The aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaule (©Navy) It was deployed Thursday, March 3, 2022 in the evening for “deterrent” missions: the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier comes into play in the war in Ukraine announced the Minister of the Armed Forces Françoise Parly.
Our aircraft carrier is currently heading for the Mediterranean to approach Romania on Sunday, so that French planes can fly over the north of the country. But in fact, what will the Charles-de-Gaulle be used for ?
More than 20 years of activity
Ordered in 1986 to replace the aircraft carrier Clemenceau, the Charles-de-Gaulle was assembled at the Brest shipyards before being officially armed and commissioned in 2001. Today it is the only aircraft carrier in France, even if, in the future, the government does not rule out having a second one.
Retirement planned for 2038 In 14 years, the Charles-de-Gaulle will officially retire. It will be replaced by a larger, heavier and more powerful nuclear-powered Next Generation Aircraft Carrier (PANG). It will be built in 2025, for the first sea trials scheduled for 2036.
More than 261 meters long64 meters wide, 75 meters high, a weight of 40,000 tonnes and a capacity of approximately 2,000 sailors and around forty planes or helicopters: the Charles-de-Gaulle is impressive.
Its maximum speed can reach 27 knots (50 km/h) in seven minutes, and it is capable of travel up to 1,000 kilometers per dayunderlines the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
To operate and allow its team to live there, it is equipped with two nuclear reactors – making France one of the few countries in the world (along with the United States, China and even Russia) to have this type of aircraft carrier.
”We want send a dissuasive message vis-à-vis Russia”: this is now the mission of the Charles-de-Gaulle and its escort, according to the words of Florence Parly. The aircraft carrier has so far been engaged from the island of Cyprus in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
Now, he must reach an area that will allow Rafales and reconnaissance aircraft “to carry out air policing, reconnaissance and intelligence missions”, continues the Minister of the Armed Forces. They will fly “full North”, direction Romania for “ observe and deter“.
“We owe assistance and solidarity to countries which belong to the European Union, to the Atlantic Alliance and which are closest to this conflict”, further justifies Florence Parly at the microphone of BFM TV Thursday evening.
We deployed [nos soldats] so that Russia does not take another step and get it into her head to cross this limit […]. We are countries that are bound by a pact of solidarity and Russia knows that if one of us were attacked, then the whole Alliance would retaliate.

“hydrogen cyanide”
Yeow, that’s bad stuff. No life down there.
First fill it with firearms, to ship to Ukraine or whatever.
Then have an accident.
France is sending a large shipment of cheese and white flags.
Target practice... stay out of this dispute

Interesting tidbit about the water chemistry
The last I heard (last weekend, I believe), Turkey had closed the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits to ALL naval vessels. If that is still true, FS Charles de Gaulle will not be able to transit from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.
I watched a documentary on marine archaeology in the black sea. If it was wrong then I am wrong. The deep sections of the sea have very little oxygen in the water and high levels of hydrogen cyanide But, they showed remote camera views of shipwrecks with mast, sails, and rigging intact from a Byzantine ship. It was actually rather creepy.
The command heard most often in the engine room:
ALL AHEAD REVERSE
We deployed [nos soldats] so that Russia does not take another step and get it into her head to cross this limit […]. We are countries that are bound by a pact of solidarity and Russia knows that if one of us were attacked, then the whole Alliance would retaliate.I hope they understand that Ukraine is not in the alliance.
Seems appropriate to post this as a reminder of how thin the knife’s edge really is:
Anyone remember the P-3 Orion/PLAAF midair collision over the South China Sea in summer 2001? It kind of got pushed down the memory hole by the events on 9/11. Things got tense.
The point is:
Since aircraft carriers cannot enter the Black Sea by treaty and carrier aircraft have limited ranges, the Adriatic Sea is starting to fill up with western CVBG actors and Russian CG/DDG/SSN reactors. The potential for miscalculation increases with each addition.
Once you dial the readiness levels up to maximum, all it takes is one jack*** fooling around or one unfortunate/misinterpreted incident to threaten setting the whole reaction/ counteraction chain off.
Wouldn’t it have been easier to fly the airplanes to Romania?
Yes; a lot easier and smarter.
Or to Poland?
No point in giving the Soviets a huge target.
Wrong! Hydrogen sulfide (responsible for the odor of rotten eggs). Also poisonous.

Wrong! Not hydrogen cyanide! Hydrogen sulfide. Also poisonous.

Oh, yes. Flying frogs are a thing.
For years America has lead in matters like this.
Looks like France president Macron is trying to lead. Meanwhile back in America pudding pops is hiding in Delaware.
Don’t forget to tighten the bolts on the propellers.
They’re going to deliver crepes. 😉
I’m not sure that’s a good idea. The French might consider it as a deterrent, but Putin might consider it as a provocation.
And for goodness sake, don't bump into one with anything.
