Ty Cobb was one of the greatest baseball players of all time and king of the so-called Deadball Era. He played in the major leagues—mostly for the Detroit Tigers but a bit for the Philadelphia Athletics—from 1905 to 1928, and was the first player ever voted into the Hall of Fame. His lifetime batting average of .366 is amazing, and has never been equaled. But for all that, most Americans think of him first as an awful person—a racist and a low-down cheat who thought nothing of injuring his fellow players just to gain another base or score a run....

y instinct, honed reflex and general contrarianism, I root for all “flashy” “showboats” who are “disgraces to the game.” It has been this way since I left Boston at age 10 to move to North Carolina, a state with no notable baseball team save the minor-league Durham Bulls, who, at least when I was growing up, seemed more a Hollywood relic than a ball club. Freed from having to like the Red Sox, I began to root for Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics, mostly because I liked how deeply he squatted while taking a lead off first base. He...

Who is the "The Pink Hat Guy" behind home plate at Wrigley Field? And why does he keep wearing that loud hat and green sweatshirt? It's Jim Anixter ... and he just wants his wife to know he actually went to the ballgame. "It's so my wife can see I'm really at the ballpark and I'm not fooling around," said a laughing Anixter, who celebrated his 45th anniversary on Dec. 20. Justin Breen says Anixter's company spends $200,000 a year on Cubs tickets: Jim Anixter is Jim Anixter is "The Pink Hat Guy" with season tickets behind home plate at...

These two have met two times before, with Bradley getting the win in their first meeting by way of a controversial decision win. It began in the same Las Vegas venue, with Pacquiao's sensational victory as a whirlwind of a fighter in June 2001, and ended with this emphatic win over the American who inflicted one of his three grave losses in his last six fights. In the decade of the 2000s, when Pacquiao was named the BWAA "Fighter of the Decade", people traveled in droves."I'm looking for knockdowns in this fight, I did my best, but Bradley's a good counter...

An annual gun show held at a school in western Wisconsin sparked protests on Saturday. The Indianhead Rifle and Pistol Club held their day-long gun show at Spooner High School. The event is one of the group’s major fundraisers and drew in hundreds of people. Some of those people showed up in protest to voice their concerns about holding a gun show at a school. “Many people in our community do not believe this is a good idea. It’s not safe,” said Sherrie Wiegand, the protest organizer. “It’s hypocritical for vulnerable adolescent students who see that they can’t come even...

The search, off the coast near 1308 Palos Verdes Drive West, began about 8:20 p.m. Friday, when the owner of a boat the diver was using called the county fire department to report it, according to L.A. County Lifeguard Capt. Kenichi Haskett. “The boat was docked in King Harbor in Redondo Beach and he called our Hermosa Beach lifeguard station to report it being overdue,” Haskett said. “He told us he had given it to a man on Thursday, who wanted to do some diving off shore,” he said Kenichi said the county lifeguards then notified the U.S. Coast Guard...

ESPN host Bomani Jones wore a "Caucasians" t-shirt mocking the Cleveland Indians' "Chief Wahoo" logo during the "Mike & Mike" show on Thursday. The shirt includes the word "Caucasians" in the Indians' font, with a character based on "Chief Wahoo" that has white skin (instead of red), a basic nose (instead of a large, hooked nose), blonde hair (instead of dark hair parted, and held down by a head band), and a dollar sign (instead of a feather). Here are the two logos side-by-side:

Robert Windham, better known as Blackjack Mulligan, the patriarch of the Windham wrestling family that includes three performers on the current WWE roster, passed away... Windham, 73, was a major star in pro wrestling during the 70s and 80s. He was only in the business for two years, working under his real name, before he got his big break in the WWWF in 1971, taking the Blackjack Mulligan name, copying the gimmick with the black cowboy hat and black glove of Blackjack Lanza (Jack Lanza), who had become one of the top heels in the business a few years earlier......

US Army veteran Kevin McCluskey caddies for Graeme McDowell in the Par 3 event at the Masters eight years after having both legs blown off in Afghanistan and also losing all sight in his right eye. McCluskey, who is from Philadelphia and served with the 101 Airborne Division in Afghanistan, said that he had been left "speechless" by McDowell's offer. 2010 US Open champion McDowell, whose two-under-par total left him six behind winner Jimmy Walker in the Par 3 event, said that McCluskey's battles "puts life and golf in perspective". "I hit a roadside bomb. I lost both my legs....

Judging by the comments J.J. Watt made Wednesday, the Houston Texans may not have the All-Pro defensive end for as long as they envisioned. In an interview with Nick Wright and John Lopez of SportsRadio 610 (via CBS Houston's Garret Heinrich), Watt didn't say his retirement is imminent; however, he did reveal he'll only continue in the NFL "until I feel like I can't play at that highest level anymore": I can tell you right now that I am not going to be one of those guys that is going to play as long as I possibly can. I have...

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has signed a bill that bans the use of smokeless tobacco products at all ticketed baseball stadiums, sports arenas and recreation areas. De Blasio signed the bill Wednesday. He said the legislation was important to the health of baseball players and the people of New York. The City Council approved the legislation last month by a vote of 44-3. It was sponsored by Council Member Corey Johnson. …

To my amazement, it seems like all the conference raiding has worked out to the benefit of most. I love the new Big East, which made basketball the main focus of the conference. The Big Twelve seems better than ever, in both basketball AND football, AFTER having been raided. And amazingly the Big 10 and Pac 12 seem to have talked themselves into the notion that their about academic excellence, go figure. Seriously... the Big 10 sold Maryland on its library and information infrastructure! But there's one ugly mess, remaining: The American Athletic Conference (AAC), an accidental conference born of...

Every member of the Kansas City Royals is shining a little brighter now. Before Tuesday's game against the New York Mets, the Royals received their World Series reward — a ginormous ring that they excitedly showed off in front of the very team they beat last November.

It’s Masters week, so CBS decided to kick off the most glorious week of the year with a very well-done profile of two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson. Bubba is a bit of a peculiar case for golf fans. The way he plays golf is awe-inspiring and is, in many ways, unprecedented. He hits the ball so far and with so much movement that it often looks like he’s playing a different game than everybody else. But Bubba also has a nasty habit of throwing temper tantrums on the course, lashing-out at fans and his caddie in ways that have earned...

MILWAUKEE -- Buster Posey is going with multi-dimensional. For Brandon Crawford, it's depth. Joe Panik chooses balance. For Hunter Pence, it's all about the collective. "A bunch of grinders," said Denard Span. "Relentlessness, maybe?" said Matt Duffy, raising an eyebrow. And what word would Brandon Belt select to summarize the character and potential of the Giants offense this season? "Aw, honestly," Belt said. "I just can't wait to see how many runs we can put up." It was the talk of the spring: How deep, balanced and potent can this Giants offense be this season? There were more smiles in...
