The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Yah, I figure it'll cool down in the evenings especially, so I'm bringing some warmish stuff too.

Rose gets so busy at work that I'm afraid she won't see your question before you leave, so...

Tell them what you have, and that it seems to be having a problem with the hard drive or the operating system. Describe the way it fails to boot up (with the quick blue screen, etc.) Ask them if they can run a diagnostic on the hard drive to see if that is the problem; if they do and it turns out the drive is the problem, then ask if they can help recover your data from the old drive before replacing it with a new one.

If the drive is not the problem, ask them if they can help fix the operating system, either by trying a fix/recovery or a reformat/reinstall. Again, remind them that you want to recover data from the drive before doing anything that will wipe it out (such as a reformat).

If the drive is still readable, they ought to be able to recover at least some of your data. They may be able to remove the drive from your system and put it in one of their own, copy the data off, and then put the drive back in your system before reformatting it. If they don't have a spare system (but most geeks do) then they may be able to do a parallel install of Windows XP in order to get the system to boot up so that you can copy off the data and then reformat.

Also, before letting them start anything, ask how much they charge for their service! They'll also probably want to know the make and model of your computer and the version of operating system, so make sure you have those on hand (HP whatever for the model, and Windows XP for the operating system.)

Uhm, that's all I can think of off the top of my head... Rose, if I've forgotten anything and you see this, chime in!

You don't really save much cash building a system yourself these days. Plus, if you buy a computer from, say, Dell, you get a warranty on the machine as a whole. So if your hard drive goes bad, you don't have to call a different company than if your video card goes bad or your motherboard dies, etc.

OH NO!!! You haven't packed!

Well, I had to do it before now. Gotta go to work in a little bit and won't be off till late tonight. BUT, I don't have to leave here till 6:30 in the morning so that's a little better than your time.

Frustration point of the day is where I'm leaving my pickup and getting my ride to the airport. The two guys I ride with in ministry are discussing it. Told me they will figure it out by tomorrow morning! Hello! I either need to know if I'm driving to the west side of Ft. Worth or the northern suburbs of Dallas! It does make a difference in my route from here! MEN!!!

LOL -- I have a LOT of warmish stuff. And a couple of things for warmer weather.

It's the southerner in me.

~grin~

Bob is funny too.... more dwarvish though than hobbitish.... This is Bob. Think retired country sherrif. And this is his trailer... didn't take any pics that day that show the truck.

The thing that ~gets~ ya about Bob is his enormous smile, but he wasn't smiling on this trip... We were in unfamiliar territory, following a leader that seemed to NOT know what a good trail was. He was behind me goin' "She doesn't know where the H*** she's going... Does she call this a trail? She doesn't know what a G**D*** good trail is!" ~snicker~

Honey goes fine in there. Think cheesecake. It's cheese and sweet.

I still don't know how I'm getting back from the airport after Entmoot.

I don't have any friends close enough to ask for THAT big of a favor, and my brother won't do it. I'd really, really rather not do the Greyhound route, but that might be the only option, though it'll mean being stuck somewhere at night.

But it's gonna be about 70 most days? Heck, around here we put the shorts on once it gets into the sixties... :-)

I'm gonna miss the humidity from my last trip down there in the summer. For some yet-to-be understood reason I really liked the steamyness of it. Won't be that way this time.

Well...OK...honey CAN go with cheese.

But I still think it's not cornbread. Cornbread ain't creamy colored inside!

It's currently -5 and supposed to get colder over the next few days. *30* would seem pretty warm. Nearly seventy is gonna be incredible!

I wish I could come up with something for that ride for you. That concerns me. I hate for you to be in this situation as well. But, I don't got any answers.

Nope. I don't like shorts till at LEAST 75 - maybe 80. But, I've got some in - in case it does get warm enough.

You know, if you like that steaminess maybe you would like Houston! YIKES!

Is there a local airport shuttle service you can get a ride with?
