The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

OK folks. I'm headed home in a few minutes to finish packing, get my Betta fish cleaned up, get a few things loaded into the truck and I'll be heading out by 5am tomorrow morning!
In 17 hours I'll be meeting ksen and g'nad and their families outside of the castle! Yippee!
I'll check in later if I can and if my internet connection cooperates!

What do you recommend in radar detectors, you guys?

Hmmm... haven't had one in a while. The last one I had was a "Bel", and I wasn't all that impressed.
I could use one, though... that reminds me...

I believe the Instant-On and laser types have made radar detector pretty much useless.
I've been wrong before, however.

Thanks guys for at least being righteously outraged with me. I didn't even bring it up to Steve until last night. And he commented that when she said that about the bear, I was stuck...because she was doing Matthew a favor awarding him the whittling chip card in the first place, since he didn't show up for the group carving. Remember...we forgot? And i was afraid after all his work she wouldn't award him his card?
See, I can pretty well tell what probably happened. The guys got together with their dads who visited the whole time they were supposed to be working with their sons on their bears. The bears turned out looking like crap, all except Matthew's because Steve and Matthew worked on it together just like the book said to do.
Well, one Sat. a month the guys get together with their DADs instead of their moms and they work on something. I think it's pinewood derby cars this weekend. Anyway, Steve is going to check it out this sat and then decide.
Yes, there are other dens...closer ones even. I don't want to speak to this woman. The rest of the women are her buddies...go to church together and such. I feel strong enough to endure her...just get the Achievements done and run damage control for Matthew (who, having never known a hateful person doesn't even recognize it).
There ARE people throughout life that are like this...Joshua was just telling me how one of his classmates said he couldn't play with a truck because he already had...he said "But that wasn't true! I hadn't played with the truck yet!" We talked about how sometimes that's just the way people are and you know in your heart what is right and you can't help what others think sometimes.
If it comes to it, I imagine I could get Matthew through it with this person...does that make sense?
I don't want him to quit. I don't want her to run him off. We know in our hearts what is right.

Hey all.... I just got an email from Jill. Tom is looking for the Hobbit Hole. I sent a link. No telling if he'll get to try it today or not. The movers are at their apartment in Germany and they may have their computer packed by the time my reply gets there.
But, we may hear from him today..... or in a month. :-)
He got a screen name. AllArmyAllUSA. YEA!!!

When my boy was in Cubs, I had told him that most of the work on the pinewood derby car had to be his. Imagine my surprise when we showed up at the meeting and all the other kids had these beautiful cars made obviously by their parents.
Same thing with science fair projects at school. I found out after the first one that these projects are made not by the children, but by their parents, and painstakingly at that.
Once I got the picture, I did the same, although I had the kids do all the work, even if under very strict and specific direction by me.
Maybe they learned more that way. We did some pretty cool projects. One was on the local geology of South Florida, and involved trips to the Everglades and Keys, on rock collecting expeditions. Come to think of it, I learned alot myself on that one, I'm probably the only person I know, other than my son, that understands very well what rocks this area is made of, and how they came to be here.

I went down the street and talked to the folks...told them what the deal was. They didn't seem to think it was too big of a problem, so I'm taking the tower in in a bit. They said they could get the data off at least "if the problem isn't too bad, which it doesn't sound like it is"...which sounded hopeful, don't you think?

I don't know what you guys can do about this...not much advice can help. Just be thinkin' about me, I guess. The whole think is just very disappointing.Kim, I'm afraid I just couldn't keep quiet on this one. That woman is talking trash of the worst sort. The kind that is hurting kids. Have you thought of telling her of the effort that Steve and Matthew put into that carving? And about that socializing thing? And take a box fan with you when you do! And you have my bow. I'll drive up for this if I need to!

I'm just glad that Matthew didn't "get it". That kind of crap scars a kid. That's exactly right. And just cause Matthew didn't get it this time doesn't mean it won't dawn on him someday. And it doesn't mean that there isn't some other kid who is getting it now.

Well, that is exactly right! Matthew couldn't put the axels on his pinewood derby car, much less use a hack saw and all that stuff! He tells Steve what he wants, draws up the plans supervises the cutting and is VERY involved in the stages of it. He is resposible for the sanding and the painting and making sure it weighs the right amount...but he doesn't use a cotton-pickin' jig saw yet..

They got 'em now that detect laser too. And regardless of the on-off trick, I would have been woken up enough last month to avoid that in town school zone trap in slow traffic.
I don't know what they cost, but avoiding that 230 dollar fine could have gone a ways toward paying for the instrument, I imagine. Not to mention that there could be an effect on insurance costs now.

Cool. Hi Tom.
Thanks for your service.
To: Wneighbor
Also though, and the reason why I feel like I can't discuss this with her is this...she made a concession to let Matthew into the den in the first place. In the whole first place, I'm obligated to her. Then, you know...she was supposed to have supervised the making of the bear and we didn't show up, so in her kindness, she allowed him to take the whittling test (which he aced 100%).
So I'm deeply obligated to her...to the point where she can insult me (I don't think she's aiming any of this at Matthew, really).
My options are to weather it...it's half over, or quit and go to another den, which is against my nature all together!

What I mean is...I've brought a lot of this on myself. Had I done what I was supposed to do (actually Steve should have done it) which is go to the meeting with all the other boys and do the bear carving where she could witness it, then there would be no doubt. As it is, I forgot, Steve forgot to go to the meeting and we did it "on our own"...opening ourselves up to doubt.
