OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '70S.
The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '70s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.
The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown.
NO equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will ONLY be counted if the "ballot" is COMPLETE.
*ROUND 1*
We begin by taking the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets of 64 for the rest of the contest).
1970 "I'll Be There" The Jackson 5
1971 "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond
1972 "Lean on Me" Bill Withers
1973 "Crocodile Rock" Elton John
1974 "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" MFSB
1975 "Fame" David Bowie
1976 "Love Machine" The Miracles
1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
1978 "Baby Come Back" Player
1979 "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer
I never knew Lennon was a part of that song! Crazy...
Bohemian Rhepsody by Queen, 1975
Interesting story! LOL
One of the black channels keeps showing the TV movie on the J5. Caught some of it one time; the dad was being competitive again and going on about the Osmonds and they had to beat them out. Little Michael whined that he liked them and they were nice.
according to wikipedia — Carlos Alomar wrote the stupid obnoxious guitar riff :-)
“There, Carlos Alomar had developed a guitar riff for Bowie’s cover of “Footstompin’” by the Flairs, which Bowie thought was “a waste” to give to a cover. Lennon, who was in the studio with them, sang “aim” over the riff, which Bowie turned into “Fame” and he thereafter wrote the rest of the lyrics to the song.”
What? No Frank Zappa?
The best of the 70’s was Carole King’s “It’s too late” from her album “Tapestry”, 1971.
You just reminded me what a crappy decade the 70s were for mainstream music.
She's been persona non grata for me ever since she serenaded Fidel Castro with "You've Got a Friend".
Hello Darlin 70
Mr. Bojangles 71
Rocky Mountain High 73
If we make it through December 73
Rhinestone Cowboy 75
Luckinbach Texas 77
Lucille 77
Best 2 songs...1900’s...
Amarillo By Morning & Crazy
The City of New Orleans, Arlo Guthrie version 72
There are a ton of good songs left off of that list.
1974 “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” MFSB
1975 “Fame” David Bowie
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles
1972 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
1973 “Crocodile Rock” Elton John
1978 “Baby Come Back” Player
1979 “Hot Stuff” Donna Summer
1977 “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Thelma Houston
1970 “I’ll Be There” The Jackson 5
1971 “Go Away Little Girl” Donny Osmond
Best to worst:
1977 “Don’t Leave Me This Way” Thelma Houston
1970 “I’ll Be There” The Jackson 5
1975 “Fame” David Bowie
1979 “Hot Stuff” Donna Summer
1978 “Baby Come Back” Player
1972 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
1974 “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” MFSB
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles
1971 “Go Away Little Girl” Donny Osmond
1973 “Crocodile Rock” Elton John
1979 "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer
1978 "Baby Come Back" Player
1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
1971 "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond
1972 "Lean on Me" Bill Withers
1975 "Fame" David Bowie
1976 "Love Machine" The Miracles
1970 "I'll Be There" The Jackson 5
1974 "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" MFSB
Of THAT list, the only two that are any good to me are “Fame” by Bowie and “Baby Come Back” by Player.
Crocodile Rock was Elton’s lamest song ever. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” should be there instead, or “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”. Although I’m not a big Elton fan, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” as an album is probably one of the best albums ever, IMHO.
The rest of the list ... ehh... Hardly a guitar anywhere to be heard in there...
Well, they’re Billboard’s most popular, so people then disagreed with you.
I actually left off listening to the pop stuff as the decade went on. Everything derivative or Hollywood.
