If HHS Secretary and healthy food advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has his way, SNAP will stand for Soda Not Allowed Period.
On Friday, Kennedy brought his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign to West Virginia, where Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that he will be seeking permission from the Department of Agriculture to put soda on the list of items that cannot be bought through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, often referred to by its former name of food stamps, according to The Washington Post.

Low hanging fruit.
“And he’s not outlawing it, just saying, we won’t use federal taxpayer dollars to subsidize it. Buy your sugar water on your own nickel.”
Yep - if you don’t like the new rules for SNAP, then GET A JOB.
Talk about extreme! Many people need the assistance through no fault of their own. EBT, SNAP, and WIC are not extras for any people.
Riots to start.
Which I am OK with. They eat better than I do.
“Buy your sugar water on your own nickel.” Agree. I have no problem with my tax dollars going to pay for healthy foods for the needy. Junk food like soda , chips, popcorn, cheese doodles are not included. But maybe a Coke or Pepsi now and then should be allowed, but not cases of the stuff.
At my supermarket there’s an entire aisle devoted to crappy drinks. There isn’t even room for fruit juices which are two aisles over. Which makes no sense to me. Why not keep all liquids together? Very confusing which is why I let my wife do the shopping. She enjoys it. To me it’s a chore. And she’s a much better cook. We had pan fried branzino last night in almandine sauce. I like fish.
OMG! Imagine waking up to that thing next to you? Stephen King would have a hard time topping that!
Also, the food aid should be produced by American farmers…so, helping them at the same time.
>> cash to buy alcohol, cigarettes, or whatever else<<
What else is there?
That just isn’t fair.
Back when I was a kid, there was a ten cent deposit on soda bottles. We could buy six packs of sodas with food stamps, pour out the soda (like, why would anyone want to drink that slop), and go back to the store and get ten cents cash for each bottle. Then we would go to the arcade and play pinball for a bit. Rinse, repeat.
I guess kids these days don’t even know that, once upon a time, they could get money for pinball by creative use of food stamps.
Years ago people put karo syrup, soda, kool aid in little kids bottles. The baby teeth that came in were already decayed. Gak~
That story is a perfect illustration of why we should just hand the recipients a block of cheese and a sack of pinto beans instead of EBT cards or food stamps.
They fought it when Bloomberg in NY proposed not allowing it.
I agree 100%
(On the other hand it’s not the most healthy thing, soda drinks are partly to cause for a lot of health problems)
I gave up drinking Cokes due to the fact they started giving me Kidney Stones.
Shade in the summer, heat in the winter, funk year ‘round.
I hardly ever drink soda. A little now and then with some foods, but for the most part, I find it too sweet.
If he’s serious about health, maybe he’ll ban a certain large fast food burger joint too? Just my opinion
Finally someone who really cares.
