Vanity: Flying Flag Upside Down? Ribbons? Tea Bags?
me | 2/13/09 | me

Posted on 02/13/2009 9:35:40 PM PST by Freedom56v2

I am so grieved by the travesty that occurred this evening in Washington. I am saddenned and extremely concerned for the future of our country and am looking for a way to express it.

Whatever happened to the activism of the 80s?! I remember seeing news coverage of groups of people picketing with "throw the bums out" signs, sending tea bags to Washington, the term limits and divided government concepts being debated on talking-heads shows.

Are any organizations leading the charge here? I know there are Freeps in Washington, but there has to be something we here in fly-over country can do--and I am sick of calling dem staffers who could care less about my views.

I came up with several ideas---flying flag upside down, sending tea bags to Washington, some sort of ribbon or bumper sticker campaign

--somehow conservatives need to start building momentum to mitigate this disaster. Any ideas/thots

Sometimes I think the internet has created a level of passivism—people are blogging all over the place, but Washington is not paying attention”

How true! Most people now won’t go demonstrate since that would mean turning off their computers and leaving the house.

(...or not getting to watch that movie they rented)

America rants at home now. The population is safely under control. The government can do whatever it wants.

<<<Exactly-—in the 80’s there was no internet—I do remember the news covering folks converging on Washington demonstrating, etc. Again, I just really want to DO something instead of just ranting with my fingers.

You are also right about population being safely under control with internet...is the internet the new opiate of the masses? :(

“I would also warn about flying our flag upside down as a sign of protest since that is usually done by liberals and antiwar types again mixed messages vs dual messages.”

Ooops.. I now see that you beat me to it., but worth repeating.

“Flying the flag upside down? Is that not what the Marxist hippies do? I think that’s a bad idea.”

<<Yeah they did when they thot the country was in distress, but it is not disrespectful from what I have read. I am looking for a way to demonstrating my concern/distress, please add ideas if you have them.

“I AM JOHN GALT”

Terrific idea!! I read through this entire thread and your idea takes the cake, IMHO. And that’s something from me, considering that I think Ayn Rand was a pretty mediocre writer. HOWEVER, her ideas were very sound, and John Galt is a universal figure. This is a TERRIFIC idea!! Do you have any idea where to get bumper stickers? Or maybe we can get them from cafepress.com?

Some nut, angry over my W sticker, in 2004 physically attacked my car and then stalked me in a store and verbally assaulted me.
I am not sure I woould put a bumper sticker on my car again.

Note: The LIBS are NOW THE ESTABLISHMENT...Hippies demonstrated against the Establishment... I am now leaning against upside down flag because so much conflict about it even here—however, it is a sign of distress and at least the demonstrators/hippies did something—I want to do something to show my dismay—

I educated myself to the issues, I called numerous “representatives” numerous times, I emailed, and no one cared :(

At least hippies were doing something to change things...they demonstrated against what they they did not believe in. Not saying that I agree with their sentiments, but if it is not wrong to fly flag upside down, fact that hippies did it should not be the issue IMHO.

I may be missing something obvious, but it seems to me that the Dems would love it if we didn’t participate in the census. Flyover country would lose electoral votes.

At this point I think praying is the most needed action.

Sending emails, blogging, etc., doesn’t do much good, obviously. And maybe just a few hundred people could be rounded up for a demonstration. But prayer does still work.

God is still in absolute control. He is King of kings, and Lord of lords.

That is the comfort we have as we see this world changing for the worse every day. God will eventually make all things right...and in the meantime, He does still hear the prayers of His people. He even says to pray for our enemies.

Our greatest weapon—prayer—is the least used.

“The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” I say the USA is in DIRE DISTRESS! This is the PERFECT STATEMENT!!! Much better than throwing tea in some harbor!

I have turned my flag upside down. I think that is it!!! Put upside down flag magnets on your car - everyone wear your flag pin on you lapel upside down. Get US stamps that are flags and put them upside down when you mail! Put flag stickers upside down on mail.

Who’s in - shall we start a campaign. Facebook page, facebook group, website. How do we start?”

Sorry I missed your post...lot’s of mixed emotion on this thread, but it certainly would be easy to implement with stamps, flags, pins, etc...No mistaking it. Again tho, lots of conflict even here and don’t want an issue mirred in a side-bar confict.

Have you had anyone argue with you about the appropriateness of your flag upside down?

My Dad has a childhood friend who apparently told him that he felt like a “super patriot” when Zero won the election. Dad proceeded to ream him out (via email) regarding the true meaning of patriotism. (He sent me a copy of the email, so that’s how I know.)

I’m in. I love the idea of people asking what it means and looking it up. I believe this will take off like wildfire.
