Biden commutes sentences of 37 of 40 federal death row inmates

President Biden commutes the sentences of most federal death row inmates. Calling it a “common sense revolution,” President-elect Donald Trump delivers a rally-style speech about the transition and policy, less than a month from taking office. And two big-name auto companies officially announce plans to join forces. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Monday, Dec. 23, 2024.

President Joe Biden granted clemency to almost all the inmates on federal death row Monday morning, Dec. 23. Now, the sentences of 37 of the 40 people facing death will be commuted to life without parole.

“I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level,” Biden said in a statement. “In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted.”

The three men not granted clemency are: Dylann Roof, who killed nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015; Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers.

In 2021, the Justice Department imposed a moratorium on executions so it could review policies and procedures. No federal inmate has been executed during the Biden administration, though this year the DOJ said it would seek the death penalty for a white gunman who killed 10 Black people during a racially motivated shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York in 2022.

Biden’s move of presidential commutation, which is irreversible, comes just weeks before President-elect Trump takes office. Trump has said he would resume executions and may attempt to expand the crimes that qualify for capital punishment.

Just guessing, but he might not commute for white supremacists, but black supremacists get commutations?

It says this action is irreversible and unquestionable. I would agree with that... if it was being done in accordance with the Constitution.

Joe Biden is the only individual with this power. Not his cabinet. Not his staffers. Yet they have admitted that he came into office showing signs of diminished capacity. As much as conservatives have seen it throughout his time in office, it was on full display this year and it got him removed from the ballot for reelection.

Given all of that... this action should be reviewed and questioned. If he doesn’t have the capacity for logical and rational thought, no one has the authority to do what he is doing.

Why? It just doesn’t make sense… unless the communist POS bastards behind the door who are running his administration are making all these decisions. This piece of chit will probably sign every commute and pardon without blinking an eyelash! My question is this….these evil demonic prisoners are hard-core murders who MURDERED CHILDREN….is there anything the courts or the Supreme Court can do to stop this on its tracks? This is criminal, sickening and morally insane!

No. It’s perfectly legal. And perfectly immoral. If he felt so strongly about the Death Penalty then why stop at 37?.............

OBTW, get ready for him to pardon Liz Cheney, that POS pencil neck, and the rest of those who did criminal acts against President Trump! Count on it this is the very last wrench on the 19th he’ll throw into the spinning wheels on his way out. It’s a guarantee Cheney is going to walk scot-free while the innocent J6 folk have had their lives destroyed!

I have a feeling that she’s going to need a major security contingency going forward of she’s pardoned.

Disgusting...an unrepentant criminal pardoning other criminals.

Well, at least he didn't pardon them. He commuted their sentence, from a death sentence, to life without parole.

If the Democrats get in again soon, they will try to set aside the "without parole" part.

Best guess is that the Left enjoyed controlling that marshmallow stuffed head, and that Que Mala might have made things slightly more difficult. The GOP likely felt the same.

Disliking this guy and admin more than I thought was possible.

Scared of the next 4 weeks. Good grief what the hell else is this guy going to do to ruin our country.

Meanwhile Hochul says the NY Subways are the most safe they have ever been.

But my advice, just don’t ride ‘em if you value your life.

Coming next, Biden will give a full pardon to Luigi Mangioni for any crimes that he has committed in the past or in the future.
