Why You Should Keep Backyard Chickens
The Federalist ^ | April 6, 2016 | Daniel Payne

Many urban homeowners increasingly desire to keep small flocks of chickens in their backyards, and with good cause. There is no reason every family in this country that can run a flock of chickens in their backyard should not. This perfectly logical and reasonable habit—backyard chicken farming—has been buried under a great deal of hipster elitism (from many of the backyard chicken farmers themselves) and sneering derision (from their critics). Please try to ignore these detractors. If you can play host to backyard chickens, you should.

It is, in many urban localities, easier said than done. This normal and praiseworthy practice, which has been gaining ground in many cities across the country, has come under fire from both pearl-clutching busybodies and incompetent health inspectors and animal welfare agents, all of whom are under the impression that backyard chicken farming is both frightening and dangerous....

Basically yes. It is elevated off the ground an inch or so for ventilation/airing and bedded with straw inside and straw baled outside so they can rearrange as they wish. “Wild” ducks will lay anywhere that offers some protection and tend to make use of them. We had a “duck” house growing up that was used by our domesticated Pekins/Muscovies but later was used by wild Mallards as well. Duck eggs are duck eggs. It was next to a stream, so they could quickly escape to the water in case of predators, and we would occasionally dump cracked corn or feed nearby to sweeten the deal.

Mr. GG2 just put the finishing touches on my new gourmet predator proof enclosed chicken coop and hen house yesterday. I am now looking for 5(that’s the limit for our property size) Ameracauna pullets so we will be in business in a couple of weeks.

We used to have Rhode Island Reds when I was a kid but a few years ago I had an Ameracauna hen wander into my yard from who knows where looking like deaths doorstep and I started feeding her unpopped popcorn and scraps. She kept the whole side yard completely weed free and bug free and she roosted in a tree at night next to the deck. Everyday she laid a green egg behind my gas grill. So I’m getting Ameracaunas this go around.

Very interesting, thanks for the info. I’d think for small game, the delivered energy from a few hundred grains travelling at 300 fps would cause massive damage, so probably even a field point or blunt tip would kill quickly.

Funny you should mention that. The first one I took out, I took out with a field point. He turned around as I walked up to him, and kind of gave me this "Now why'd you do that?" nonchalant look, than expired.

Ww are moving fulltime to the mountains soon too. Mr. GG2 made our whole coop in sections that we can just unscrew, put in the truck and take it with us when we go.

Thank you so much for your kind comment re; my bio page.
It took many long hours and hard work to compose it. I’m a real dummy when it come to computers and HTML- but I wanted to give everyone a short history of Texas’ glorious past and dispel the image many have of Texas derived from silly movies and TV. lol:)

Foolish? Not at all! I haven’t actually killed any animal to eat, except for fish.

I just have no moral objection to eating meat. Something is going to eat bunnies and chickens’ even cows and pigs. And little lambs. Might as well be me.

Animals are not humans.

How do you find that out?

Me neither. Fortunately I have Mr. GG2. The hen that stops laying goes in the freezer. :-)

True, but someone else would have to do the killing of the chickens. I just couldn’t.

Sure why not most folks that live in 3rd world countries keep some kind of live stock around. We should too as globalists’ like Cruz reduce us to 3rd world status. I’ll look into it, do chickens and vegetable gardens play nice together?

Children should be kept in the back yard and not
allowed to wander the streets picking up gravel
and eating worms...

>That’s why in elections it’s always a good idea to know the History of the candidate you’re choosing.....what his record is...who he’s supported....what he’s done and or stopped from being done BEFORE the race is on.

I find that you learn more about people during hard times than easy times. And during this very hard primary Ted Cruz has openly stolen votes, given aid and comfort to BLM’s rioters in Chicago, attacked Trump first after a ISIS attack in Belgium, stated the following:

“In the wake of Trump’s endorsement this week by retired Ku Klux Klan Grand wizard David Duke, Cruz suggested on “Fox News Sunday” that a hate group supporting Trump was making recorded calls – known as “robo-calls” — telling potential voters not to pick a Cuban candidate. Cruz and Rubio are both of Cuban descent. “

But it turned out that a Rubio PAC made those calls: http://beforeitsnews.com/opinion-conservative/2016/03/marco-rubio-super-pac-busted-on-nazi-kkk-nasty-robo-calls-in-support-of-trump-3109602.html
Did Cruz ever apologize for those comments? He’s neither a leader nor man worth following.

Interesting post!

Chickens, believe it or not can be very endearing.
As a child, I had a pet hen name Henrietta.
She loved to be petted, and always ran to meet me when she saw me coming.
I loved to hear her sing. Have you ever heard hen sing?

I worded that wrong.
The chickens were fine.
The people who were feeding the chickens quit after less than 2 years.
Chickens can be nasty.

I had neighbors that would not keep their chickens home, they kept eating my strawberry plants and leaving a mess, we went to neighbor war over it. Then an ornery boy came to visit us for a couple of weeks...he got the stray chickens with his slingshot. I did not know he was doing it until it was too late for the chickens, though I was glad to be rid of them. Over the years I have had enough ornery boys visit that I have a desk drawer full of confiscated sling shots.

I have had chickens and if cared for properly they are not that messy, contain the chickens somewhat then smaller area to clean. With strays you can’t do that so they are really messy and annoying. People really should keep all their critters home and cared for but some don’t get that.
