.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Victoria ... Thank you for posting that wonderful poem by Shelby Forrest.
Weather in Fresno is a little cloudy with showers.
I've decided to stay home and freep rather than go to the football game.

Hi Amy,
I've decided to stay home and freep rather than go to the football game.
That's an excellent idea. I love your graphics, Amy. They are really beautiful.
OK, so how about a joke...
A lawyer's wife dies. At the cemetery, people are appalled to see that the tombstone reads:
"Here lies Shirley, wife of Sam Johnson, LLD, Wills, Divorce, Malpractice, and Immigration Legal Services"
Suddenly, Sam bursts into tears. His brother says, "You SHOULD cry, pulling a cheap stunt like this on Shirley's tombstone!"
Through his tears, Sam sobs, "You don't understand! They left out the phone number!"

Two roaches were munching on garbage in an alley when one engages a discussion about a new restaurant.
"I was in that new restaurant across the street," said one. "It's so clean! The kitchen is spotless, and the floors are gleaming white. There is no dirt anywhere--it's so sanitary that the whole place shines."
"Please," said the other roach frowning. "Not while I'm eating!"

Keep the Faith
When the storm clouds gather
And things aren't looking good
It's time to turn things over
When we've done all that we could
A day can bring us sunshine
Or sorrow we can't bear
But take heart, keep looking upward
And you'll find sweet comfort there
His loving arms will hold you
And carry you each step
When we've done all that we can do
There's one who'll do the rest
This night my thoughts were lingering
In places dark and deep
My heart was sorely shaken
But he brought to me His peace
So if the way gets rugged
And it seems you'll lose the race
Remember He will be right there
If you only keep the faith

When we call on God,
He bends down
His ear to listen
as a father
bends down to listen
to his little child.
Yes, God listens.

Hard Rock Cafe Potato Soup
Ingredients:
8 Slices Bacon fried crisp
1 C. diced yellow onion
2/3 C. Flour
6 C. chicken broth
4 C. diced peeled baked potato
2 C. heavy cream
1/4 C. chopped fresh parsley
1 1/2 Tsp. Granulated garlic
1 1/2 Tsp. Dried basil
1 1/2 Tsp. Tabasco
1 1/2 Tsp. coarse black pepper
1 C. grated cheddar cheese
1/4 C. Diced green onion
Preparation:
Chop bacon. Set aside. Cook onions in drippings over medium high heat until transparent.
Add flour stirring to prevent lumps. Cook for 3-5 minutes until mixture just begins to turn golden.
Add broth (it helps if it is warm) gradually, stirring constantly with whisk until thickened.
Reduce heat to simmer and add potatoes, cream, bacon, parsley, garlic, basil, Tabasco, and black pepper.
Simmer 10 minutes. DO NOT BOIL. Add cheese and green onion.
Stir until cheese melts.
This can be made ahead up to the point of adding the cheese and onion. Reheat the soup very slowly and gently. Be careful that it does not boil. Then add the cheese and green onion.
Of course if there is any leftover it reheats beautifully. I have never tried freezing it.
**I have not tried this recipe, therefore the comments are not mine. : )

This isn't really Texas, but the poem is by my great-half-aunt.
Miracle Of Snow
Today I saw a wondrous sight,
My cedar trees bloomed out in white!
Forsythia too, instead of gold,
In gleaming silver I behold.
Down through the air their petals fall
Making a silent coverall,
Even the lilac's purple frond
A garb of filmy white has donned.
Its pointed tapers are aglow
With God's sweet miracle of snow.

THE HINGE OF THE UNIVERSE
What great swinging pendulum
do we ride
where in one arc
a world is born and dies
ultimately remembered never more
and will we find the other side
to disembark
and travel where the future lies
a far and distant shore
What universal hinge is born
what moments are our precious span
of what direction is our line
that dwells upon this sea and sod
while gates of Pleiades still mourn
the fragile monuments to man
as heaven's lights forever shine
in timeless attribute to God.

THE GUIDE
guide me in these shadows Lord
bring my soul to light
hold me up in troubled times
secure me in your might
Guide me through this battle Lord
leave me not behind
give me more than peace with men
give me peace of mind
Guide me through all worldly woes
keep me from your wrath
help me conquer all my fears
help me walk your path
Guide me in your words O Lord
the truths that you decree
fill me with your Spirit Lord
let all see YOU in me.
