It’s not that Africa is shown as being too small on the majority of world maps, as Statista’s Martin Armstrong explains below, it’s how almost every other part of the world has been artificially inflated.
If we want someone to blame for this distortion, then we need look no further than the year 1569 when the cartographer Gerardus Mercator devised a solution to the problem of representing a globe on a 2D map’s surface.
Mercator’s projection was revolutionary and invaluable for nautical navigation, but in the modern era, is outdated and wildly inaccurate. You can see this for yourself quite easily – taking a look at this accurate infographic – you can see how almost the entire length of Russia fits into the African continent when turned by 90 degrees.
You will find more infographics at Statista
Now go to Google Maps (or wherever you satisfy your cartographic needs) and measure the length of Russia with your hand, comparing to Africa.
It doesn’t fit, and it isn’t even close.
The Mercator-based distortion makes the country appear roughly twice as long from West to East as Africa is from North to South.
Oh, wait. It was thought up by black Nubians and was stolen by the white slavers who promptly used it to guide their ships full of slaves to a course where they could throw slaves of the ships to feed the sharks.
Yeah, that's the ticket.
Good old Iron Feliks!
Oh, stop all those number facts, you racist! They are used to hide the fact that the white man stole everything he has from the backs of blacks who invented everything!
Try removing an orange peel intact then press it flat on a piece of paper.
Something has to give! This is the problem that cartographers are faced with. “Something has to give!“
If you’re worried about equal-area representations and insist on azimuthality, use a globe (the orange).
If you’re not navigating someplace and you only care about equal area representation, use Lambert’s cylindrical equal area. There are other choice, too, e.g. Alber’s
Not a basketball, use an oblate spheroid.
Thanks blam.

Don’t really care. What have they done with it?
They used to starve and die from disease
We feed them
A world cataclysm like a European war and Africa is in serious trouble
Really? The Nile, Congo, Zambezi, Niger etc
What a nonsense article...
Surprised that it didn’t infer that the Earth was flat, also...
“oblate spheroid”
OK...had to look that up. LOL!
Put ALL of North America - Mexico, US and Canada.
Everything they compared is a country to a continent. Only Australia is both.
Apples and oranges folks - they ain’t the same.
I didn’t even read your comment, but yeah, agreed.
And Europe is just a political division of Eurasia. Compare continents with continents.
Agreed
I would like to see the comparision to North America, South America, Asia and Australia.
What I did find interesting is how much of Africa is north of the equator. It kind of surprised me how much of the worlds land mass is in the northern hemisphere
Yep, it was a beautiful city. I was there in early 2001.
I remember we had been in Zhangjiagang for about a week (where the company I worked for was building a plant) and we headed to Shanghai for three days of meetings before heading home. We had eaten Chinese food for a week. (Or as the Chinese call it, “food.”) Not bad at all, but we were kind of burned out on it.
We saw a Tony Roma’s in Shanghai and practically broke into a run, we were so glad to see some American food. LOL
Yup!
It’s whitey that keeping the man down.
I cannot describe the value of a Pizza Hut or a Burger King once I hit stateside. ;-D
Brother Al, being an Obamoid, (a hemerroid in the rectum America’s body politic), badly needs to visit a proctologist.
