If HHS Secretary and healthy food advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has his way, SNAP will stand for Soda Not Allowed Period.
On Friday, Kennedy brought his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign to West Virginia, where Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that he will be seeking permission from the Department of Agriculture to put soda on the list of items that cannot be bought through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, often referred to by its former name of food stamps, according to The Washington Post.

That may be true, but I’m sure we kids could still have found a way to finance our pinball habit even with just food handouts.
At least playing pinball kept us out of trouble.
Great party food: Crock-Pot. Meatballs. Equal parts ketchup and Vernors. Simmer for several hours. (ONLY Vernors.)
Where I was raised, we laughed at either and or calling of it (soda, pop, soda-pop). Both sound corny, lol.
For us, it was called coke.
A: “Hey, what kind of coke you want?”
B: “I’ll take a Pepsi.”
;^)
We don’t need a government bureaucracy to sell 10c seed packets (I’ve no idea what they cost now, haven’t bought one in the USA for years). Kill that off and they can buy it themselves. Don’t need stacks of $180k p.a. administrators to oversee the distribution.
Huh? They are just regular vegetable plants and seeds from the store, the link in that post was Walmart for example.
Less govt is almost always the best option.
Same here, want a coke? yeah, make it a Hires (rootbeer) if they don’t have XXX (again, rootbeer).
Agreed. And to the other FReepers who posted about being out of work temporarily, we used to handle that by saving money for rainy days.
Someone here on FR the other day said that SNAP could be used to buy gift cards. Then they could buy cigarettes and whatever. Whether that is true I don’t know.
I do know SNAP recipients can work out deals with stores. They supposedly buy milk but don’t really, and actually buy other things not on the food list. The shop owner then sells the milk to real customers and makes a big profit.
I love Coke Zero. Why is this an approved food stamp item in the first place?
Stop EBT and go back to commodities.
Plus, now there’s unemployment benefits and someone can always get a part time job. I know it’s not enough to live on but minimum wage is much higher than it used to be and SOME income is certainly far better than nothing.
And if more than one person in a household works, they can share the burden and not be forced to depend all on one inadequate income.
And people need to learn to manage their money and to do without the extras. We indulge in too many things that are luxuries and not necessities.
It also helps to prep with non-perishables.
Buy an extra one of two of something when it’s on sale and store it, but remember to rotate it. It’s not such a huge hit to the food budget and can add up nicely.
Mr mm quit a job once where the ethics of the company caused a insurmountable difference. But he had been talking about it and planning for it. I saved EVERY penny we could and we were already stocked up on food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries and were able to make ends meet and pay the bills for 3 full months.
Is diet soda just as bad for you?? I don’t drink anything but water however I thought diet soda would be OK for SNAP!!
Diet soda is the worst of all.
"can work out deals with stores"
*WHEN?* It’s been talked about for weeks, WHEN does it happen?
It's not practical, unfortunately, but what I'd REALLY like would be that the food stamps are marked for particular classes of foods and can only be used for those classes of foods. You'd rapidly see a bartering system develop -- for example I would trade my green vegetable stamps to a vegan friend for their meat and dairy stamps -- but you could at least partially regulate how many sodas somebody could get hold of.
Frankly I'm surprised that RFK is getting away with even talking about it, given Trump's legendary affinity for Diet Coke.
BTW, no idea on gift cards.
