"Dear Bob, Nice fake news network you have there. It would be a shame if anything were to happen to it. Love, Brendan."
That isn't quite what incoming FCC chair Brendan Carr wrote to Disney CEO Bob Iger this week, but it was pretty dang close.
Carr has served on the Federal Communications Commission since 2017 and is President-elect Donald Trump's choice to serve as chairman next year. And he's taking no gruff from Disney-owned ABC News, which just agreed to pay $15 million in damages (and another million in legal fees) for defaming Trump during a "This Week" segment earlier this year.
In an official FCC letter dated Dec. 21 (and just released on X by Rasmussen), Carr opened by reminding Iger that "Americans no longer trust the national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly" and that "ABC's own conduct has certainly contributed to this erosion in public."
You might wonder what's newsworthy about any of that, and you'd be right to. But Carr merely used ABC's tarnished reputation as a jumping-off point for what really matters to Disney HQ: wringing more dollars out of ABC's local affiliates.
"When we talk about trust in media, though, it is important to draw a distinction between national programming outlets like ABC," Carr continues, "and the many local broadcast TV stations that are working to serve their local communities. Indeed, Americans view those two types of media entities very differently." Viewers increasingly tune out ABC News — and all the other big-name, three-letter outlets — but still trust their KXXX or WXXX affiliate.
"It is against this backdrop — the vast divide in trust between the national news media and local outlets — that I write you today" because "My understanding is that ABC is attempting to extract onerous financial

Frack around and find out.
Just yet another of a millions examples of the Trump administration doing what’s best for the American people as opposed to the current administration doing what’s best for themselves and their party.
Yes. National corporate news isn’t news, it’s programming meant to program people.
A form of totalitarianism whose era is hopefully coming to an end.
Good, it’s not over with that paltry $15 million settlement.
The local KKKK or WKKK is no better than the network. They all repeat the exact same copy. They should have to pay for the right to read what the AI script tells them to say.
Truth in media, should be the law of the land.
So, all media sources should research all their reports before putting them out there to the public. Intentionally false reports should result in warnings to the violators. Intentionally reporting falsely many times, should equal revocation of the media source’s license, with penalties in monetary compensation to the damaged parties.
While at it, perhaps truth in politics should also be the law of the land. Thus, if one is accused of being an agent of Russia or China or some other enemy entity, the campaign involved should be punished and the candidate involved should have to compensate the injured party. Russia/Russia/Russia would never have happened.
During the Summer we watch NEPA News, WNEP has huge news ratings and they have a gigantic service area. That said, the station ownership has a “feature,” VERIFY, which is chock full of media spin. The really lose credibility airing that and ABCWoildGnus2Nite with the breathless David Muir. They have no choice, though...
give govt more control over the media?
no
the answer is more competition in media
During the writers strike it became apparent to me that the 3 industry executives who were collectively bargaining on behalf of the studios (Bob Iger, Ted Sarandos, and the nbc woman ) didn't know fundamental things about their business and their lawyers weren't telling them involving basic contract law - settled stuff. The more I paid attention the more I notice these folks acting like morons who didn't understand their own business. They cost their investors billions and engaged in a labor strike needlessly to get a worse deal then the writers proposed at the start. These studios don't have to do business with these labor unions but they do - so its a part of their business and not a new one. The weird thing is the studios writers and actors are all just different types of dinosaurs they needed each other but instead created a vacuum in a highly lucrative market space right as AI is becoming a tool to providing entertainment content. The AI don't need the studios and the writers oh noes.
[...]I can't imagine how local stations would survive without affiliate network support....the crux is that "ABC is reportedly pulling the marquee programming, including local sports, from broadcast TV stations in favor of co-owned cable networks or those same subscription streaming services."
Still too technical? ABC wants to pull the programming you've been enjoying for free or as part of your existing cable package away from your local affiliate and stick it behind ABC's streaming paywall.

You'd think the CEO of Disney would know the story of The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg.
Fire Stephelus or lose your licensw.
I don't think the plastic rat is as confident since Reedy Creek was drained.
Our local Northwest Arkansas news is more national than local and just as liberal. The blonde is the only reason I even give it a glance.
Viper Iger considered running for president on the Demonrat ticket .
