VANITY--Trip to Maine

Posted on 06/18/2018 1:49:16 PM PDT by AbolishCSEU

Planning a trip to Old Orchard Beach Maine the end of August. Hubs has never been there. Looking for some recommendations on fishing charters, restaurants, etc.

We are big seafood fans! Will be arriving in Portland first.

Watching .... Hubs was let go in a mass firing 2 weeks ago. I’ve been out (of an actual, real job) since 2009. NOTHING in the Albany NY area anymore, Portland is is our short list for moves, since it’s got a lot of employment activity. We’ll be taking a short trip up there in a week or two, to check it out.

You have to take a trip to Freeport to the LlBean home store. It’s fascinating to see a town turn itself into outlet mall.

Downtown Portland, the Old port is good for an afternoon.

Mexico? No good. It’s two hours north of Portland and you pass thru East Somalia to get there. ...Unless you meant the other Mexico.

We always stop at D’Amato’s deli

I grew up in Maine and all my extended family still live there, but I've only been back a dozen times in the last thirty years. Whenever I'm there, I always have to get an Italian sandwich from D'Amato's. I used to drive a delivery truck down route 1, stopping in every little coast town. Camden is by far the most quintessential Maine town. Go to Camden if you have a chance.

On your return will you be coming to Bar Harbor and/or
Ellsworth?

Royal River grill house in Yarmouth is a great place for a high end lunch after you drive up ta Beans in Freeport. The Harrasseeket Inn in Freeport usually has a good lunch too.

Portland has turned into a tiresome destination with hordes of homeless. Worth about an afternoon in the old Port. Don’t miss Abacus Art Gallery and Gift shop on Exchange Street.

Kennebunkport is sweeter, and you get the same ambiance without the human waste.

OOB has a great little moderately priced restaurant right on the drag called The Bell Buoy. Nothing fancy but good food.

We’re gonna base camp out of Calais, ME (family & friends there). From there, we plan on taking Rte 1 all the way to Acadia Natl. Park, then on down to Portland/OOB area. Both Ellsworth and Bar Harbor are on our route going down to OOB.
On the return from Nova Scotia, We’ ll be coming back across New Brunswick, crossing the border in Calais, ME to our base camp.

Ken’s Place Seafood Restaurant.

Half-way between Portland and Old Orchard.

Great fried clams in heavy batter.

My dad grew up in Rumford, right there. ‘15 we went up there and finally saw my grandpa’s house for the first time in 30 years, with my son. I remember one summer we were up there, we caught July 4 fireworks at Mexico.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, I’ve been following the news up there and the “Maine Somali issue” since it started. We definitely don’t want any trouble, especially that kind of trouble. We’ll be mostly traveling along the coast..US Rte.1.

My ex works as a copy editor for the NYS legislation in Albany. We live between Rochester and Syracuse. Upstate is pretty much dead as it feeds downstate.

Yeah, and my Canadian aunt in “upper” Lewiston (they have a very remote farm) out of nowhere was showing us the local paper and telling us how the Moslems are so good and normal. I’m sure my uncle would be apoplectic if he had all his senses anymore. I don’t know why she felt the need to praise them, I must’ve made some remark that flagged me as conservative/anti-Moslem. She’s always trying to be nice but geesh.

We spent a week in Maine few years ago. We stopped in Camden- and stayed at Mount Battie Inn. Beautiful little place.

Our favorite place was Oqunquit- and walking the Marginal Way- just breath taking.

Been to Maine 3 times, we love it.

I lived near Portland for 27 years, and just moved to MA last year. Not to be missed: Portland Head Light, inside Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth. Spectacular views of Casco Bay from the most photographed lighthouse in the country.

Lobster Shack at 2 Lights, Cape Elizabeth.

Walk around Kennebunkport, and Portland’s Old Port. Tons of restaurants. My favorite was Fore Street.

I know a lot of businesses in southern Maine. If you let me know what Hubs is looking for, maybe I can point you in the right direction.

I used to go to Portland for business a lot over 20 years ago. A place that was, I think, new at the time called "Street and Company", a few blocks away from the waterfront. It was phenomenal, fantastic pasta and seafood. their seafood fra diavolo in particular was unreal. I looked it up and they still exist and have tremendous reviews on Trip advisor. The issue is that they used to be pretty reasonable when they were starting out, now it appears they are a premium price place. But if you want to splurge, well, here's a link to the reviews:
