information.

ROFL! Maybe that's the part where the left stockings go :)

No, that's the HOSE-zone!

OK, here are some titles which, from the brief descriptions I have, might help:

"The Lion and the Rose", by Rosemary Weir
"Saturnalia", by Paul Fleischma
"Night Journeys", by Avi
"Encounter at Easton",(sequel to Night Journey) by Avi
"White Sails to China", by Clyde Robert Bulla
(Not sure about this next one, the description reads only; Holland 1757)
"The Matchlock Gun", by Walter Edmonds
"The Journeyman", by Elizabeth Yates
"A Spirit to Ride the Whirlwind", by Athena Lord

If your library has an online catalog, check to see if any of those are there. There might be descriptions of them, as well.

How long did the tortillas take to make? I go through a lot of those, could probably save some money if I learned to make 'em myself.

They don't take long to make. The hardest part is just rolling them out...gotta make sure you use enough flour and get them good and thin. I rolled them all out before starting to cook - put them on a plate with waxed paper between them so they were all ready to go.

Here's the recipe:

Whole Wheat Tortillas

2 cups whole wheat flour (could use spelt flour)
1 teaspoon sea salt (or less)
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 to 1/2 cup butter (or oil - I used olive oil)
1 cup warm water

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, mixing well. Cut in butter, then add water to make a soft, pliable dough. Knead briefly.

Let sit covered with a damp towel for 30 minutes or more. Make the dough into 12 golf ball sized balls, then roll out thin on a well floured board. Bake on a pretty hot skillet until
slightly browned, then flip and bake the other side.

Oh, and here's the salsa recipe, though when I made it, I fudged the amounts quite a bit...just used the basic ingredient list. But it came out good!

Ingredients
1 jalapeno (I prefer Serrano chiles) chile, seeds removed, chopped fine (wear gloves)
6 medium tomatoes chopped into 1/4-inch chunks
1 medium red onion chopped
3 green onions sliced thin with green tops included
1/8 cup loosely-packed fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon oregano, crushed between palms
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 4-ounce can chopped mild green chiles
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
Mix all ingredients together. Let sit overnight to let flavors blend. Serve with crisp tortilla chips as dip or serve as a condiment with other dishes.
Store any leftover salsa in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Yield: about 6 cups

Thanks, Rosie! Sounds kinda like making peanut butter cookies but with different ingredients :)

Not unless you typically bake cookies in a skillet on the stovetop...

But they aren't hard. And for us single folks, half the recipe makes several days worth. I only made six, and would have had LOTS of leftovers if my brother hadn't showed up in time for dinner...odd coincidence, that. ;-)

Six tortillas? How big are they, roughly?

10-12 inches across, I'd say. Decent sized.

Ohh, ok. Yes, that's pretty good sized.

I was thinking more like taco-sized, about 7" across.
