Dear FReepdom,
Well, I'm on the virtual road again, lookin' for a job suitable for a high tech redneck as I camp out in a cheap motel and drive a rented U-Haul pickup truck in Gainesville, Florida.
I've already put in for a couple of jobs that are telecommute. But I practically got shanghaied into submitting an application to a company called ASML in Wilton, Connecticut.
On paper, at least, I might be able to aggressively jump into this job, which pays $70/hr as contract.
Which money is sorely needed if I actually went there. Multi thousand dollar apartments. That's serious green.
But I did an overview of the situation that I'd face. I've been on a serious Christian spiritual thrust, and I mean like I'm channeling Jesus so strong sometimes that it's like I identify right down to the guts with His manly redneck side. And I have written more than one gospel song in first person prophetic mode (laden with His promises, addressed right to the listener).
And that's a problem now, I foresee. Because I can already envision what will happen when I go into one of those etiolated New England churches, or what's left of them. This ain't yesteryear's Puritans, who would understand. When those Puritans died, nothing replaced them. Only the shell of their legacy, which is painfully worldly now. I saw it happen in redneck Gainesville, how much more in New England? They serve out little spoonfuls of tincture of Jesus when I wanna haul out a bucket of stronger stuff and say HERE! And I'd get rebuffed at least, if not kicked out.
And wealth is leaving Connecticut (for what that's worth, but it probably augurs worse taxes or else a bad bust).
And then there's the Sandy Hook shooting. That was well chewed over on FR, but what strikes me is the way they reacted to it. There was such a hush-hush about the local details that some have proposed that the event was fabricated. I don't believe that myself. My hunch is that Sandy Hook was so ashamed -- not grieved, as in the church shooting in Texas, but ashamed -- that they sanitized it. Which is why not even obituaries, something that a more Christian, country-minded folk would not have omitted. And shame is the obverse of pride. I wouldn't get along with those folks as the robust "humble redneck" at all! It would be stilted to an unreal degree.
That said, if I absolutely HAD to go to Connecticut, what on earth could a Redneck do in that Yankee land? Beside pine away wishing he was down south again?
As a native born North Carolinian I would never consider moving to the Soviet Northeast, the realm of gun control and atheism. Not for any amount of money.
Heh heh heh heh... I get your drift.
If I had a serious mission, I’d do it.
I could pass on the gun issue at first... as my redneckitude has been growing on me from the Lord. It’s not like I was utterly steeped in it from birth. It’s a born-again thang.
But the spiritual is a non negotiable to me. I’d be a frustrated, frustrated lay preacher.
But that atheism. It’s like a vacuum cleaner job on their souls. How do they stand it? They must think the South is terminally weird.
I was in Gainesville yesterday fixing my parent’s dishwasher, security system, PC, and Apple TV.
You are joking?
There is NO WAY on God’s good green earth that this old boy could ever be dragged to CT for anything. I do go to Maine quite often. However, before I cross the PA/NY line, I make sure I got plenty of snacks/water, an empty bladder and a fully topped-off tank of diesel. I do NOT stop in NY, CT, MA for anything...not even to pee. I don’t spend a single cent on food, fuel, lodging etc. in any of those rat-infested commie states other than for tolls.
Every time I see one of the license plates: “Constitution State”, I bust out LMFAO.
Go to an independent fundamental Baptist Church.
I know that area just to drive through, there are a lot of pretty areas near there. Can’t really tell you about the bigger issues, except that FReepers seem to find at least a few kindred spirits in most parts of the country. You could do a lot worse than living and working around Wilton. Good luck!
Etoliated?
Treat it like a redneck pilgrimage, converting the Northeast to conservatism.
Yeah, that’s a word I learned before I was born-again redneck and just a smarty pants.
It means gone pale (like a leaf for lack of sunlight). And living in spiritual shadow does that, figuratively.
Worked and loved up there and hated it with a passion. Thankfully we got back south in NE, FL and will never take another job up there again.
From traffic, rudeness, no manners, weather, taxes, cost of living , politics.etc etc etc
One of my best friends was a self-proclaimed redneck who lived in San Francisco due to his job. Dude just simply didn’t care who freaked out about his style, which actually seemed to turn on more ladies than it repulsed. Thoe women may like to have the metrosexual guys take them out to dinner, but something deep in their programming tells them that the guy who can fix a truck, build a house and shoot, skin and cook a moose is a better choice for passing on their genes in the long run. When you can splice fiber hanging upside down, with a hangover better than anyone else within 100 miles can do it on a bench you can pretty much tell everyone to kiss your grits :—) Also was Jewish but had a Nazi battle flag as decoration in his pad... loved hanging with the dude.
Shoot, I might have to look one up right in Gainesville.
I thought that such a place might be so bigoted it wouldn’t want me... but I take my chances. If they don’t have a really wild hair like KJV onlyism (though that version does helpfully reflect an older mindset, so we could do a lot worse than have it as a pew bible) then I might just keep going there. Till I don’t have to anymore.
Present them with some sweet tea and prove to them that the south can actually do something right.
I would adopt Proverbs 3:5-6 as your Scripture theme for such a time as this:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths
CT is a shall issue state. There are some who chose to carry here.
LimeRock Park in Lakeville CT will make your redneck self feel right at home.
Here take a lap...
