Nearly 200 airline cabin cleaners walked off the job at a New York City airport overnight, striking over health and safety issues that include fears over possible exposure to Ebola.
The protest involves Air Serv cabin cleaners in Terminal D at New Yorks LaGuardia airport, a contractor that serves Delta, as well as supporting workers from LaGuardia and JFK International airports.
Protesting workers carried signs and chanted during todays rally, protesting against conditions that they say often find them encountering hypodermic needles, vomit and blood.
Meanwhile, the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ was scheduled to conduct infectious disease training today for airport cabin cleaners, terminal cleaners and wheelchair attendants.
"The training will cover current guidance from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA)," the union said in a release. "This includes guidelines for cleaning airplane cabins and lavatories, for cleaning an area with possible Ebola exposure, and for determining which equipment employers are required to supply."
The union added, "Amid rising fears of the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, the training will help workers better identify infectious disease hazards and protect against exposure and spread."
Such a response comes as additional screening is scheduled to begin at JFK and four other main U.S. airports, a means of trying to catch any travelers from Ebola-ravaged countries who may be carrying the disease.

RE: They should strike, Im sure theyre not cleaning planes in hazmat suits!
That aside, La Guardia is on of the WORST airports in the United States I’ve had the displeasure of flying to and from.
One would expect a world class city like NYC to have at least a world class airport, but this one is totally the pits.
Where are all the taxes going to?
We are already buying gloves, P100 masks, and bleach wipes for the flight.
TSA doesn’t allow those things on flights.
Just kidding. Have a safe flight.
I agree. This admin thinks a mere 150 folks coming here each day from Ebola countries is nothing. This Gov idiot stated on Fox that each one only comes in contact with 100 others like that is no big deal. I was thinking what an idiot-does he even know how many that is in a year? Any sane admin would limit travel to essential personnel only.
I've just returned to Pocatello after spending 5 years living in a rented room in San Diego to keep my six figure job. My landlord's family wanted to sell the house after the oldest brother passed in January. The sign went up on the house this morning. Concurrent with losing my room, my boss decided that I'm "too expensive" even though I work 40 to 70 hours weekly for 40 hours pay. So be it. My wife wanted me to come home and I could see the Ebola mess brewing. I'm going to rearrange my work so that it is all "work from home". I've done it before. Now it makes even more sense.
When I returned home 3 weeks ago, I did a quick tally of the out of pocket cost to keep that job. It worked out to be nearly $96,000 over 5 years. That includes rent, utilities, food, commuting expenses and special insurance for my motorcycle to be garaged away from my home. I was still paying for both of my homes in Pocatello. The $96k was on top of what I would have paid to do the same work from my home office. I didn't include the extra cost of cell phone minutes and cellular data plans that easily adds another $200/month. I've hacked those items away upon return to my home.
I cannot blame them...
Why is this lunatic of a pResident again trying to stop it over here?
Stop it before it is over HERE.... Testing once the virus gets over here does not good.
Stop it over there.
I don’t blame them a bit!
The Dallas deputy probably stepped in the infectious puke just outside the apartment.
How many other people did.
The aircrews will eventually shut down the flights. W. Africa is not a popular destination for air crew anyway,,so why also risk your life? The French airlines had this problem almost immediately and their flights have been stopped.
Me either. They are not being protected when they clean the cabins.
They will wait until we get our share of Ebola victims in this country. Redistribute the wealth, redistribute the diseases.
Because LaGuardia is a major entry point into the US.
Well, from Canada anyway.
I hope the Marines tell this administration where to go also.
You'd be bitching even more if the cabins were not disinfected adequately.
I don't blame them if adequate protective measures have not been taken: training, gear, and manpower. It takes time and money to get the bugs out. If the airlines don't want to commit to that they don't have to fly to Liberia.
There are other ways to institute a travel ban, liability being one of them.
Can’t say I blame them, I wouldn’t want to clean up the crap left behind by Ebola infested people..I don’t think anyone would want that job..hey I have an idea, since liberals love Ebola so much, have THEM clean it up..or just send the waste to MSNBC
RE: I hope the Marines tell this administration where to go also.
All 194,000 active duty marines have to speak as one in order for this to happen. Just the 100 or so sent to West Africa doing this won;t work. It will only open them up for court martial.
Wait until all the nurses walk off the job when flu and norovirus season starts.
Here are some other questions that arise:
1) What if this cabin crew strike catches on in the other airports?
2) Ever consider that ANIMALS can also contract ebola? What if a few of them in the USA ( racoons, squirrels, deer, etc. ) come in contact with one of the ebola victim’s puke or waste or urine?
The question is: Can you TRUST the Government to tell you the TRUTH?
Gee.. let me think about that one! /s
I guess it’s possible to catch Ebola when you go to vote...especially in the Dallas area.
There is probably another vector mechanism besides physical contact with the victim. We have to see how the ambulance crew fares. At least their protocol is to wear gloves and practice immediate decontamination and sanitation after contact with any victims. That has been the HIV protocol for a long time.
