Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Gibson replied. “I believe it.” He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”

Don't buy into any of this. Thee are several posters who are attempting to create divisions b/w various groups of Christians. There is most definetly a collection of anti-Christians around. Anyone care to guess which posters on this thread fall into that category? You may need to do an "inforum" for more evidence.

I'll take the pope's version any day over the fine evangelical bible interpreters such as Benny Hinn, Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Sweigart, the buffoon in the glass palace, Jim Baker, the harsh looking & sounding lady form Texas, and the other assorted TV personalities who equate one's blessings with how shiny your Rolex is.

I am a lifelong Catholic and spent 9 years in Catholic school, and I was never taught that you must be Catholic to be saved. Never.

A sad reflection on Catholic education. This is absolutely a dogma of the Church: There is no salvation outside the Church. The Catholic Church is the new ark. If you're not in it, you're going to drown, no matter how "nice" you may be.

True, but with Christianity there is one unifying law--The Bible. It doesn't matter if you're Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, etc., the Bible clearly says that if you believe in Christ as the Son of God and our Savior, then you will be saved and achieve eternal life.

Only when certain people get involved do these basic rules change. That is why Catholics have had problems with child molesters and Episcopalians have had problems with gays. People step into a simple formula for success and totally screw it up.

The idea that all Christian faiths are embraced within "the Church"--meaning, not specifically the Roman Catholic Church, but the body of Christ, the congregation of all believers--is an innovation of Vatican II. Mel belongs to a group of hyper-conservative Catholics who reject the liberalized doctrines put forward by Vatican II. He wants a Latin mass, etc. So it's not surprising that he has adopted a very nineteenth-century view of salvation. People who are new to a faith, a job, or other new commitment sometimes go way overboard. As a new believer he's far more passionate than the cradle Catholics who were raised in the faith.

It's clear from this article and from others I've read that he's not a happy peson. Even with his wealth and power, his charm and looks, the lasting and saintly devotion of his wife (who stayed with him through all his drinking and sexual hijinks in the years before his conversion), despite his seven beautiful children and his tremendous successes, he is suicidal. I'm glad he found this succor for his sorrows, whatever they are, and I hope the high of making this film will stay with him. May his newfound faith comfort him.

Not highly publicized for obvious reasons, but it was one of the foundational principles that came out of Vatican II, paired with the doctrine of invincible ignorance. In short, pagans and animists and Buddhists and so forth can get into heaven because they're invincibly ignorant and don't know no better; Protestants, on the other hand, have been exposed to the "truth" (i.e., Catholicism and the supremacy of the Pope), have rejected it, and therefore have no place in heaven.
