Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. There is no salvation for those outside the Church, Gibson replied. I believe it. He elaborated: Put it this way. My wife is a saint. Shes a much better person than I am. Honestly. Shes, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And its just not fair if she doesnt make it, shes better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.

I would say that we can be disturbed by this quite a bit, but the fact is that many Conservative people, most I would daresay will watch movies featuring people who whether it's active or not in that movie, stand against everything we believe in. It would seem that perhaps Mr. Gibson deserves as much grace as those movie stars we watch despite their crazy leftism. He could have said, "I'm a director. Ask me about movies," but he is trying to merge his personal faith in an overt work of faith as his lifetime achievement. The difficult historical questions were bound to arise. He is telling the world what he really believes in these interviews. I don't think he is making it up to hawk the film. It probably closely correlates with what his father believes.

Mel is a wonderful and rightly blessed man, but not a theologian. This is not what the Scripture says, OR the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This is an absolute dogma of the Catholic Church, proclaimed many times by popes, councils, etc. There is no salvation outside the Church.
To: NotQuiteCricket
one of the reasons Luther broke awayLuther did not break away - the Catholic Church threw him out.

You must not be familiar with the time frame of how soon the NT was written after the fact.
John's gospel was written by the disciple himself. Paul was first-person contact with Jesus, Peter and James (the Lord's brother) as well.
Paul cites in Corinthians that there are numerous people who saw Jesus after his resurrection and were still alive, and he suggests to the Corinthians to talk to them about it.
If you want to get into a "written up long after" situation in regards to sacred books the Quran/Koran is an excellent example. But one cannot say that about the Bible and be intellectually honest about it.

Maybe they even include the Eastern Orthodox churches now, I don't know. I say that because I'm sure I read that the Catholic Church now recognizes baptisms done by many other Christian denominations as being valid
Oh, I don't think there is any thign against Eastern Orthodox. Against mainstream Protestant churches like the Lutherans and Anglicans there is dialogue and the churches do agree on points. I don't think the RC recognises Mormons or Jehovah's witnesses...

I don't remember any such teaching either.Yes, but were you taught in the same style of Catholicism as Gibson? Apparently he practices a very fundamentalist style of Catholicism (i.e. the above statement, Mass still held in Latin, etc.).

Believing in "pronouncements from the chair" is one of the differences between Catholics and Protestants, I suppose. I guess it depends on where your chair is. I'm worried about the guy making pronouncements from a chair in a building that used to be a dry cleaners, but now it is the "New Independent Church of the Holy Fire, Thumping & Tithing".

I agree with you redlipstick, have been a Catholic from birth, attended Catholic schools all the way thru college and NEVER heard it was church doctrine that non-Catholics could not get to heaven.

Mel belongs to a group of hyper-conservative Catholics who reject the liberalized doctrines put forward by Vatican II. He wants a Latin mass, etc. So it's not surprising that he has adopted a very nineteenth-century view of salvation. What do you think is more important to Mel and like-minded Catholics, a Latin mass or the doctrines associated with the time when a Latin mass was the only mass ?
To: Bosco
Do you have a copy of the original document? Have you been able to compare it with the "new" translations over the ages? (Honest question, honest)

Pretty soon they'll be throwing Mel Gibson into the Colliseum with lions.
To: ReaganRevolution
I spent 11 years in Catholic school, and was never taught that other Christians or Jews weren't going to heaven. Now those who don't believe are another story. It's unfortunate that Catholic education has been so sadly lacking for a long time, and not just in recent years. It is a Catholic dogma that no one can be saved outside the Catholic Church. This is the highest level teaching with the infallible pronouncement of numerous popes, councils, etc.
To: Petronski
Mel's wrong, but I don't think he's quoting Church teachings properly/accurately. Mel's over simplifying a Church doctrine. Religion by simple slogan is not the best way to go.

Sounds like Mel falls into the Feeneyite error, described thus:
"There are those who claim that there are no such things as Baptism of Desire and Baptism of Blood, and that Baptism of Water is the only means of salvation. This is a serious error."
You can read Cardinal Bateman's explanation of what this error consists of here:
http://www.truecatholic.org/gb/gb-200003-feeneyerror.htm In this article the Cardinal writes, "The chief architect of this error is Fr. Leonard Feeney. Fr. Feeney, a Jesuit priest, was excommunicated in 1953 by the Vatican for his belief and teaching that one could be saved only by Baptism of Water."
I've heard that Mel is a Traditionalist and that might be why he is under this misapprehension about Church teaching.

Ah...the timing of the Gibson smears begins. Im protestant...I believe Gibson is wrong in this. But I wont fault him and the ritualistic traditions of his denomination. To each their own. Faith in Christ is all that matters.
I wont let people smear Gibson in an attempt to anger protestants before his powerful and spiritually charged movie opens.
