McCain cuts deal with delegates to hand WV victory to Huckabee

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee enjoys the first victory on Super Tuesday for the Republicans as he takes all 18 delegates in the state of West Virginia, winning 52% of the vote, although rumors abound regarding the McCain campaign's possible instruction to their delegates to switch to his side.

Mitt Romney finished second with 47% of the vote, followed by McCain at 1%.

Rumors are circulating that the McCain campaign instructed their delegates to defect over to Mike Huckabee's side as to avoid a Romney victory. Nationally, McCain is significantly ahead of Huckabee and can afford giving the state's 18 delegates to Huckabee, but certainly not to Romney, who was originally in the lead when polling began in West Virginia by a wide margin and trails McCain nationally by only 17 delegates.

No, McCain’s no Atwater. But he’s no fool, either.

He has held on for 8 years, built himself a reputation as an “independent thinker,” and managed to come back from political death to be the frontrunner for our nomination.

Like him or not—and I do not—he’s shown some serious political savvy.

Uhhhh....I never used the word “slimes” but your saying I did fits into the fairytale delusions of those that support Huckabee (and thus McCain) still. Please show me where Huckabee EVER challenged any of McCain’s positions that run counter to his own. Huckabee saying, “We have our differences...” doesn’t count. And signing two anti-amnesty pledges days before a primary does not reflect a candidate sticking to his record but running counter to it.

Wonder how many others McCain has made similar deals. I wonder how many think they’re going to be McCain’s VP?

"Democrat landslide in the fall? Count on it."

It seems that McCain is indeed a Manchurian Candidate.

Destroy the Republican Party and get the Liberal weasels into power now, and likely forever.

Some people may just have too much class to be a politician. Not everyone is cut out for wallowing in the mud and back stab like the political class.

I still hope he wins in the end, but if he doesn’t then we will get the government we deserve and he will be no worse the wear.

I admire a man who is so concerned about his country’s future that he is willing to spend his own money hoping to have the opportunity to make a difference. It is beginning to look like to few share my view. Enjoy your 8+ years of Obama or Clinton. We will see if we have a country left to save after they have their way.

So, we are to be impressed by underhanded dealings and lower our opinion of the man who came in with the intent to win cleanly?

Yup. Definitely Hillary’s year then.

I'll do the heavy lifting by worrying about the Islamic terrorists.

Worring, is what you call heavy lifting? What a man. Don't hurt yourself.

Your traitor McCain will amnesty every Al Queda mole in the country. Worry about that if it's not too heavy

“That means Paul will win over the long haul.”

Keep laughing. Paul has come in 2nd place in 3 of the last 4 (not including WV) states. He's looking at the bigger picture. A lot of these delegates won't get awarded until May or June, and they'll go to the candidate who's still standing. Right now, these caucus votes are just beauty pageants.

Huckabee doesn't have the grassroots and money like Paul has. But I'm glad he won today. As long as he's slowing McCain's momentum and pushes Romney further out of the race, that's a good thing.

Excuse me. I expect Republican candidates to conduct themselves with honor. How can we expect honest, decent government if we don’t have honorable, decent candidates. This travesty is destructive.

Must be nice to not be hampered by deep thinking..you worry about that 50 cents and I'll do the heavy lifting by worrying about the Islamic terrorists. McCain will kick their asses....then we can go back to your small concerns.

Yo Newbie...say hi to McCain when he hands you your check (with Soros' endorsement)

I guess I never considered ads touting an opponents own record as negative campaigning unless that opponent is ashamed of said record. That is so Clintonian, “I can say or do anything I need to win, but if you tell the people the truth about me that is negative campaigning.”

It didn’t appear that way to me. If you look at the 1st vote results versus the second it appears most of Paul’s went to Romney but ALL of mccain’s went to Huck. Right?

Paul's people extracted a promise of three delegates to give over, so it's pretty likely they moved as a block. As to Romney's total improving, probably that was voters who were on the fence to begin with and put off by the nature of the deal.

What you fail to see is that the voters in WV got the shaft today.
