When Atheists Attack (Each Other)
Evolution News and Views ^ | April 28 2011 | Davld Klinghoffer

Posted on 05/01/2011 7:24:18 AM PDT by Ethan Clive Osgoode

The squabble between Darwin lobbyists who openly hate religion and those who only quietly disdain it grows ever more personal, bitter and pathetic. On one side, evangelizing New or "Gnu" (ha ha) Atheists like Jerry Coyne and his acolytes at Why Evolution Is True. Dr. Coyne is a biologist who teaches and ostensibly researches at the University of Chicago but has a heck of a lot of free time on his hands for blogging and posting pictures of cute cats.

On the other side, so-called accommodationists like the crowd at the National Center for Science Education, who attack the New Atheists for the political offense of being rude to religious believers and supposedly messing up the alliance between religious and irreligious Darwinists.

I say "supposedly" because there's no evidence any substantial body of opinion is actually being changed on religion or evolution by anything the open haters or the quiet disdainers say. Everyone seems to seriously think they're either going to defeat religion, or merely "creationism," or both by blogging for an audience of fellow Darwinists.

Want to see what I mean? This is all pretty strictly a battle of stinkbugs in a bottle. Try to follow it without getting a headache.

Coyne recently drew excited applause from fellow biologist-atheist-blogger PZ Myers for Coyne's "open letter" (published on his blog) to the NCSE and its British equivalent, the British Centre for Science Education. In the letter, Coyne took umbrage at criticism of the New Atheists, mostly on blogs, emanating from the two accommodationist organizations. He vowed that,

We will continue to answer the misguided attacks [on the New Atheists] by people like Josh Rosenau, Roger Stanyard, and Nick Matzke so long as they keep mounting those attacks.
Like the NCSE, the BCSE seeks to pump up Darwin in the public mind without scaring religious people. This guy called Stanyard at the BCSE complains of losing a night's sleep over the nastiness of the rhetoric on Coyne's blog. Coyne in turn complained that Stanyard complained that a blog commenter complained that Nick Matzke, formerly of the NCSE, is like "vermin." Coyne also hit out at blogger Jason Rosenhouse for an "epic"-length blog post complaining of New Atheist "incivility." In the blog, Rosenhouse, who teaches math at James Madison University, wrote an update about how he had revised an insulting comment about the NCSE's Josh Rosenau that he, Rosenhouse, made in a previous version of the post.

That last bit briefly confused me. In occasionally skimming the writings of Jason Rosenhouse and Josh Rosenau in the past, I realized now I had been assuming they were the same person. They are not!

It goes on and on. In the course of his own blog post, Professor Coyne disavowed name-calling and berated Stanyard (remember him? The British guy) for "glomming onto" the Matzke-vermin insult like "white on rice, or Kwok on a Leica." What's a Kwok? Not a what but a who -- John Kwok, presumably a pseudonym, one of the most tirelessly obsessive commenters on Darwinist blog sites. Besides lashing at intelligent design, he often writes of his interest in photographic gear such as a camera by Leica. I have the impression that Kwok irritates even fellow Darwinists.

There's no need to keep all the names straight in your head. I certainly can't. I'm only taking your time, recounting just a small part of one confused exchange, to illustrate the culture of these Darwinists who write so impassionedly about religion, whether for abolishing it or befriending it. Writes Coyne in reply to Stanyard,

I'd suggest, then, that you lay off telling us what to do until you've read about our goals. The fact is that we'll always be fighting creationism until religion goes away, and when it does the fight will be over, as it is in Scandinavia.
A skeptic might suggest that turning America into Scandinavia, as far as religion goes, is an outsized goal, more like a delusion, for this group as they sit hunched over their computers shooting intemperate comments back and forth at each other all day. Or in poor Stanyard's case, all night.

There's a feverish, terrarium-like and oxygen-starved quality to this world of online Darwinists and atheists. It could only be sustained by the isolation of the Internet. They don't seem to realize that the public accepts Darwinism to the extent it does -- which is not much -- primarily because of what William James would call the sheer, simple "prestige" that the opinion grants. Arguments and evidence have little to do with it.

The prestige of Darwinism is not going to be affected by how the battle between Jerry Coyne and the NCSE turns out. New Atheist arguments are hobbled by the same isolation from what people think and feel. I have not yet read anything by any of these gentlemen or ladies, whether the open haters or the quiet disdainers, that conveys anything like a real comprehension of religious feeling or thought.

Even as they fight over the most effective way to relate to "religion," the open atheists and the accomodationists speak of an abstraction, a cartoon, that no actual religious person would recognize. No one is going to be persuaded if he doesn't already wish to be persuaded for other personal reasons. No faith is under threat from the likes of Jerry Coyne.

When you start saying that weeks means weeks of seven years “the seventy “weeks” of Daniel referred to as weeks of seven years and was speaking of seventy sevens or 490 years.” and flood is “figurative language”. Then I know that you aren’t taking the Bible literally and once you start taking the Bible metaphorically, it can mean anything to you that your little heart desires. Read my first paragraph again.

Nice try. Look up the verse in a concordance and you will see that the Hebrew word used means a period of seven (days or years). Jacob worked for Rachel for seven years and it is spoken of as him fulfilling her "week". The same with using a word like "flood" to describe something sudden or as an overflowing army as in Daniel 11:22. Serious students of the Bible understand such things as ancient languages and how they are translated into other languages. Even the modern English language uses figurative phrases and words. "Dumb as a box of rocks", comes to mind. :o)

Atheists/agnostics are godless liberals.

A Conservative God Family Country site is not their home. They are like the Jihad’s on 9/11 - invade to do their dirty deeds to kill/rob/destroy. Filth up FR with their godless liberal mindset.

By the way - when you call the Bible the "Word" of God, you're calling the Bible Jesus Christ. How stupid is that? The Bible is not Jesus Christ.

What an a*hole comment that is - but on par with any believer of the doctrines of demons.

I'd explain it to you but a man without the Spirit is UNABLE to 'get it'. Imagine that - your church creates idiots deliberately. Not expecting a believer in doctrines of demons to

Someone who is determined to learn the hard way when he has no option of using that ‘too late’ knowledge is someone who has a depraved mind.

Someone who thinks ‘30’, ‘50’, ‘90’ or ‘110’ years outweighs eternity in importance has ‘0’ intelligence. Too dumb even for the Darwin award.

Yeah, I hate evil as evil/satan is an anti-Christ spirit and has come against HIS WORD since the beginning and he uses his godless minions to carry on his task.

Stop you whining and looking to be embraced - you godless liberal troll!

Who proved that Matchett-PI is a liar? Did you??? Give me a cite!

Matchett-PI isn't a liar, Godzilla is the liar. I sincerely apologize if I gave the impression that Matchett-PI was a liar. I just re posted the list that Godzilla had been posting to, because I didn't want the discussion to appear totally one sided in the liars favor and Matchett_PI was on that list.

Plus to me, religion is not about fear, especially fear of my own death. To me, religion points me to the Source of life more abundantly — not just in the hereafter, but in the actual here and now. It points me to a way of living and thinking about the world that makes total sense to me, that integrates my living experience and knowledge into a unified order under God.

Who made all things, on earth as in heaven, in and for Love....

Indeed.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. - I John 4:18

Thank you so much for your testimony and insights, dearest sister in Christ!

He’s not really interested in the truth. There’s plenty out there for him to read.

He’s just looking for excuses to justify his atheism.

And atheist might just as well admit that he’s rejecting the idea of God because he doesn’t like it, as go through the convoluted mental gymnastics they do to try to convince others there’s an intelligent or rational reason for their decision. It’s blatantly obvious that it’s all just a smoke screen and they are convincing no one that they have anything of value to bring to the table.

At least that one would be an honest atheist.

Yeah I know, the Bible doesn't mean what it says. I just wish the translators could decide on what a day means, or a generation, or a lineage, or a city, or a prophecy, or a commandment, etc. etc. etc. In fact I just wish the translators could agree on any single thing in the Bible. That would be a miracle.

What are you blabbering about? Despator and Allah are good drinking buddies of mine and have my back, so when it comes time to go through those pearly gates, I can just point my finger up and go on : )

Seriously, why is the truth so hard for you to face?

You "wish"??? Somehow, I just do not quite believe you really mean that. The Bible means what it says and says what it means. All it takes is faith - a virtue much too lacking in those who automatically deny what they cannot observe with their eyes, ears, etc.

No need to post the question you are pondering. Unless you are looking for help.

So I'll impart some wisdom, you first need to want the truth before you can face it.

Now go back and continue talking to yourself.... ‘30’, ‘50’, ‘90’ or ‘110’ years vs eternity hmmmmm
