RFK Jr. Moves to Cut Soda from List of Approved Food Stamp Purchases

If HHS Secretary and healthy food advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has his way, SNAP will stand for Soda Not Allowed Period.

On Friday, Kennedy brought his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign to West Virginia, where Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that he will be seeking permission from the Department of Agriculture to put soda on the list of items that cannot be bought through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, often referred to by its former name of food stamps, according to The Washington Post.

But many recipients sell their Food Stamps for a lesser amount in cash (say, $100 stamps for $80 cash),

Having had experience in the underworld, way back when I was in active addiction, your estimate is way high. The going rate is 2-for-1. $100 food stamps = $50 cash (or more likely, $50 drugs).

This is what too much soda does to you.

Indeed and dipping Oreos in it doesn’t help either and a chaser bag of chips and pizza.

This was mooted way back when food stamps were still physical pieces of paper.

It didn't happen because of the difficulty in enforcing it. The EBT system does make it easier to enforce (at the cash register).

But people still use EBT buy liquor and illicit drugs by illegally trading EBT cards for cash (at a discount).

“yeah I saw it being used in whole foods on lobsters”

And lobsters are real food, so?

So, people who are so poor they need food stamps, should be buying foods that provided the most nutrition per dollar. In everywhere except Maine, lobster is a premium item, so why should someone getting freebies be spending half their week's food bill on one thing, instead of cheaper meat that provides three days of meals?

Food Stamps should be limited (besides just basic essentials) to only items under a certain limit - $5/lb or something like that.

Some old neighbors of ours invited us over for dinner. They had gotten way too much steak and lobster. The husband had found work and they were using up the last of their food stamps.

(He lasted about 4 months before he lost his job for stealing).

Fungible items like laundry detergent. Anything that is covered under a benefit purchase system that is relatively valuable vs its unit mass WILL be purchased under that system and converted to cash, even at heavy losses in value.

When it was denominated stamps folks would purchase a qualifying item where I worked just to get change back in cash (larger venues like actual grocery stores would be able to give stamp change but we were just a gas station and small venues would have to remit cash change). Then chewing tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol would be purchased.

ANYTHING that a society decides to cede to the government in the way of charity will ALWAYS become a focus for grift, theft and arbitrage. The key to having any success at all with such “programs” (outside of turning the responsibility for same back to actual charities/religious institutions) must be draconian penalties for misuse of same, particularly if in an organized manner.

Marxists love these programs not for their actual help for the masses but because they are so easily milked at the expense of the society in general in their merry pursuit of destroying the same.

That’s apparently a small business cudgel out here in CA now. The state extorts a HUGE redemption value fee out of small businesses that want to sell a soda here and there and then, if there isn’t a “redemption center” nearby, force the owner to pay cash for returned containers.

One of my local gas stations had a couple soda coolers for a time, and when I asked where they’d gone, they said rather than pony up something ridiculous like $400/month and a fat initial fee they just got rid of them. NOW the guy loses customers, even with cheaper gasoline, because people will pay $0.10+ gallon more to be able to buy a drink at the same place they’re getting gasoline.

We don’t need to ban anything, just make sure people are informed and subsequently responsible for their own health.

Green Stamps were a merchandising “bonus” system. Unrelated to government.
