The final four-team College Football Playoff selection process has come under remarkable scrutiny after the controversial decision to include one-loss SEC champion Alabama over undefeated ACC champ Florida State, and now some powerful people in the Sunshine State are getting involved on an official basis.
State Attorney General — and Florida Gators fan — Ashley Moody has launched an anti-trust investigation into the College Football Playoff to see if it engaged in anti-competitive conduct.
"I'm a lifelong Gator, but I'm also the Florida Attorney General, and I know injustice when I see it," Moody said, via the Tampa Bay Times.
"No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result. The NCAA, conferences, and the College Football Playoff Committee are subject to antitrust laws."
She added: "My Office is launching an investigation to examine if the Committee was involved in any anti-competitive conduct. As it stands, the Committee's decision reeks of impartiality, so we are demanding answers — not only for FSU, but for all schools, teams, and fans of college football. In Florida, merit matters. If it's attention they were looking for, the Committee certainly has our attention now.

Go back to whatever passes for governing and stay out of sports.
You (Fl. Government) call yourself conservatives then try acting like one. You have no place in this matter.
Well, since the FSU players are state employees, it makes sense the state government would advocate for them.
Actually it doesn’t. Leave it to the NCAA. Right or wrong, it’s their call and nobody else need be involved.
Keep Government out of football. LOL
I’m sure Bama could dominate FSU, just like they dominated Auburn.
Even though Ohio State won the national championship with a 3rd string QB you think the injury should disqualify FSU?
The problem here is that they CAN play like a champion and and still not become champions.
FWIW, Georgia PROBABLY is the better team. Both Florida State and Texas faced surprisingly poor conference schedules. Florida State went undefeated; Texas beat Alabama, but lost to Oklahoma.
Florida State went undefeated and still got bumped; they can be mad, and that doesn’t mean that they can’t also play with great heart. And frankly, your comments make you sound like one of those half-drunk uncles that have to get kicked out of the Little League games.
Illegal aliens pouring across the southern border, with the liberals creating new names for them in order to avoid calling them illegal aliens.
Corruption all throughout government, with no serious attempt to control it.
Thousands of people dying from Fentanyl poisoning, and no serious attempt to cut off the drug trade.
And we are concerned about which amateur football teams play in a playoff, where the participants are selected by vote instead of some massive elaborate merit system that would probably still leave somebody out.
Thank God the real NAZIS were defeated years ago. We wouldn't know how to deal with them now.
The absurdity in 2017 was the inability to craft a reasonable tie-breaking system in the SEC: Auburn beat Alabama at home, but lost multiple games on the road. The decision committee felt that Alabama had been the better team, and any reasonable observer has to see that outcomes confirmed that, with Alabama beating Georgia at home.
Frankly, if anyone wants to complain about the playoff system, it’s Central Florida, who didn’t have the chance to play many good teams, but went undefeated and beat the team that beat the champion.
Whatever bowl game you pick out, it’s usually not that hard to figure out who has the motivation to play and who does not.
If the real stars of the team elect to play it sends a message to everyone else that the game is important, if those same significant players opt out of the game that also sends a message that no one really cares about the game.
The other options are, if the team is young and will back the following year or the team hasn’t been to a meaningful bowl game in years, they usually take it more seriously.
I suspect Georgia will not be that motivated, they’ve played for the National Title 3 years in a row, now they are stuck playing FSU in a game that means little.
Even though FSU won’t have some significant players, they will probably play harder because it’s been awhile since they’ve been in a New Year’s Day Major Bowl Game and they feel they got screwed out of the playoffs.
Yup...college football is dead, too.
I watched the highlights of the recent Army-Navy game. I was surprised as to how much I actually enjoyed it.
Those players were giving their all. Although they didn’t all have the size and skills of the power five school players they were fightin’ till the end. It looked as if they had taken a bit of time from their studies of their future military careers to have a game. College football has lost that perspective.
What’s to investigate? It’s all ‘bout da Benjamins, baby! Las Vegas has a firm grip on all college and pro sports. You see it on virtually every commercial break.
I have numerous people say and it’s true, the Army vs Navy game is the only game in college football where everyone playing in the game is willing to die for everyone watching the game.
FSU played a weak schedule, so weak, that it is surprising they did not play Smith College.
Yet that could be true of the state government of ANY team that winds up or has wound up as number 5 since the four-team playoff was announced.
Let’s not litigate it to death.
I see you are from Florida so you have a stake in this. Well, I’m from Alabama. Beating this year’s #1 college team in the conference championship also counts.
Washington is the number 2 seed ... they are in.
Great Star Trek reference. I want Shore Leave with one of the ladies McCoy pops up with at the end.
For the record, NIL was not implemented by the NCAA voluntarily. It was the result of a lawsuit. IIRC there was a basketball player who sued because the NCAA and the school he played for was making tons of money by selling jerseys and merchandise based on that player’s name and/or image being on the merchandise. He argued that since the NCAA was using his name and image to sell its product, he should be entitled to at least some of the money earned. Honestly, I can’t say I disagree with that. In any case, the NCAA implemented NIL to head off any such cases going forward.
Florida, you should elect an AG that actually understands the English language. Impartiality means equal treatment, so saying something “reeks of impartiality, so we demanding answers” is... well... STUPID.
Also, it’s none of the government’s business. There’s only 4 spots in the playoffs, which is dumb, but that’s what it is, so there’s always going to be a team left out that a lot of people think should be in.
My stake in this is my cynicism about the willingness of most people and institutions to grab cash by any means short of armed robbery. Let the lords of the college playoff system produce their documents and explain themselves in testimony before a grand jury. My guess is that even if no crimes are found, a report will be issued that generates the desired reforms.
