As the economy continues to crumble and as millions of Americans find it nearly impossible to find a good job, many of them have been wondering if things are any better in other parts of the country. And without a doubt, some areas of the U.S. are complete and total disaster zones at this point. For example, so many houses have been abandoned in Detroit that the mayor has proposed bulldozing one-fourth of the city. In Las Vegas, it was estimated that approximately 65 percent of all homes with a mortgage were "underwater" at the height of the housing crash. The number of people unemployed in the state of California is approximately equal to the populations of Nevada, New Hampshire and Vermont combined.

Get your fishing gear, sub-zero clothing and camping equipment, a big boatload of firewood, and set sail for Antarctica.
Find a state where you can grow most of the food you will eat on a few acres, where you can hunt, fish, find firewood, where you can barter, trade your skills for goods and labor, and where governments, federal and local will leave you alone. I’m close to having that in my neck of northern New Mexico. Most of my neighbors have learned to speak English. They are a good group of people who don’t want any trouble, and don’t tolerate it, and the various government agencies and law enforcement tend to stay away. Best of all, I don’t owe a penny on any of it.
>>Leave the California Image at the state line.<<
Done.
And I have spent 2+ years in the DFW metroplex so I know the difference between “y’all” and “all y’all” AND just before I was rolling off my last project there I found myself (seriously) using the term “I’m fixin’ to...”
No state is good to move to in preparation for hard times unless you have a job to go to there or are self sufficient.

And vulnerable to Tsunamis as well . . .
Hypnotic
Michigan...it can’t get much worse so it’s not very far to fall...
No problem, and we'll leave a light on for ya...
Didn't you see Fargo? =)
I've been warning about this plan for a year here on FR. But nobody listened and nobody cares. Just like when I warned about overpriced houses and the housing bubble and the credit crisis (which has now engulfed the world).
All I got for my effort were cat calls and demented shills yelling at me and thousands of hacking attacks . . .
Or Google "S. 510"
This bill would also outlaw vitamins and all food supplements. There two Senate Bills pending. Either Bill would instantly make hundreds of thousands of jobs illegal. Both bills have already been through the House. Just one act of Congress or drunken and power mad King Zero executive order away from enactment.
North Dakota
“using the term Im fixin to...
I love it. Having grown up in Western Kentucky in the 40’s and 50’s I think I understand. My grandpa was a very self reliant man who had a small farm. When he said I’m fixin to go, he meant that literally. His old T-Model Ford was only started once a week, and that was for the two mile trip to town for provisions and visiting. The tires almost always needed patches, thus they needed fixin. In order to go, something always needed fixin.
Best stay away.
Grandma is on SS and medicare. Mama is on disability. Papa is working a blue collar job with benefits.
But what really impressed me is the farming they were doing in their back yard. Many tropical fruit trees, mango's, papaya, avocado, pineapple...and vegetables. They gave me some tasty green onions.
I was also very impressed with the fishing skills of papa. He has Tampa Bay salt water within easy reach. He was fishing for relaxation and the satisfaction of free food.
Looks like Northern Maine.
I’m sticking to rural CT. We’re not too close to any interstates, and most the urban urchins will be thinking of heading south. Plenty of woods around (right next to a big state forest), and water as well. Already building up our gardening skills and like you said, we know how to hack the weather when we lose power for week or two in the dead of winter (which happens more often than you’d think). Summers are very pleasant with only maybe 5-6 days of real sweltering.
Not ideal with the population density, as I think northern NH, VT, ME or NY would be best, but oh well. My family has lived in town for over 40 years and we know a lot of people.

For the love of God, stay out of North Dakota. That is a treeless, frozen wilderness with nothing but left over lutefisk and sauge with kraut to eat and old beer soaked accordial players on the radio and in the bars. You even have Polka Mass at church. Stay away from a place that has 9 months of winter, 2 of mud and one of blistering unrepentant heat.
accordial = accordian
Better amend your plans . . . See my post # 131
