...The article alleges a truly horrifying gang rape at a UVA fraternity, and it has understandably shocked the campus and everyone whos read it. The consequences have been pretty much instantaneous: The fraternity involved has voluntarily suspended its operations (without admitting that the incident happened); UVAs president is promising an investigation and has since suspended all fraternity charters on campus; the alumni are in an uproar; the governor of Virginia has spoken out; students, particularly female students, are furious, and the concept of rape culture is further established. Federal intervention is sure to follow.
The only thing is Im not sure that I believe it. Im not convinced that this gang rape actually happened. Something about this story doesnt feel right.
Heres why.

I believe it’s disallowed to use “true” and “rolling stone(d)” in the same sentence.
Boy this is a needed critique.
I am almost certain it is true.
It’s also not the first time such an attack has occurred at that fraternity house.

_____________
There is no question that there have been rapes at frat houses. The question is whether this particular story is true. It has many holes. It doesn’t stand up to the bull test.
This is a great question.
Remember: One must be most critical about stories that play into existing biases.
Indeed.
We should all remember this on FR, as we peruse articles published in the notoriously not honest Big Media.
Just waiting for all the Animal House references. They’re coming...
I was referring to that specific frat house.
This account reads like a cheap dirty novel, and indeed has many of the tropes of a rape fantasy.
But aside from that, there are numerous inconsistencies within the story - e.g. rush is in the spring, not the fall, no member of the fraternity was ever a lifeguard, woman raped for 3 hours by 9 men on a floor covered with shards of glass and she (and they) don't require medical attention, she is left alone and neither threatened nor prevented from gathering evidence or calling the police on her cell phone, she is able to identify 2 of her attackers in a pitch dark room, and not one but 3 friends keep her from going to the hospital because they might not be invited back to the fraternity?
And the accuser apparently had a strong motivation to concoct a story - several posters report she was about to flunk out of school. Reminiscent of Crystal Mangum avoiding involuntary commitment by spinning her Duke Lacrosse tale. And the University has been trying to get rid of fraternities for some time, and this tale surfaces just as the Obama administration is launching an anti-rape campaign?
So, no, in the absence of any corroborating evidence (or immediate outcry), a certain skepticism is warranted here.
Yes, I did read the article.
By the way, who claimed that “Drew” was working as a lifeguard? The girl claims to have met “Drew” while SHE was working as a lifeguard.
“...several posters report she was about to flunk out of school...”. Would that be “several posters” who are trying to debunk her story? Do you have their names?
Doesn’t pass the smell test.
After three hours of being pounded while lying on top of broken glass, she would be seriously injured, and quite possibly bleeding out. Less severe, I guess, if it was safety glass.
But she should still have dozens of scars today.
Never having been a frat, I can’t speak to their actual rituals, but this sounds like somebody’s fantasy of a fraternity ritual, not an actual victim of one.
BTW, if this happened, I’m fine with executing the participants. If they need somebody, I’ll cheerfully push the button. So it’s not like I’m an apologist for rapists.
Depending on the room furnishings, there may very well still be corroborating blood evidence around. Remarkably difficult to get rid of completely.
I would not deny that is the case. The story still does not pass the sniff test.
Nobody has any names in this. Which is why it is inherently unbelievable.
"She and Drew had met while working lifeguard shifts together at the university pool . . . "
