X FX recently released a new version of the wildly popular 1980s TV miniseries Shōgun.
Shōgun is based on a famous novel by James Clavell and is set in Japan in the 1600’s.
The network shares, “FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.”
However, at least one writer is concerned that the story of Japanese warriors is not “Black” enough.
The 2024 version focuses far more on the Japanese perspective. The white characters appearing in the first episodes representing Portugal, Spain, England, and Holland could hardly be deemed heroic. However, the character John Blackthorne, now played by Cosmo Jarvis, is already a pivotal figure and will be a hero, along with several Japanese characters. Others are already praising the new 10-part series as a cultural sea change from the 1980 version. I ask the question now that I naively didn’t ask in 1980. Where are the Black people?

Ancient Carthage (/ˈkɑːrθɪdʒ/ KAR-thij; Punic: 𐤒𐤓𐤕𐤟𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕, lit. ‘New City’) was an ancient Semitic civilisation based in North Africa.[4] Initially a settlement in present-day Tunisia, it later became a city-state and then an empire. Founded by the Phoenicians in the ninth century BC, Carthage reached its height in the fourth century BC as one of the largest metropolises in the world.
Carthage while located on the African continent was not peopled by blacks. They were likely Phoenician and had ships well before 2,000 years ago.
Now the aborigines, who settled Australia, had boats to cross more like 40,000 years ago. They just didn’t target Japan.
More, the Ainu/Emishi/Jomon peoples of ancient Japan were quite light skinned and can/could grow serious beards. Some assume they are caucasoid, but this does not seem to be the case. Genetically they are about as far from Africans as its possible to be. Their closest modern connection seems to be to SE Asians.
“Well, I’m sure they’ll dig up some queer samauris”
That is way more likely. There is Edo period literature on the subject.
The West African Bantu speakers certainly did have metal, they could make steel long before 1600. And it seems that the great migrations of the Bantu brought metallurgy with them, the South African Zulu and Xhosa both had iron and steel tech when Europeans encountered them.
This idiot claims some 8th century samurai was dark skinned because he was part Ainu. The Ainu were a largely red-haired group descendent from indigenous Russian Slavs.
That’s fiction, of course. But where are all the black people in “The Jetsons?” Haha..... Maybe go take a look at the “Flintstones.”
It’s just now ending Black History Month and this kind of crap comes up all the time. Even now, we are being bombarded with stories and ‘facts’ about how blacks won WWII for us white people.
Let me know when you discover Wakanda.
Not even duct tape can fix this level of stupid. Maybe sometimes it can muffle the sound.
He would have said the same stupid question about a movie on the Mayas. These people are such idiots. But they are dangerous idiots. They see racism in an inkblot. The Dems play them like a puppet on a string.
The jokers here are the Nubians, of what is now Sudan, which are probably the ancestors of the modern South Sudanese peoples, or other black Sudanese like the Beja.
These do have an ancient history of interactions with the Egyptians.
Genetically, it seems not. The closest connections of the Ainu seem to be SE Asians.
A close black friend of mine stated a year or so ago that a black man helped Jesus carry the cross (Simon the Cyrene in Matthew 27:32). Of course I asked why he thought Simon was black. He said because Simon was from Africa. I pointed out that Cyrene is in north Africa in modern day Libya, and I don't remember ever hearing someone call Gaddafi a black man. We both laughed.
I then pointed out that there's a lot we don't know about races from 2 thousand years ago. For example, the north Africans (mainly Berbers as you pointed out) may have been much darker in Jesus' time. It could be that the centuries of white sex slaves lightened up the gene pool to what it is today. Of course he hadn't heard of it. So I showed him my warming/cooling graph below and pointed out that during the Little Ice Age there were anywhere from 350K to 500K blacks brought as slaves to what we today call the U.S. He nodded in agreement. In those same centuries, the north Africans were going up into Europe and capturing 1 to 1.2 million whites, with the main task of white women being as sex slaves. Unlike here with chattel slavery (little rape of slaves, most kids born from slave women were born into slavery), the offspring from slave rape were absorbed into the Muslim culture, with some of them learning to buy future sex slaves. Repeating it for generations.
So it's possible that Simone from Cyrene was as black as my friend...but that means black Africans WENT OUT AND CAPTURED more white slaves from Europe (unlike blacks capturing the black slaves on the supply side of the African slave trade) than was brought here to the U.S. We can't have it both ways.
That got him to thinking. I then regurgitated a lot of history from many different races and regions and pointed out that if we all knew the true histories of each others races, we'd all see times when our races was the villains and times when they were the victims. What makes our western world so much better than much of history is that the 1st and 2nd Great Awakenings was probably the first time ever in history that the top dog of the world at the time (English speaking people) were the ones that had real come to Jesus moments in our culture. There were other powerful countries before England and the U.S. (think all the way back to the Egyptian empire). And there were other cultures that had society wide religious movements that were improvements. Bot not both at the same time...until the English speaking people did it.
That's the part of our culture we have to cling to.
I love it when I only have to read the headline, lol!!!
On all the commercials. Duh.
There is a Nubian Square in Boston……formerly Dudley Square.
…
theyre robbing stores and commiting other various crimes everywhere in the country...
The Ancient Egyptians depicted Libyans as light skinned.
Cyrene was a Greek city, one of many Greek colonies, from @600BC, its uncertain whence came the colony. And it transitioned to a Roman city by the time of Jesus.
There was a considerable trans-Saharan slave trade from early times. This is most notable in Morocco.
The Euros liked giving classical references to everything. West Africans = Nubians was wrong, but it sounded good at the time I guess.
Carthage was a colony set up by the Phoenicians. I think the comment was relating to “where are the black people”.
Herodotus did write about a nation of very tall black men from upsteam on the Nile who kept defeating the Persians who were trying subdue every city-state in the Egyptian area. He says they lived much longer than Greeks and Persians too.
