VILLA PARK, Ill. — Comparing their campaign to the civil rights movement, fast food workers from across the country voted today to escalate their efforts for $15-an-hour pay and union membership to include nonviolent civil disobedience.

More than 1,300 workers gathered in a convention in center in suburban Chicago to discuss the future of a campaign that has spread to dozens of cities in less than two years. Wearing T-shirts that said “Fight for $15” and “We Are Worth More,” the workers cheered loudly and said they would win if they stuck together.

“People are just fed up,” said Cindy Enriquez, 20, of Phoenix....

Well Cindy, start putting up drywall 10 hours a day instead of putting burgers and fries in a bag and I am sure you will get what you ask and more.

but of course you realize its not the fast food workers themselves who are actually doing the organizing and writing the slogans.

I suspect in 10 yrs the typical fast food place will have 2 employees per shift, basically to do logistics and sanitation.

That might be enough to get my business back.

Perhaps a union could front them some of their money so they could open up their own burger joint, dominate the marketplace, and distribute the profits directly to the workers (and payback the union for the loan) Would they unionize?

Back in the 80s there was a well written snarky fictional essay called “GM Burgers” where the UAW organized McDonalds and the company went out of business in a couple years.

One of the actual problems unions face is that most name brand fast foods are actually fairly small franchise operations. So the effort to organize each one is pretty huge relative to the number of employees of each franchise owner.

It ain’t so much the fast food workers pushing this as it is the unions. Why are the unions pushing it? Because union wages are a multiple of minimum wage

Roger that. I see a mix in Reno. Lots of folks talkin’ espan’yall. Of course the fast food places all have “E-Verify” posters on the wall in English and Spanish. But then again I guess it’s like CarFax. If it ain’t reported, it don’t show up.

Squirting ketchup on a McBurger and salting fries aren’t exactly jobs requiring a high level of technical skill. Half of them ought to maybe try graduating high school first before they demand a ‘living wage’.

Roger that. My wife worked a bunch of fast food jobs and TG&Y and K-mart so she could pay her way through college. Of course I don’t think you could pay your way doing that today but then again, who said you MUST finish in 4 years? Our oldest is 48 and just now working on her doctorate degree. Nibble away a little at a time and during the process learn a little about life along the way.

If all the work you can get is at fast food joints for minimum wage, then that is all you are worth.

In the Bush era of prosperity, fast food was derided by Pelosi as “McJobs”.

Now in the ongoing Baraqqi Depression, they are viewed as career occupations.

They'll only quicken the markets transformation to the inevitable. Most fast food workers will be replaced by automated processes.

The technicians that stock and service the machines will likely make better money.

Actually, I went to eat at a chain restaurant this week.

There was a touch screen device on the table that you placed your own order on and paid your bill.

Yeah..the server brought your food. But even he said...I don’t care about the tip. Just answer the questionnaire at the end and rate me well.

These folks demanding $15 per hour...it will bite them in the nether regions.
