Writer Asks “Where Are The Black People?” in New ‘Shogun’ Samurai Series Set in Ancient Japan

X FX recently released a new version of the wildly popular 1980s TV miniseries Shōgun.

Shōgun is based on a famous novel by James Clavell and is set in Japan in the 1600’s.

The network shares, “FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.”

However, at least one writer is concerned that the story of Japanese warriors is not “Black” enough.

The 2024 version focuses far more on the Japanese perspective. The white characters appearing in the first episodes representing Portugal, Spain, England, and Holland could hardly be deemed heroic. However, the character John Blackthorne, now played by Cosmo Jarvis, is already a pivotal figure and will be a hero, along with several Japanese characters. Others are already praising the new 10-part series as a cultural sea change from the 1980 version. I ask the question now that I naively didn’t ask in 1980. Where are the Black people?

Toshiro Mifune, who played Lord Toronaga in the 1980 Shōgun miniseries, portrayed a Mexican Peasant, the lead role, in the Mexican film Ánimas Trujano: El hombre importante

This stupid askes this question because he expects that all will be like American and British shows that put blacks in everywhere, even when it is inappropriate or not ever likely that they were around during historical settings.

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was a Black revolutionary General during Napoleon Era. I don't mind Hollywood being "woke" as long as it's historically accurate. But they're lazy. And stupid. And they're filled with their agenda.

Why not do a movie on Crispus Attucks? That's historically accurate.

He was in a Charles Bronson movie back in the day. He was in Midway too in 1976.

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was a Black revolutionary General during Napoleon Era.

Dumas was reputed to be best sword in France. James Monroe, the US Minister to France, wrote that in fencing matches he would handicap himself by designating the coat, or vest, button, he would strike, then hitting it.

Eh? Being historically accurate is the opposite of “woke”. Wokeness seeks to destroy history, as is the left’s wont.

I saw the Shogun series from the 80s and read the book too. I thought it was pretty balanced with white villans, white good guys, Japanese villans, and Japanese good guys. But that might be my white privilege coming through.

I think that is why some blacks here, who are descendants of the tribes of sub Saharan Africa, taking credit for building the pyramids and for other advances of the Moors, Berbers and semites, most with Middle Eastern origins, in North Africa and who do not share the same DNA or culture with sub Saharan black tribes. Very few sub Saharan blacks ever travelled north of the Sahara which separated the two cultures.

Could be. It and the Thorn Birds convinced me that the Mini-Series as a form is a detestable entertainment vehicle.

Can someone retell the entire contents of a substantive book on film in 120 minutes? No, but most modern literature can be “telescoped” effectively — and more entertainingly than stretching it out over a longer length of broadcast time.

Okay. Enough shouting at the cloud. Time for me to take another nap.
