In the End Neither Michelle O nor Batik Could Save the Ladies Home Journal

Can you believe it? Another venerable American institution is about to go the way of the buggy whip. No, not the Bill of Rights – not yet anyway. It’s the the Ladies Home Journal, which is folding after a 131 year run.

There is no way you can blame Lady M for the demise: she did the best she could, gracing its cover 3 times in just 5 years.

And in issues that included such cutting edge features as “cleavage etiquette” -

“Anti-aging for ‘real’ women” -

lhjLHJ recommends Photoshop as the most cost effective method

And “the real secret to long-term weight loss” -

Again, LHJ recommends Photoshop – the results are not permanent butt then, they are immediate:

Meanwhile, BO is still in the Far East, addressing critical foreign relations issues such as cigarette sales and the missing airliner.

He also showed off some Bahasa Malaysia he picked up while living with Mom in Indonesia. Which gave him a chance to honor Stanley Ann’s legacy as well:

"For my mother, batik wasn't about fashion. ... It was a window into the lives of others — their cultures, lives and tradition," the president said.

Barack-Obama-and-his-mother-Ann-DunhamBO and Mom both in native batik, (ditto the bed). Oddly, their hair seems to be leaning left.

“My mother believed and I believe that whether we come from a remote village or a big city, whether we live in the U.S. or Malaysia, we all share basic human aspirations: to live in dignity and in peace, to shape our own destiny, to be able to make a living and work hard and support a family,” he said.

Oddly enough, it would seem that Big Guy does not share Mom’s appreciation for the Indonesian fabric:

bo batikBO, working hard (in batik) to make a living.

Royal-Castle-Child-Development-CenteMO, working hard (in batik) to make a living.

So, Bo’s heading home soon, and since Lady M didn’t get to accompany him he has to bring her a really special present. He didn’t think that another batik sundress for our annual 4th of July celebration would cut it, as Lady M made it clear that Stanley Ann was correct: batik isn’t about fashion.

So he got her something really special: oriental batik eyelashes. I think she’ll love them.

Did they put Barbara and Laura Bush on their cover as many times?

Yes, just her image on the cover and articles about her and zero were their down fall!

Oprah lost her show, too. boo-hoo. Des Moines didn’t need this hit, though.

Every issue had articles on how to lose weight. Guess they didn’t work very well.

Meredith Corp. publishes LHJ. It is a very weird company. That whole operation is likely to fold. They publish a whole bunch of similar fluff magazines. I’d be surprised if all of them hadn’t hyped Moose-hell in the last few years. Look for Hillary to be hyped as they go down the tubes.

Yeah, magazines can't keep their base when they don't give them information they go to for. What does Michelle in the WH have to do with women who want information about maintaining homes, families and personal interests of normal women whose lives center around their homes, families, and community interactions?

Don't know. Did find "Its first photographed cover appeared in 1898, with a picture of first lady Ida McKinley."

Obviously, no correlation between covers of FOTUS, and deaths of POTUS...

I would postulate that more than one cover of FOTUS Muchelle per term helped hasten the slide more than whatever benefits sycophantian purchases did to forestall it.

My first wife worked for a subsidiary in Des Moines. They paid half-way decently but were practically slave-drivers and expected you to put the job first, before all other things.

The most logical conclusion.

Laura was on at least twice. Barbara was on a couple times too. Hillary’s been on, but she’s not really LHJ material.

Being Iowa-based, LHJ isn’t quite the kook-left operation that it would be on the coasts, but it is weird.

Exactly. A lot of not-very-nice people run it, regardless of politics.

Oh, they’re Tom Harkin left-wing Democrats. Don’t kid yourself.

Nice. Let the thing die. Frankly, the presence of MO probably helped hasten the demise, and the editorial board and publisher didn’t even know it.

I used to read all the women’s magazines until I noticed ever increasing liberalism, and dropped them all.

LHJ has always featured first ladies. Problem for them really is they’re an artifact from a bygone era. It’s always been housewife monthly, and there just aren’t many housewives anymore.

I’ll point this out....LHJ had 3.2 million subscriptions. You can figure at least $12 a year (monthly edition). So, they were making $3.2 million....plus advertising profits (figure one million in that department). And they couldn’t sustain a profit with $4 million pouring in monthly? How and why?

Then you look at the location....New York City. You look at editors and various journalists. I’ll bet at least twenty-five people pulling in $125k in pay and benefits yearly. Toss in another thirty people who did graphic design, photos and pulling $75k a year in pay and benefits. They were burning through forty-eight million a year with all the costs involved.

So, only a suggestion. LHJ should have packed up a decade ago and moved to Charleston, SC or Knoxville, TN. They could have cut salary structure by fifty percent.

Yep.

Though Iowa-based, editorial offices are in Manhattan, guaranteeing no knowledge of their customer base, just for a start. Then add in the fact that people in publishing in Manhattan having nothing but contempt for folks in flyover land. Fail!

I’d say you should double those salary and benefits totals. Your numbers would reflect Des Moines, not Manhattan.

Makes me wonder if it isn’t just some kind of money-laundering.

Mooch’s before and afters are telling. I’d love to know how much her transformation has cost (us). Surgeons, trainers, dietitians, aestheticians, stylists . . .
