.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

THE SCARECROW

The farmer made a scarecrow
And stuffed it full of straw.
He put it in the cornfield,
but the crows laughed,
"Haw-caw-caw."
One crow sat upon Scarecrow's hat.
He was not scared at all.
That scarecrow did not scare
A single crow away all fall!

THE LITTLE GHOST

I knew her for a little ghost
That in my garden walked;
The wall is high--higher than most--
And the green gate was locked.

And yet I did not think of that
Till after she was gone--
I knew her by the broad white hat,
All ruffled, she had on.

By the dear ruffles round her feet,
By her small hands that hung
In their lace mitts, austere and sweet,
Her gown's white folds among.

I watched to see if she would stay,
What she would do--and oh!
She looked as if she liked the way
I let my garden grow!

She bent above my favorite mint
With conscious garden grace,
She smiled and smiled--there was no hint
Of sadness in her face.

She held her gown on either side
To let her slippers show,
And up the walk she went with pride,
The way great ladies go.

And where the walk is built in new
And is of ivy bare
She paused--then opened and passed through
A gate that once was there.

No Halloween or Thanksgiving in Arkansas
Anonymous

The state of Arkansas recently annouced that Halloween and Thanksgiving will no longer be state holidays.

The witch left for New York, and took the turkey with her.

I know it's old but I still like it! : )

Spirits of the Dead
by Edgar Allan Poe
1827

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

What's the first thing ghosts do when they get into a car?
They boo-kle their seatbelts!

What did the mummy ghost say to the baby ghost?
Don't spook until your spooken to!

Why did the ghost go into the bar?
For the Boos!

Where does a ghost go on Saturday night?
Anywhere where he can boo-gie!

What did the little ghost have in his rock collection?
Tombstones!

I know, I know ..... groan. LOL

Ally did enjoy your post card. She said “Aww…that’s cute”. If she was feeling better, she would have been more expressive. She has been sick all week, with no sign of improving. I think she'll miss tonight. Sniff. We're both disappointed.

She likes it when people at FR give her things on line, so thank you for thinking of her.

Good Halloween pic.

I'll be heading to my buddy John's shortly. Supposed to meet our old roommate from the 70s at his place. The three of us shared a small 3 BR house back then. Sort of a reunion on Halloween. Spooky, huh ? ...

Aw, heck ! I gotta post my pic I fixed up just one more time here. It'll be a whole year before I can post it again ...
