After Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley died, Phillis was left to support herself as a seamstress and poet. It is unclear precisely when Wheatley was freed from slavery, although scholars suggest it occurred between 1774 and 1778. In 1776, Wheatley wrote a letter and poem in support of George Washington; he replied with an invitation to visit him in Cambridge, stating that he would be "happy to see a person so favored by the muses."

“Abraham” was a popular name for black males in the 1860’s, too.
it matters to us and I am glad to know it but nothing like this will ever reach mainstream Media or education or anyone’s ears on the left and the children they are raising instead of the parents
the left cares nothing about facts. They care about their revolution and taking power for good.
The racist marxists have made up an alternate history and that’s what they’re selling to the ignorant black tools these days.

The deciding factor is always culture not the false idea of “race”.
Phyllis Wheatley was accorded the opportunity to expand her cultural horizons and proved her ancestral heritage was not an obstacle to that.
Her story reminds me of the story of Squanto”, an indian from the Massachusetts Bay area. Kidnapped by coastline English traders, and taken to England, he learned English, became a Christian and received his freedom. Later he came back to America, and was present in Massachusetts when the Pilgrims were coming out of their terrible first winter, and starving. Providentially Squanto stepped out of the forest, speaking English and taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, etc. , and become self supporting.
Is there a statue of her around? If there is it must get torn down. She was a supporter of slave owners.
Its worth noting, too, that many of my gen were taught about Phyllis Wheatley. I distinctly remember the famous woodcut captioned in our textbook.
So these BLM fools need to stop complaining that they never get heard. Its BS. Teacher unions been trying to appease the wounded for 50 years.
Good point. And I always say now, its the welfare culture (here) I despise.
I think he actually was taken by Spanish, or ended up with them. Some way or other, he ended up learning English.
