The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

At this point I assume you know, if you've caught up.

But...it's Kristin Lavransdatter.

"No, not for kids. They're fairly involved."

That could be good, too. I've seen a few episodes of "Father Dowling Mysteries" which I think was loosely based on those.

Someone I know said they're EVAs - referencing Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I haven't seen. They're sort of alien robot-things.

"Um...try checking it out!"

That would be the sensical thing to do, which is why I haven't done it yet :) It sounds good, though! I miss my Half-Price. . .

And yes, I've caught up now, so "Kristin Lavransdatter", got it :) Have no idea what that is but I suppose you're going to tell me I can try checking it out :)

I'm resisting the temptation to ask, "What's an EVA?" :)

"Neon Genesis Evangelion" sounds vaguely familiar--I'm trying to remember if I saw that on Cartoon Network once. The idea of an advanced race being alien robot-things is kinda cool--sorta HP Lovecraft-ish with robots thrown in. My theory was that the Peacemakers were like angels/demons but I guess I was a little off there.

I need to go work out some here before going out for the movie, so back in a bit.

Yeah - an old Annie Lennox...

Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you

(It's a steamy one ;~D)

Yep... ;-)

I tried finding a summary that doesn't spoil anything, but found it tough. Here's one that's almost TOO vague...

In Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1922), Sigrid Undset interweaves political, social, and religious history with the daily aspects of family life to create a colorful, richly detailed tapestry of Norway during the fourteenth-century. The trilogy, however, is more than a journey into the past. Undset's own life—her familiarity with Norse sagas and folklore and with a wide range of medieval literature, her experiences as a daughter, wife, and mother, and her deep religious faith—profoundly influenced her writing. Her grasp of the connections between past and present and of human nature itself, combined with the extraordinary quality of her writing, sets her works far above the genre of "historical novels."

Uh, yeah, I believe Cartoon Network aired two very heavily edited episodes at one point. That's right up there with Fox's plan to air Escaflowne as a show for 10-year-olds. Didn't work.

Eva is, I understand, the most bizarre anime ever made. I've met one person who claims to understand what was really going on. Add Judeo-Christian religious symbolism as seen through Japanese eyes and a weird sci-fi plot - and giant robots (the EVAs)...

It's pronounced "Ay-vahn-jel-ee-on", but everyone calls it Eva (ay-vah).

Man, based on that alone I'd never pick up the book. What made you try it?

My mom liked it, and a friend recommended it.

I've mentioned that I don't usually do historical novels, so I was partly just curious. First attempt I only made it a few chapters in before getting distracted by something else, though the beauty of the writing got a hold of me just the same. I had to make another attempt.

Now I know I've GOT to find a nice hardback edition. It's even longer than the LOTR trilogy and much slower reading, but I WILL re-read it over and over.

Hmm... what I could do with that opening...

A two hour surprise Friday meeting? Good thing you're going on vacation next week.

I just got news my aunt is in the hospital because one of her heart valves is leaking blood into her lungs. It sounds like she's stable but will require surgery, which will be her second major surgery in the past few years. Please keep her in your prayers.

LOL!

Thanks for the summary. I've been reading the Norse epics from that period, so that sounds interesting.
