OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '70S.
The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '70s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.
The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown.
NO equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will ONLY be counted if the "ballot" is COMPLETE.
*ROUND 1*
We begin by taking the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets of 64 for the rest of the contest).
1970 "I'll Be There" The Jackson 5
1971 "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond
1972 "Lean on Me" Bill Withers
1973 "Crocodile Rock" Elton John
1974 "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" MFSB
1975 "Fame" David Bowie
1976 "Love Machine" The Miracles
1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
1978 "Baby Come Back" Player
1979 "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer
is that White Sox\Comiskey (Chicagoans pronounce it Cominskey) park and crazy Steve Dahl’s Disco Demolition night ?
Thanks!

>>The best of the 70s was Carole Kings Its too late from her album Tapestry, 1971.
>She’s been persona non grata for me ever since she serenaded Fidel Castro with “You’ve Got a Friend”.
Just seems a weird choice in any measure: one of 100,000 sappy out-of-love songs, the kind of which the 70s were reviled for in the 80s (until classic rock stations re-wrote everyone’s memory), demonstrating no particular melodic or harmonic beauty, musical chops, or even great vocal performance. The fact that she was a commie babe, in addition to being no better than your typical high-school musical performer, just deducts further points.
At least “I Feel the Earth,” and “Natural Woman,” are much more interesting musically, and “You’ve Got a Friend” (before being ruined by the Castro serenade) can occasionally be pleasant if one is in a particularly mawkish mood.
Do you want to be off this round, or the whole contest?
I’m a Cub fan who has apathy for the White Sox.
In between games of a double header ( what is that ?)
It got ugly quick and I truly thought they were going to bring down the park.
Never mind it was all concrete and steel.
1976 “Love Machine” The Miracles

#18 on the year, so yes, misses our survey.
Oh, the results of this round? Or the list to start? (LOL - there is always lots of griping about the entries - even though it is unbiased and strictly from charts.)
Yeah, I find I’m usually out-voted and my faves don’t make it through mostly, I guess due to those very gripers who vote for the most avante-garde they can.
