Who on earth voted for Ocasio-Cortez? Here’s your answer
Liberty Unyielding ^ | 12/05/2018

The question above is often asked rhetorically in response to Twitter posts by the embattled freshman congressman, who has become something of an ideological lightning rod since her emergence on the political scene.

...

So how did this utterly unspectacular creature, who previously worked as a bartender and a waitress in a taqueria, win a seat in Congress at the tender age of 28? A lot can be construed from census data on New York’s 14th congressional district, which she clutched away from a veteran Democratic congressman.

It's a mystery how someone so blatantly ignorant can go from bartender to Congress.

Not if you live in NY.

The facts:

Nearly half the people living in the district are Hispanic. The next nearest demographic is whites, who comprise 24% of the population.

Forty-seven percent of the residents are foreign-born, with 56% — including Ocasio-Cortez’s mother — having emigrated from Latin America.

Sixty-seven percent speak a language other than English at home with 46% speaking Spanish.

When it comes to education, 53% have either a high school diploma or no “degree” at all. Only 17% have a bachelor’s degree from college.

At $58,331, the median household income falls just shy of the median for the United States, which is $60,336.

Because the voters are equally as ignorant.

As I’ve often said when pondering various Congresscritters (Cynthia McKinney comes to mind from 20 years ago, but there are plenty of others who fit the bill):

What scares me is not that such a person exists, but that a Congressional District full of people who will vote such a person into office exists.

It was partially the high immigrant population and partially the fact that Crowley didn’t even bother to campaign because he thought he had it in the bag.

That said, are all “minorities” henceforth going to be represented by ignorant, nasty, female wack-jobs? Think Maxine Waters for the pattern.

Great summary. And less than a U.S. median family income in NYC means you’re poor.

It’s the cities. Look at New York by county in the 2016 election and it appears to be a red state.

This is all well and good, but unfortunately these facts are pretty useless in light of REAL data

She won the general election by winnin the primary. On that primary victory,

Maps compiled by the CUNY Center for Urban Research show that support in the election that has the country buzzing did not break down neatly on racial lines; in fact, Ocasio-Cortez maintained strong support throughout the district, across areas of various demographic makeups.

“This wasn’t a fluke,” said Steven Romalewski, of the Center for Urban Research. “She was able to get voters from almost every neighborhood to come out and support her.” Romalewski noted that, contrary to the conventional wisdom of voting on racial lines, the areas where Ocasio-Cortez’s showing was strongest were areas that weren’t predominantly Hispanic, signaling that her showing may not have been due to the district’s changing demographics (it has been steadily becoming less white for years), but due to desire for change from Crowley.

I too think she's a dingbat and a never-ending source of humor that should be ridiculed. But she won the primary on about 12% voter turnout...how many Deplorables could have taken a congressional seat in a similar manner? She may be idiotic but her ground game got it done.

All these articles on Cortez the Killer are the conservative equivalent to Dems losing their mind over Trump tweets. Ignore her and get to work. Trump won by 78k votes. If we take the next 2 years and keep thinking the Dems won by fraud and this sort of identity politics and that we needn't do anything for Trump to get re-elected, we will get 4 years of President Kamala Harris and her Veep Spartacus. We need to build a tsunami of MAGA-loving voters by red-pilling Normal Centrists that overwhelm Dem fraud.

This is the result of moving toward direct democracy.

The Media promoted direct primaries, as a way around the power of the Parties. This was to transfer power from the Parties to the Media. The Media has more power to affect direct elections than insider Party deals.

Ocasio Cortez would never have been selected by the Democrat party to represent the District. When the parties selected the candidates, you had to prove yourself to be a loyal party member before you were ever selected as a candidate.

While the primary system transferred power from the Parties to the Media, it also gave the people chances to directly select candidates.

When the people lost enough confidence in the Media, we got Donald Trump.

Both Donald Trump and Ocasio Cortez show the dwindling power of the Parties and the Media.

Bobcat Goldthwait had a routine where he talked about an aptitude test he took in High School and scored in the bottom 5th percentile. He rationalized that if he was in a room of a hundred people, there would be four people dumber than him. He boasted that if he could find those four people he could proclaim himself their leader.

Pretty much explains the Ocasio-Cortez phenomenon.

So many pundits are digging for demographic, political, social, cultural reasons for her election, thinking they will be identified as great pundits and commentators if they can be the one to fully explain it, and yet, there is a simple time-worn adage that explains the whole thing: "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."

I saw a very interesting report about the Democratic primary race in this district a while back. Apparently the Hispanics voted mostly for Cowley and the white people voted for this dingbat.

Same can be said for Kalifornians moving to other states to make their new homes just like Kalifornia. They’ve crapped their own nest (literally in SF), can’t stand the smell, so they want to go dirty up other states.
