The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Hey Susi, kinda "browsing before bedtime" here and saw your "pings". Saw that Japanese poster for ROTK online somewhere, and my, the artwork I saw really shows Frodo looking evil holding that ring up. "Two Towers" in Japanese? After you watch that, so your evening will be complete, I should send you a 'sound bite" of Aimee' doing her "Japanese Rap". Very funny.

Hope you are well. BTW, survived my beets, raw and wiggling from the can. My parents served them pickled when I was going up, but these days I'm too lazy and just don't care.

I guess I'm late night funkling again! We were busy all day. Stayed up late baking, so I slept late. Had to get out of here by 11:30 to get lunch to the Robotics gang. Got home at 3:30, then had to do somemore straightening up for Clare's party. Was decorating the cake when they all arrived. The two guys who came to the party left at 10 and 11pm so it's now just the girls enjoying their Anime!

I'm fading fast, though cause last night was a VEY short one!

Send it on! I'd bet Clare would love it! Her friend who just got back from Japan received an invitation from a family there to come stay with them for several weeks! The man works with her dad. They work for a company that does tons of business there, and he is over there at least once a month. She may go with him once and stay until he has to come back the next time. Clare is so JEALOUS! She wants so badly to go there!

I'll freepmail you my e-mail addy.

Not much going on here in the Hole so I was catching up on some reading. You still here? Or am I too late?

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcomes! Thanks also to Wneighbor for the pints! :)

So any of y'all reading any interesting Tolkien-related stuff right now? I'm about to start "Tales Before Tolkien: The Roots of Modern Fantasy" (ed. by Douglas A. Anderson), which is a collection of 19th and early 20th-century stories that predated Tolkien and in some cases influenced him. I'm also working through some of the Norse epics Tolkien drew from. I'm trying to find where he got some of his ideas about elves and dwarves from, following up on some passages in Tom Shippey's study of Tolkien that discuss this. Anyway, that's my current reading in this area. Anybody else reading anything interesting right now?

> Yes, Zelazny's one who's earned a permanent, prominent place on my shelves, next to Heinlein and Tolkien and others.

Heinlein's great :) My favorite thing I've read by him so far is "Puppet Masters". Haven't read Zelazny yet. Some others prominent on my shelves would be Verne, Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.P. Lovecraft, and Robert E. Howard, among the authors I've read so far. For the past 10 years or so I've been trying to work through all the major sf/fantasy authors and I've gotten up to about Asimov and Heinlein so far on the sf side. My intro to Heinlein was a 3-story collection with "Puppet Masters", "Double Star", and "The Door into Summer", all of which I enjoyed. The other stuff of his I'm familiar with are "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Starship Troopers". I've been meaning to read some more when I get a chance--any recommendations?

Seems kinda quiet here. Just cleared up all the calls that came in at shift change. I hope stuff will remain slow until a new shift starts at 6AM, when there will be another epidemic of forgotten passwords.

I swear, some people are so lazy or stupid they can't remember their passwords. All they need to remember is the phone number to the help desk. And we don't help that situation when we give away all those mouse pads with our phone number on it.

Good morning! Another cold one out there, though warmer than yesterday. Currently -13. I have the car warming up, but I don't think it'll get all the way warm before I gotta go. At least it won't be squawking...there's a belt or something that doesn't like extreme cold and makes noise for a minute or so. And then there's the problem of square tires...but those don't last long in warmish sub zero temps.

Mmm...omelet.

Heh...I can identify! Then we had one little brute who thought it'd be funny to write "Sucks" after the IT Helpdesk on the mousepad.

We love our users, really we do...

Good morning... ugh, I couldn't sleep last night. I don't have enough caffeine, either, only two cans to get me through until time for school.

I kept waking up repeatedly thinking I was late...dunno why.

I have alllll the teabags I could ever want. Lots n' lots n' lots of caffeine. No sugar...but I'm trying to learn to like it without, anyway.

Good morning all!

Chickens were in a real snit this morning, making all kinds of noise...don't know what got in to them.

Gotta take Joshua to school here in a bit.
