Can we please keep comments about the Mormon faith off the political discussion threads?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 05/24/2011 4:07:08 PM PDT by ken5050

As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others here feel the same way.

I'm not Jesus, so I don't get a vote. You can become a god, so you do? Syncro, with the gloves off.

...let's assume that I concur with your thesis. However, is it necessary for EVERY political thread to raise the same points, the same issues, the same theological discussion. Every thread becomes an endless "cut and paste" job. And what does that bring to the table? IMHO, nothing..just surf through this thread, and 90% of the commentary has been posted before, hundreds of times.

Let me keep this one short:

Granted, some commentary gets repeated. Some of it is quite repetitive. Now if you object to the same exact commercials being hurled at you daily, have you...
...complained to the company or TV or radio station?
...stopped buying those products so advertised?
...No? So what you "put up with" on daily media you won't tolerate on FR?
And unlike some programming where you can't fast-forward thru commercials, you can usually scroll past obvious canned content.

Companies want both saturation and coverage. Saturation for the same viewer/listener to get the same repetition; coverage 'cause they know some programs get distinct viewers/listeners. Likewise, posters know a certain % of their posters -- plus many lurkers -- haven't seen previous points raised.

My key objection to you here is classifying this as "every political thread".

C'mon, Ken, that's overexaggeration. A straw man.

Do you really want me to spend an hour+ going to thru just the Spring Romney FR threads to link for you the hundreds of Romney threads that did not embody any theological discussions, let alone the same ones?

Posters tend to skim through a lot of threads & they think they've got a decent handle on what's been posted. It's not until you put "Romney" in a title keyword search that you see how often his threads have come up! And they are legion!

May I encourage you to back off the "every political thread" hyperbole?

I'm not even going to try to make sense of your mush for lurkers, if any are even left here.

God can do anything right? Even answer the prayer of a Mormon if the fate of the nation is on the line...

IMHO, it's more important that the POTUS have a faith and believe that he will be judged for lying if he does so than that he be of my religious Sect.

IMHO, it is hypocritical of the Freepers here to say Mormons can't hold the presidency, then ask us to vote for their evangelical candidate...

I wish more of the DOC had walked away from a later prophet named Jim Jones, but they didn't. They were immersed in Liberalism.

Unfortunately, the DOC has become one of the most liberal of religions. The other two branches of the COC remain quite conservative.

I have been told the Mormons who were being Massacred by the precursors to FR's anti Mormons

I have seen that the site owner doesn't take kindly to attacks on FReepers like the one you just made.

You didnt vote for him in 2008

Nobody expected you to then

he wasnt a mormon

in 2012 our nominee again will not be a mormon

I dont expect mormons to go against their religious doctrines and vote fot a w2omen or a black man

(BTW you never did say if you would vote for a woman for POTUS

you just gave me some feeble mumblings about a woman as the VP

I didnt say YP sweetie

as a Christian I believe women are equal with men

The LORD Jesus Christ shed His blood on the Cross at Calvary and died on the Cross to save women and men and both get to go to Heaven without any need for a spouse to call anyone out of the grave or such sexist bigotted ninsense)

Ken, understand that this "I give up" result is the goal of the scorched earth anti's here. They will say anything to make the controversy distasteful, uncomfortable, and downright unpleasant. They will continue to post just so they can stand atop the mushy remains of an over beaten horse and declare a Pyhrric victory.

The problem with "Pyrrhic victories" is King Pyrrhus lost because of his "Pyrrhic victories".

The anti-Mormons here believe that the cause of anti-Mormonism is more important than the cause of conservatism and don't mind making the site less popular than it would otherwise be.

IMHO, from a business stand point JR should send them all packing.

Just want to let you know that a lot of us support what you’re saying. As far as I’m concerned (and I think as far as most mainstream religious scholarship is concerned), Mormanism is a form of Christianity. But it really doesn’t matter how we label it. Mormans are good people who do good work in this world. I’m not a Morman, but I have many friends who are. Of course I’d vote for a Morman presidential candidate, as long as I saw him/her as the better candidate.

mormons are 2% of the population and only half of them wil be eligible to vote

half of them may be Democrats...Romney told us so

so that5s .5% of the population who wont be voting for the non-mormon

News flash - not all books are on the internet. Further news flash, not everything on the internet is valid.

IMHO, Your posts make that last part very clear.

That accounts for all your bruises du. Ever figure out when the nephite exhibit opens at the Smithsonian?

It's right next to the exhibit showing Jesus' resurrection...

And it appears now that we are on the same path whenever Romney's name arises.

I have a REALLY hard time believing that you have not seen Jim Robinson's many posts regarding Romney and that fact that references to him are not welcome on FR and there will be no campaigning for him here.

IMHO, it is hypocritical of the Freepers here to say Mormons can't hold the presidency, then ask us to vote for their evangelical candidate...

#1...Let's break down the #s on this, shall we?

Mormons are 2% of the population. Of the GOP base, they are probably about 1.5% of that base -- given that for every Mormon Democrat, there's probably 3 Mormon Republicans. With me, so far?

Secondly, for better or worse, 9 to 9.5 of every 10 Mormon voters will vote for a Mormon candidate over a non-Mormon candidate. That is simply Western states' reality...might not be true of Mormons all over the U.S., but it's been shown to be true in places like Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and AZ. (And since the majority of Mormon voters live in those Western states, we'll take that as "representative" for now).

So, let's say you're an Evangelical candidate and you're "gunning" for that up to 10% of Mormons who would actually escape identity politics and consider voting for you.

Then take into consideration that you need to divide that 1-in-10 Lds vote with X number of other non-Lds candidates. By then, you might begin to realize that what you're really shooting for is 2-3% of the Mormon vote. From a base that overall is only 1.5%.

Tell us Delph: How much $, time, energy, limited campaign resources, commercials, etc. do you think non-Lds candidates are going to exert/spend just so they can capture 2-3% of the vote -- probably 4-5% at extreme best -- from a base that only comprises 1.5% ???

At even 5%, do you realize that is only 1/20th of 1.5%??? That's .3% of your base, Delf!!! And I overestimated it; it's probably less than .2%!!!

Sorry to crunch the numbers for you, but you needed a reality check quite badly. Mormon voters, like some elitist self-centered young single lady who thinks quite highly of herself, has trained all potential suitors to not even bother pursuing her.

When Mormon voters decide to bypass identity politics, if ever, you be sure to raise that question again then, ya here now?
