When Atheists Attack (Each Other)
Evolution News and Views ^ | April 28 2011 | Davld Klinghoffer

Posted on 05/01/2011 7:24:18 AM PDT by Ethan Clive Osgoode

The squabble between Darwin lobbyists who openly hate religion and those who only quietly disdain it grows ever more personal, bitter and pathetic. On one side, evangelizing New or "Gnu" (ha ha) Atheists like Jerry Coyne and his acolytes at Why Evolution Is True. Dr. Coyne is a biologist who teaches and ostensibly researches at the University of Chicago but has a heck of a lot of free time on his hands for blogging and posting pictures of cute cats.

On the other side, so-called accommodationists like the crowd at the National Center for Science Education, who attack the New Atheists for the political offense of being rude to religious believers and supposedly messing up the alliance between religious and irreligious Darwinists.

I say "supposedly" because there's no evidence any substantial body of opinion is actually being changed on religion or evolution by anything the open haters or the quiet disdainers say. Everyone seems to seriously think they're either going to defeat religion, or merely "creationism," or both by blogging for an audience of fellow Darwinists.

Want to see what I mean? This is all pretty strictly a battle of stinkbugs in a bottle. Try to follow it without getting a headache.

Coyne recently drew excited applause from fellow biologist-atheist-blogger PZ Myers for Coyne's "open letter" (published on his blog) to the NCSE and its British equivalent, the British Centre for Science Education. In the letter, Coyne took umbrage at criticism of the New Atheists, mostly on blogs, emanating from the two accommodationist organizations. He vowed that,

We will continue to answer the misguided attacks [on the New Atheists] by people like Josh Rosenau, Roger Stanyard, and Nick Matzke so long as they keep mounting those attacks.
Like the NCSE, the BCSE seeks to pump up Darwin in the public mind without scaring religious people. This guy called Stanyard at the BCSE complains of losing a night's sleep over the nastiness of the rhetoric on Coyne's blog. Coyne in turn complained that Stanyard complained that a blog commenter complained that Nick Matzke, formerly of the NCSE, is like "vermin." Coyne also hit out at blogger Jason Rosenhouse for an "epic"-length blog post complaining of New Atheist "incivility." In the blog, Rosenhouse, who teaches math at James Madison University, wrote an update about how he had revised an insulting comment about the NCSE's Josh Rosenau that he, Rosenhouse, made in a previous version of the post.

That last bit briefly confused me. In occasionally skimming the writings of Jason Rosenhouse and Josh Rosenau in the past, I realized now I had been assuming they were the same person. They are not!

It goes on and on. In the course of his own blog post, Professor Coyne disavowed name-calling and berated Stanyard (remember him? The British guy) for "glomming onto" the Matzke-vermin insult like "white on rice, or Kwok on a Leica." What's a Kwok? Not a what but a who -- John Kwok, presumably a pseudonym, one of the most tirelessly obsessive commenters on Darwinist blog sites. Besides lashing at intelligent design, he often writes of his interest in photographic gear such as a camera by Leica. I have the impression that Kwok irritates even fellow Darwinists.

There's no need to keep all the names straight in your head. I certainly can't. I'm only taking your time, recounting just a small part of one confused exchange, to illustrate the culture of these Darwinists who write so impassionedly about religion, whether for abolishing it or befriending it. Writes Coyne in reply to Stanyard,

I'd suggest, then, that you lay off telling us what to do until you've read about our goals. The fact is that we'll always be fighting creationism until religion goes away, and when it does the fight will be over, as it is in Scandinavia.
A skeptic might suggest that turning America into Scandinavia, as far as religion goes, is an outsized goal, more like a delusion, for this group as they sit hunched over their computers shooting intemperate comments back and forth at each other all day. Or in poor Stanyard's case, all night.

There's a feverish, terrarium-like and oxygen-starved quality to this world of online Darwinists and atheists. It could only be sustained by the isolation of the Internet. They don't seem to realize that the public accepts Darwinism to the extent it does -- which is not much -- primarily because of what William James would call the sheer, simple "prestige" that the opinion grants. Arguments and evidence have little to do with it.

The prestige of Darwinism is not going to be affected by how the battle between Jerry Coyne and the NCSE turns out. New Atheist arguments are hobbled by the same isolation from what people think and feel. I have not yet read anything by any of these gentlemen or ladies, whether the open haters or the quiet disdainers, that conveys anything like a real comprehension of religious feeling or thought.

Even as they fight over the most effective way to relate to "religion," the open atheists and the accomodationists speak of an abstraction, a cartoon, that no actual religious person would recognize. No one is going to be persuaded if he doesn't already wish to be persuaded for other personal reasons. No faith is under threat from the likes of Jerry Coyne.

Son; this could be the very basis for you starting your OWN religion!

Yes! The Religion of Truth seekers! What a concept.

Human cloning isn’t a very big leap, in terms of the technicality.

Are we looking at all of this BACKWARD?

It has been said that we ARE a 'soul' and that we HAVE a 'body'.

So, in the continuum between the fellow we saw upscreen,

con-joined twins ,

Eng and Chang ;

and identical twins ;

how many SOULS are involved?

...but it appears the Atheists attack Christians.

Duh!

Which of the OTHER religions are 'true'??

It seems that 'atheism' is GOD's little trick to PROVE that CHRISTIANITY is right!

Since you are a transgender person, I am curious, how many Chromosomes do you have?

This should be simple enough. For you.

Look at the EVIDENCE.

Sex creates life Cronos. The joining of the two DNA strands creates new life. It is actually pretty simple.

Actually, not completely -- the process of DNA joins is a new set of chemical reactions. The DNA is in a living orgnism (the ovum or the sperm), so it is FROM life, it does not CREATE life, but furthers it

A creation of life is if you take an inanimate object and give it life a la Frankenstein.

Anyone can believe in silly Pagan rituals, isn't that the definition of an ignoramus?

Nope. An ignoramus is an ignorant person, from the Latin verb ignorare. A person knowledgeable of pagan rituals or Christian rituals or the rituals of the state is not an "ignoramus"

An ignorant person is lacking knowledge or awareness in general

The Christian view is that everyone is damned unless saved by the Blood of Christ. You are free to believe that if you like

Yes and you are free to disbelieve that if you like. You have the free choice to believe or not, just as I do. Similarly, you have the civil right to believe or not, just as I do.

"..Being nice wasn’t an option; it was the only way for the species to survive...

But there’s a second unspoken lesson here—that the existence of altruism, compassion, generosity, kinship, and compassion can be explained very well by natural selection.

So is it morally incumbent upon the bats to survive?

See 2,543 Attempts such as this to explain or account for morality from an a priori assumption of naturalism commit a fundamental category error. The foregoing, even if it were an accurate account of what has happened in the past, does not constitute or offer any explanation at all of morality because mere descriptive accounts of the past are not prescriptive. Morality entails what ought to be done, not merely what is. As Hume showed, you cannot logically derive an ought from an is.

Cordially,

You could spend the rest of your life trying to disprove all the nonsense some people make up about you and all they’ll accomplish is having you run in circles like a dog chasing its tail, answering an ever increasing list of absurd demands, while they sit back and laugh at you.

And they pretend that they don’t get why you don’t play.

They’re total trolls.

The can accuse all they want, in my book. I know the truth and I know that I’ve stated on the forum where I stand on each of those issues. Anyone who wishes can go back and find the answer to the questions they are asking. It’s in my posting history.

Amen, metmom!

Your inane babble that it didn't matter was enjoyable to expose - once again show us all your superior intellect and show where a male gamete was used as the receptor to the nucleus...
It didn't matter to the argument about the clone's individuality and its "soul" is what I meant

Since you cannot even get the fundamentals of the biology behind cloning james, your credibility beyond that crumbles quickly to the nonsense level.

Replies to every accusation of yours has been addressedobfuscated in my earlier comments. One only needs look at them, to know what my actual arguments were.

There, corrected the record for you james, at no extra charge. Really james, you are so confused on this subject you really need some help. Perhaps a gurka guide, bread crumbs and a gps may help you find your way out.

You're having fun aren't you...

Next best thing to wack-a-mole.

For Atheist the false god is themselves, therefore it is impossible to admit defeat.

Indeed, and the other 'gods' they conjure up are just as fallible.

You inserted ‘clan’ where it didn’t belong and passed it off as factual.

Bethlehem is known as the City of David - and Jesus was a descendant of David.

Epic fail lg, Don’t give up your day job.

In Pnsm's case there's a lot to hide. Wouldn't one be worried if people on FR realised that one was a Wahabbi troll here? The cover would be blown before the plan to get the Isai-worshippers to fight each other is complete

I can say only one thing: when I was a believer I remember homilies that reminded the faithful that God hates sin and loves the sinner, and that the Christian God, Lord and Savior taught his disciples not to hate, but to love their enemies.

Apparently not all "Christians" (or morel likely trolls with an ax to grind, masquerading as Christians) here on FR practice that. The hate they spill on these pages on anyone who dares question their beliefs, or even who happens to be Catholic, just doesn't come across as anything even remotely Christian, so it really doesn't matter what sect or cult they belong to; all one can see in their words is hate. Theirs god must the god of hate and their religion to match. pnsn and metmom, you don't have to say what you believe in. It's obvious.

"Our Founding Fathers went to great lengths to keep GOD out of our politics. They saw first hand the evil that came from combining religion and politics."

"Thankfully, in this enlightened day and age, we have mental giants such as [ LaGrande, James C. Bennett, kosta50] & Bill Maher to explain how "The Founders went to great lengths to keep GOD out of our politics." Just imagine! This is what they were up against: To cite one superstitious -- not to mention, appallingly ethnocentric -- idiot by the name of John Adams, "I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in Providence for the illumination of the ignorant, and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the world."

This arrogant, Jew-loving neo-con tool of the Israel lobby also wrote that "I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations." The Jewish people preserved and propagated "to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme, intelligent, wise, almighty sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be the greatest essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization." /s Amazing. This clown sounds like he could be Sarah Palin's speech writer.

At any rate... you will notice that the left is the Adversary, as they not only devalue and undermine the classical liberal values upon which America was founded, but they also denigrate the West in general. And they obviously hate God and are at war with religion. "

<>

But Bill Maher [et.al] is not a serious man. Well, perhaps seriously bitter. Which is another point. Maher does not have the insight or depth of character to delve into the roots of his own bitterness and anger, which pose insurmountable obstacles to any understanding of the Subject of the subject he pretends to explore in Religulous. Thus, the whole exercise is one of triumphant self-justification and narcissistic exultation. Obviously, if he were truly curious about God, he could have dialogued with serious intellectuals possessing valid gnosis. But if he were to do that, he would look like the unlearned rube that he is. It reminds me of what Bion described as the essence of the psychotic mind...which is organized around the unholy triumvirate of arrogance, curiosity and stupidity.

Let's see what else Adams had to say : )

“The government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian religion”

Is it painful to learn the truth?
