Sunshine study finds world's darkened since '50s

In the second half of the 20th century, the world became a darker place.

Defying expectation and explanation, hundreds of instruments around the world recorded a drop in sunshine reaching the surface of Earth, as much as 10 percent from the late 1950s to the early '90s, or 2 to 3 percent per decade. In some areas like Asia, the United States and Europe, the drop was even steeper. Hong Kong saw a 37 percent decrease in its sunlight.

No one is predicting that it may soon be night all day. Still, the dimming trend -- noticed by a handful of scientists two decades ago, but dismissed at the time as unbelievable -- is now attracting wide attention. Research on global dimming and its implications will be presented next week in Montreal at a joint meeting of U.S. and Canadian geological societies.

James E. Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said scientists had long known that pollution particles reflected some sunlight, but now they are realizing the magnitude of the effect. "It's occurred over a long time period, so it's not something that perhaps jumps out at you," he said. "But it's a large effect."

"In general, we don't really understand this thing that's going on," said Shabtai Cohen, a scientist in Israel's agriculture ministry who has studied global dimming for a decade.

Since the 1950s, hundreds of radiometers, the instrument to measure sunshine, have been installed worldwide.

At around the same time, Gerald Stanhill of the Israeli Agriculture Ministry noticed similar darkening trends in Israel. "I really didn't believe it," he said. "I thought there was some error in the apparatus."

Stanhill, retired and living in New York City, also found global dimming. In the 1990s, he wrote a series of papers describing the phenomenon.

In 2001, Stanhill and Cohen estimated the worldwide dimming averaged 2.7 percent per decade.

Does this mean that I should cancel my July vaca to Florida?

If it wasn't for that weird Ham transmission picked up a few months ago, I'd write this guy off as a complete kook (who knows, maybe he is). After all, despite the total hopelessness of the situation according to him, he won't lay out what he thinks/knows is going to happen. On the other hand, his date does correspond to the date (and apparent subject material) of the now-famous "snowball/Burrow" transmission.

Bush Country promised our readers several weeks ago we would post the last email from an individual who has stumbled across "possible" disturbing events. I am going to leave your readers (if you decide to post this) with several links, and information that I have been able to pull about this "end of the world" scenario. It is not just Aussie Bloke who is talking about these inbound comets, there are also some very disturbing signs happening which leads one to believe that either there are some incredible coincidences going on, or Aussie Bloke is right, and we will have "hell on earth" in June.

Now for the coincidences. Here is an interesting article I pulled just a few days ago. These fireballs have increased significantly over the last several weeks and are happening EVERYWHERE.

Fireball Near Grover´s Mill, N.J.

Startled New Jersey residents tied-up the phone lines late this evening calling authorities to report a large orange fireball that passed over the town and apparently hit the ground several miles west of Grover´s MIll. No reports of fires or injuries from the area have been made, but locals expressed concern that the unknown phenomena had made a rumbling noise when it passed over that was strong enough to rattle windows and frighten pets.

"I thought a jet was coming down right in the street," said Betty Ocker, a housewife in Grover´s Mill, "it was loud, and I mean really loud."

Police have asked residents to clear up the telephone lines and use them only for emergency purposes until things get worked out, said a town spokesperson. Apparently the local districts received so many calls after the meteor passed overhead that the lines jammed and they have been unable to handle normal calls for police assistance.

Local fire teams were dispatched to the woods west of town to make sure that no fires were started by the space rock, but none of them have reported finding anything as yet.

Here was a comment from someone on the same "Aussie Bloke" thread making comments about what was being discussed (too many coincidences going on to not believe that something is coming from the heavens and will reach us soon)

I have heard about the ´Aussie Bloke´ postings from a young relative of my family and what I have read has struck a chord in me. In short, there are things happening at a diplomatic level in Europe that point to a major catastrophe within weeks, if not days.

RE: Emergency planning, naval and military mobilization

Yes, this is indeed something I wanted to highlight, although I am aware that some aspects of the naval mobilization are now in the public news domain.

What you are seeing here is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of a longer and finely coordinated military posture that is being coordinated in tandem with confidential inter-governmental briefings taking place under the auspices of Swiss officials in Geneva.

Signs abound. There is a certain sub-strata of the civil service in London that, together with senior emergency planning officers, has been evacuated from its headquarters in the British capital. This took place very recently.

Many US military bases outside of home territory that were falling into disuse have been frantically refurbished and restocked over the last 18 months, and one must ask oneself why this is happening. The standard reason given for these unprecedented upgrades is ´preparedness´ in the
so-called war on terrorism.

The United States military infrastructure is actually quite widely dispersed; a catastrophe affecting the land mass of North America alone would therefore not imperil the operational integrity of the US High Command. The same principle applies to American financial and economic instruments deployed ´in expatriate´: instruments largely inured against an anticipated collapse of the domestic banking and credit markets.

I found this gentleman's writings on projected meteor impacts rather interesting, as his predicted dates of arrival dovetail rather neatly with the current and future logistics pertaining to premium shipping lines, the navies of several large nations, military contingents and the movements of elite personnel.

The nation most advanced in this field of planning is Switzerland, where many in senior positions, especially in the security and medical professions, have been put on Stufe 2 since the beginning of April 2004. Even during the Cold War, most memorably the Cuban Crisis, the levels raised were hardly ever above Stufe 3.

I believe the levels in both Austria and Germany are lower. In the case of the latter, this is on no account due to ignorance or poor planning resources, but rather because of their concerns with secrecy and forcing a run on resources. People in Germany - and I live on the border, so I know - are becoming aware that something strange is transpiring within the emergency planning regime, if only because there has been extensive re-testing of the outdated airborne attack warning sirens.

I still keep in touch with many friends and colleagues who work for the diplomatic corps in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, many of whom are currently spending an inordinate amount of their residual time locked in emergency preparedness that goes way beyond any threat that can be reasonably ascribed to terrorism.

One can draw no other conclusion except that the Fed is acting irresponsibly in its managing the money supply, in fulfilling its duty to "maintain a stable currency." Perhaps they simply see the ominous technical landscape we have been warning about in recent issues, and are attempting to pull out all the stops to avert the predicted crash. The recent rally in just about everything is similar to 2003´s market behavior when the Fed pumped massive amounts of liquidity into the system during the first half of the year. This time seems different. The amount of liquidity is too large. The Fed is deflating the value of the monetary base by a fifth! Why are they willing to do this? Wisdom says something bad is up - big time."

Lastly, did you know that just about every major countries navy's will be at sea in June? Apparently, deep water is much more safe than docking in shallow water if strong waves are blown inland. Here are some comments from one of the forums along with some links for proof of what is going on.

Just why is it that nearly our entire naval fleet, have unprecedented orders to leave for the Oceans? AND, they aren't alone. At least parts of Iran, Britain, Australia, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are going too. Makes me want to find out where the British Navy is holing up these days. And what of the Russians? hmmm.... Does anyone ever stay home and protect their own borders anymore? Isn't that what they are supposed to be doing? Something is very, very fishy here!"

Let's go through a list of which countries are putting navies to sea for the month of June. Take the U.S. naval group's departure from San Diego. What's the official story of the 6,000+ sailors leaving Monday?

(Norfolk) a local television station in Norfolk reports that a total of seven carrier strike groups are putting to sea in June - which if I'm not mistaken is an unprecedented move: "While the Navy won't say where the seven carrier groups are going, the carriers not already deployed are expected to be gone for only one to two months." The flotilla is expected to set sail Tuesday, with the two-week amphibious exercise scheduled to begin June 10. The British landing platform dock ship Albion has already arrived. It carried four Challenger II battle tanks — the British equivalent of the U.S. M1-A1 Abrams tank. The tanks will be sent ashore aboard the ship's new landing craft during the exercise. Hot Fudge Sunday falls on Tuesday this week.

Lemme tell you a little story, and some personal history. I run a web site called the Third Millennium Survival Web. I've let it become run down and left alone for a couple of years now. I'm a "believer" in "survival", but that doesn't mean that every person that comes along screaming about the end of the world as we know it (aka: TEOTWAWKI) is right, or even reasonable.

In years past I've belonged to the "Survival Ring" (a loosely knit group of web sites, some touting the end of the world, and others selling stuff for Y2K, etc). And I've been in many email lists.

In the olden days (roughly 5 years prior to "y2K" becoming a household word) we talked about "blizzards, tornadoes and other natural disasters" in those lists. Over the past few years, the lists for the most part (Not to MENTION most of the web sites) have been inundated and infiltrated by some of the kookiest people in the world. The majority of them appear to be "Left leaning, greenies" (my words and my own quote from an article I did a few years back) who pretend to be "right wingers". There are a vast amount of conspiracy theories running amok throughout the so-called "survival community". Over the Waco/OKC days those groups were pointed out as being "Right wing radical kooks, survivalists and militia people who were leaning towards Naziism" by the media. (That's personally why I think the groups were infiltrated by left wingers, by the way, to make the groups look worse than they were). Eventually, I left the groups and have pretty much let my web site die. I don't do much with it.

HOWEVER, I still keep up with the material through other means. Over the past three weeks, at least three people have contacted me regarding an "incoming asteroid" that "no one knows about". Being also an amateur astronomer, for thirty years now, I have attempted to verify this "astral intruder". So far, I have NOT been able to get coordinates, or find anything. I've been in contact with some large observatories, none of which can confirm anything either. I JUST visited Lowell Observatory a few weeks back.

The TRUTH is, I can't find any evidence at all for any thing like this. I will say that there is another "faction" out there who has been yelling about the "Planet X" thing, something they call "Nibiru", which is supposedly a large planet (everything from earth-sized to jupiter-sized) that orbits the sun on an extremely eccentric orbit) every "3600 years".

This "faction" has grown STRANGELY quiet over the past few months. I believe that this "comet" or "asteroid" everyone is "worried about" is simply another incarnation of the "Planet-X theory". The reason I believe this, is if there were a Jupiter sized planet out there, on an in-bound course and it's due by 2012 or so as so many have been saying, then we'd be spotting it by now on it's accellerated orbit (it would be increasing in speed as it plunges toward the sun on this orbit and would already have become visible, and since it hasn't, some folks are having to re-think their stories).

While I can not and will not discount by any stretch of the imagination the possibility (or PROBABILITY!) that the Earth WILL be struck int he future by a very large body (any scientist worth his salt will tell you it has happened many times in the past and will again, happen in the future), I can not definately verify any of the "astroid" theory. I don't think anyone can.

IF there is something incoming in the next couple of months and we (we being science) aren't SURE it is going to hit, but are pretty sure, and they JUST discovered it in the last few months, I'd say it is a SAFE bet that they aren't going to tell the public. (It'd cause panic, people to quit working, and perhaps even some countries or even the terrorists to get about their business even more quickly!) On the other hand if they found something and it is years from hitting, you're going to hear about it on the news. Period.

So far, every NEA or PHA (thats near earth asteroid or potentially hazardous asteroid) has been reported publically. There are even lists of them that are easily obtainable from the scientific sources that discover them. Orbits have been plotted and given the right sort of software ANYONE is capable of looking at the hazards (or non-hazards) posed by these objects.

If I recall correctly (and I'm probably wrong where it comes to numbers, since I always have to look them up over and over anyway) there are roughly 1500 such objects that have been mapped, plotted and we know their course within a few years, and none of them are going to "hit". Come close sometimes, yes. But close could be "just outside the orbit of the moon" too.

As another posted stated though, I guess we can just wait and see for a couple more months.

By the way, I forgot to mention something. Almost every single time issues like this appear in the various email lists (in particular the survival lists, where this story is appearing once again) the messenger ALWAYS states how he can't mention certain pieces of information "or it will be shut down, discovered, attacked, etc". Almost every time these guys have had their "lives threatened" or they have had events occur that has tried to shut them up. They always use aliases, won't come out and give real names (hell, that way they don't have to stand by anything and can eventually vanish from sight returning with a new alias to start, yet another, fear campaign.

I can't and won't say that "Aussie" whatshisname is lying, but the chances are very good I know who this person is (remember, I've been dealing with this survival community for many, many years and have talked to a lot of them in email, via chats, forums and even occasionally in person. Some of these people are sincere, but certainly do not have all their lug nuts tightened correctly. Basically, ANY TIME someone comes out of the wood work making these sorts of claims and places all these caveats on the statements (aliases, "can't tell you this but..." comments and the like, they are MOST LIKELY MISINFORMED OR LYING!) - rd

Good one. I'm not a scientist either, and if the world ends this afternoon at 3:33 p.m. sharp, I know where I'll be at 3:34.

If I may give a synopsis of all these posts, cutting through the bull:

blah...blah...blah....(whatever this is) will start to happen in 6 days! And will be done by the end of the month. ...blah ...blah ... blah...

Great! So, does this mean that if our biggest concern at the end of the month is still terrorism, the presidential elections, and cicadas that we can make fun of Dr. Gartrell for being yet another nutcase, in a long line of nutcases?

I'm only half joking when I ask this. I've heard so many predictions, and been taken to task refuting some, that after all the time and worry I put into them, after they DON'T come true, the perpetrators of the original "theory" are nowhere to be found. It's almost like they scurry under the nearest rock, like cockroaches exposed to light.

So, I'd like to be able to take my pound of flesh out on Dr. Gartrell, WHEN he's shown wrong at the end of this month. Actually, I have to give him and BushCountry a bit of credit: This is the first time that someone like this makes it easy to just get to the bottom line, which is simply tell us the DATES this is supposed to happen! I'm glad they've done this. Usually you have to wade through rambling posts and odd-ball hyperlinks to determine the date of "destruction" with these kind of theories. So I have to give credit for that.

Again though, I'd really like to see, just for ONCE, these kind of paranoid people come out and say, "Wow, I guess I was wrong. Looks like the world isn't going to end after all. So, who's up for some pizza?"

Or something like that.

Helluh--ohh!!! If any of you are REALLY Christians who REALLY believe the Bible is truly the inspired Word of God, maybe you should try READING it before you swallow this story hook, line and sinker.

The Bible clearly spells out certain things that MUST happen before the so-called "End of the World" happens.

Let's see, ummmm....How about THE RETURN OF CHRIST?
How about, ummmm.....the RISE of the ANTI-Christ?

I know that I have these out of chronological order, but you get my drift.
