Lord God, we ask at this time for the surety of salvation for OILINE Rebel’s mother, and that she receives the best of care and healing quickly, all for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

My mother is 85…just last week. She was born the day the Hindenburg blew up.

My borther in law, at 80 yrs, just had hip replacement a month and half ago. Doing very well. No longer needs a cane and pretty much doing all he did prior. Does go to physical therapy weekly still and has begun doing his daily home routine excersizes on his upper body - soon will be able to do lower body.

Rather than have peopl take care of him after surgery he moved into the spare bedroom at his sisters do they could care for him there without disrupting their own routines. Thus he ate with them and she did his laundry and like that for 3 weeks after his surgery. It was a great idea and worked great for them all ...Now of course back in his own house.

Advice from recent experience:

While she’s in the hospital, it’s important for the doctors and staff to know that she is loved, and not a forgotten soul. Friends and family should call the Patient-Family Relations Office (if they have one), often. I’m talking 5-6 calls a day.

Also, don’t be surprised if they try to tell her she has Covid — even if she doesn’t.

You mention her hearing is not good. They can take advantage of that and let things slip by, take measures that she and the family might not want and later say, “Well, we told her.”

Mom was in the hospital last month for diverticulitis. They told her she had Covid, which is doubtful. But just to make sure she had Covid they schlepped in a roommate who had extreme Covid. (Doubtful that she even got it then.)

They gave her Remdesivir we later found out. When we were angry about it, “Well, we told her.” (They knew she couldn’t hear, and she gets by by just nodding.)

The longer she was there, the worse she got, both physically and emotionally. No visitors were allowed because ... Covid (conveniently).

By the time we peppered the Family Relations office frequently — always in a nice way — they were ready to spring her. My cousin’s crying didn’t hurt.

My sister was able to access her record in the Patient Portal and that gave great information on vital signs, treatment, etc. Do you have authority to do that?

You’re under the weather and may not be up to it. Do you have cousins who can pitch in to advocate for her good and check on her status often?

Be careful with PT. If she experiences pain that isn’t the “good pain” like typical exercise burn, back off. A poor PT team set my hip surgery recovery back several months. In fact, it never did come back fully. I knew the minute it happened, told them, and they said, “it’s normal”, although I knew it wasn’t.

Your Mom should do fine, though, as long as her mental attitude stays positive and she has a lot of fight in her. Also, many people are praying for your mother, and it helps immensely. Mom is 96 and lunching with the ladies a few times a week, attending church, etc. We suspect that would not be the case without people advocating for her.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers, and also for the advice and relaying experience. FR is great for this!

Mom is out of surgery. My brother got called by doctor (he’s on other side of continent, I’m 10 min away), who seemed positive about the surgery.

It WAS a ball replacement. Not the pins my brother thought.

One thing that is different about my mom is she is very sedentary and hermit-like. She doesn’t want to do anything. Some of it is the natural pain she has from her terrible double-scoliosis. But she’s been like this a long time, resistant to every single thing. She will probably be upset she has to do therapy at all, much less frequently. She will be upset she might have to live with me, or in rehab, etc. she does not have a normal schedule, never, since she retired. It drives us nuts. She sleeps until at least noon but doesn’t go to sleep until2 or more in the morning, so it wreaks havoc with ANY business. That will include rehab. No one works at night, but that is her mainstay.

So much to worry about, never mind the physical things.
