.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

A Dumped Dog's Prayer
Don't close the door! Don't push me away.
Why are you leaving? Don't make me stay.
Slow down the car, I can't keep up.
This pavement is hot and my pads are cut.
I've got to quit running or my heart will pop.
Every muscle is aching. Why don't you stop?
I'm so hungry and thirsty. Darkness is near.
But I shouldn't leave, he will come for me here.
Several weeks have passed, I am dead on my feet.
They call me a nuisance because I eat off the streets.
Every car that passes, I chase it to see
If it's my master coming for me.
Though I approach those that come near
With trust in my eyes and no sign of fear.
With hate in their voices and a cold, heartless stare,
They threaten to kill me - they don't even care.
Batter my body with rocks that they throw,
I will not leave, he will come, don't you know?
Overtaken with weakness, my body is numb.
I'm sick and so lonely. Oh please, let him come!
I will go back where he first threw me out.
I'll wait for him there, he will come, no doubt.
My thoughts are fading. My chest feels like lead.
I'm sleepy, so sleepy - I can't lift my head.
It's so quiet, so peaceful -- all remains still.
There is my master at my home on the hill.
Yes, I can see him, he's calling my name.
His voice is so gentle, his hands are the same.
He decided he wants me. Things will be fine.
I really do love him, that master of mine.
My tail wags with pleasure. I can't catch my breath.
He came in my dreams, but so did my DEATH!!

Living in the country, we often see these pets who have been left by the side of the road to fend for themselves. About 3 years ago, we found a dog that had been dumped in an orchard. She would not let us get near her. We would take food and water to leave in the orchard. Several neighbors were doing the same thing. It was with sadness that after about 3 weeks, we found her body. She had been hit by a car.

Hi Amy and P&P FRiends,
Not much change since the last update. Sasso still can't see and is re-learning how to use the litter box. He's not drinking from a bowl yet - so I've been putting lots of water in his food. The vet says he might adapt to a water bottle like rabbits or guinea pigs use, but first I'm going to cut down on the water I add to his food dish to see if that will make him thirsty enough to drink water by itself. He also has a problem with dry food - he swallows it whole. So, I've been giving him canned cat food in addition to the high-calorie prescription food he's eating.
He will have surgery again on Friday morning for a skin graft. The wound is too large to close on its own. Vets are going to give him gas anesthesia instead of a general, so he can be brought out of it very quickly if he develops any problems. I am worried and praying that he'll come through the surgery with no problems and that the graft will take and will heal well.
Poor little guy. It breaks my heart to think that he may be permanently blind. He loved to watch the birds at the feeder and stalk grasshoppers that I would bring inside for him. And he has so many toys that he may never be able to play with. I sometimes wonder if it had been better for him if the vets had not been able to resuscitate him during the first surgery. Then I feel awful for even thinking such a thing. I hope he will be able to adapt to his limitations and still have a full enjoyable life. I am very conflicted tonight.

Oh Jen .... I feel so bad about Sasso. I'm still hoping and praying for a complete recovery. It may continue to be a slow process but don't give up on him. As he gets better, if he can hear, get him some squeaky toys so he will be able to find them.
Please let us know how the surgery goes on Friday. I'll be thinking of you and Sasso.

Thanks FRiends. I've had a roller coaster of emotions this week. Found a Yahoo group for owners of disabled cats that I joined today. Hoping they can give some helpful information. I'll let you know how Sasso's surgery goes on Friday. Thanks for your prayers!

To the Evening Star
Thou fair-hair'd angel of the evening,
Now, while the sun rests on the mountains, light
Thy bright torch of love; thy radiant crown
Put on, and smile upon our evening bed!
Smile on our loves; and, while thou drawest the
Blue curtains of the sky, scatter thy silver dew
On every flower that shuts its sweet eyes
In timely sleep. Let thy west wind sleep on
The lake; speak silence with thy glimmering eyes,
And wash the dusk with silver. Soon, full soon,
Dost thou withdraw; then the wolf rages wide,
And the lion glares thro' the dun forest:
The fleeces of our flocks are cover'd with
Thy sacred dew: protect them with thine influence.

Two guys are walking through the woods and come across this big deep hole.
"Wow...that looks deep."
"Sure does... toss a few pebbles in there and see how deep it is."
They pick up a few pebbles and throw them in and wait... no noise.
"Boy. That is REALLY deep... here.. throw one of these great big rocks down there. Those should make a noise." They pick up a couple football-sized rocks and toss them into the hole and wait... and wait. Nothing.
They look at each other in amazement. One gets a determined look on his face and says, "Hey...over here in the weeds, there's a railroad tie. Help me carry it over here. When we toss THAT sucker in, it's GOTTA make some noise."
The two drag the heavy tie over to the hole and heave it in. Not a sound comes from the hole.
Suddenly, out of the nearby woods, a goat appears, running like the wind. It rushes toward the two men, then right past them, running as fast as it's legs will carry it. Suddenly it leaps in the air and into the hole. The two men are astonished with what they've just seen...
Then, out of the woods comes a farmer who spots the men and ambles over. "Hey... you two guys seen my goat out here?"
"You bet we did! Craziest thing I ever seen. It came running like crazy and just jumped into this hole!"
"Nah", says the farmer, "That couldn't have been MY goat. My goat was chained to a railroad tie."

Take Action!
Read: Romans 8:12-16
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. Matthew 5:29
Bible In One Year: Romans 5-8
Shameful behavior is being displayed in magazines, movies, and on television. Immorality is even joked about. The world is seeking to convince everyone that nothing is sinful anymore. So we must be on guard against any compromise in our hearts.
While I was in the military, I realized that I was becoming unmoved by the obscene words and conduct of some of my fellow soldiers. When I recognized what was happening, I asked the Lord to restore my sensitivity to the grievous nature of sin.
A permissive attitude toward evil will lead us to fall into sin. That's why we are to deal radically with every form of wickedness.
Jesus went so far as to say that we should pluck out our eye if it causes us to sin (Matthew 5:29). He didn't mean we should maim our bodies, but rather we are to take strong action when tempted to sin. Books, magazines, or video images that arouse wrong desires must be deliberately avoided. This is also what Paul had in mind when he said we are to "put to death the deeds of the body" (Romans 8:13). Someone who is indifferent to the sin around him or trifles with it in his own life is in grave danger.
We cannot ignore the seriousness of this issue. It's time to take action! Herb Vander Lugt
Leave no unguarded place,
No weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace,
And fortify the whole. Wesley
To avoid being tempted by forbidden fruit, stay away from the devil's orchard.

My missus had a cat that was blind, named Gizmo, and Gizzy was perfectly okay as long as no-one moved any furniture.
As in moving furniture to clean.
Gizzy was a sweet cat, but when he wanted to play, he'd roll over on his back and kick in the air at absolutely nothing.
(That was his signal to play.)
Sasso sounds like a tough kitty.
The dry food may be a bit of trouble, my 24 pound fat cat eats her dry food that way.
We get her reduced calroie stuff that comes as small round pellets.
Both for her weight and her food inhalation behavior.
(She eats as if I'm going to try and take her food away.)
