When I first saw this story, the bland headline (“Frederick Doughnut Shop Workers Say Business Shut Down Without Paying Them”) did not prepare me for the wonderfulness I would ultimately find:
A doughnut shop in Frederick, Maryland, abruptly shut down last week, and workers said they’re owed weeks in pay.
Glory Doughnuts & Diner on W. Patrick Street felt like home, its employees said. That all changed early Friday; the landlord shut the shop down over months of unpaid rent.
Without warning, 10 people were out of a job. They said they knew the business had been struggling, and some hadn’t been paid for several pay periods.
“They had us working when they didn’t know if they were ever going to be able to pay us,” former general manager Kiska Greenberg said Monday.
Ex-employee Shelby Turner said she was disappointed.
“I really cared for them. I felt like they were part of the family,” Turner said. Her paychecks began to bounce in recent months, she said.

Because small and local is better.
Chocolate cream horns, lemon raspberry turn overs, maple glazed pecan rolls.... yum!
Interesting. Probably can get by on hiring two employees then. At least in the beginning anyway.
I heard about one that closed because the employees formed a union and started making demands.
Perhaps potential customers lost their appetite after entering the store.
🤣
I’ve noticed a number of female employers seem to have a lot of young female employees, even if they don’t seem to do much. Lesbians are probably more likely to do so.
One bounced paycheck might happen accidentally, but two and up would normally be a pretty good clue as to the imminent demise of one’s employment.
Personally I prefer my doughnuts garnished with the raw flesh of my prey still quivering as it is torn off their pulsing flanks. Still, people who end up working for free aren’t family, they’re slaves.
They might have made it if more Seamen were involved.
Vegan would mean no milk and eggs, and chocolate would be tricky. The complications might put a real damper on return business. The hardcore ideological diners wouldn’t care; serious vegans will pretend they are happy on a pretty unpalatable diet. But the rest of us are likely to have higher aspirations when it comes to donuts.
The owners being lesbian isn’t relevant unless the owners chose to make it an issue in an obnoxious way.
Learn to drive a truck.
Too many employees, for sure.
“Virtue signaling” in the earlier post about the lesbians made me have a little puke!
I would not go near the place either. The “Queer” might be spread by the donuts.
Of course as the baker you are probably putting in closer to 96 hours a week.
I am going to assume the ten employees is including the two owners and both were the bakers.
So eight counter people.
That would mean each employee was working around 11 hours a week unless they were doubling up. Which they would have had to have been doing.
Maybe a part time decorator to come in a couple times a week to do special cakes and such.
Granted, our local doughnut shop serves a relatively small town, but I’ve never seen more than 3 people working there. Once the doughnuts run out during the morning, the shop closes.
That venture wouldn’t have worked even if the employees were topless.

Sounds like you bunker is well stocked too live long.
LOL!
My thought as well.
A lesbian vegan donut shop. Way to rage against the patriarchy ladies!!
You go girl! Probably anti capitalist as well.
That will show them....
