Our Founding Fathers spirit

In the spirit of our Founding Fathers let us recall the words of Israel Putnam.

"Patriot, remember the heritages received from your forefathers and predecessors. Protect and perpetuate them for future generations of your countrymen."

To those that don't know Israel Putnam,

Israel Putnam was born in Salem Village (now Danvers), Mass. to a prosperous farming family. On April 20, 1775, when Putnam received news of the Battle of Lexington that started the day before, he left his plow in the field and rode one hundred miles in eighteen hours, reaching Cambridge the next day, to offer his services to the Patriot cause.

Shortly after the Battle of Lexington, Putnam led the Connecticut militia to Boston and was named major general, making him second in rank to his Chief in the Continental Army. During that battle, the Battle of Bunker Hill, Putnam ordered his troops, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes," which has since become one of the American Revolution's more memorable quotes.

A monument to Israel Putnam in Brooklyn Conn, reads "Patriot, remember the heritages received from your forefathers and predecessors. Protect and perpetuate them for future generations of your countrymen."

In Danvers, Mass there is an Ice Cream Pantry in his name. http://www.putnampantry.com/ I remember going there many times and seeing the history on the walls.

What is so incredible is what they fought for. It wasn't over the level of taxation introduced by the Brit government.

They fought for ideas. Our forefathers refused to acknowledge Brit taxation as a legitimate power. There were lesser known, other issues as well such as suspension of trial by local jury, shutting down some colonial assemblies.
